Note: From last night, missed in Kight hoopla:

5-star DL explains how Alabama overtook UGA as top school with commitment approaching

Jayson Jones is the No. 2 DT in the 2020 class.
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. In this edition, we discuss the latest regarding one of Alabama’s top overall targets in the 2020 class.

Alabama now leads for 2020 5-star DL Jayson Jones

Georgia was Jayson Jones’ leader for a few months, but that is no longer the case for the 5-star defensive tackle from Calera (Ala.) High School. Alabama now leads for the state’s No. 1 prospect in the 2020 class.

After visiting for A-Day last Saturday, the Tide came out of that visit tied atop Jones’ list of favorite schools, and now they are the lone leader with a commitment coming on July 4.

“After that visit, Alabama and Georgia were both 50-50,” Jones told SEC Country. “Both are great schools. Alabama has stepped it up lately because Georgia was leading at first. Alabama is now my leader.

"Communication is very attractive to me. If you don’t communicate with me, I’m not going to be drawn to your school. And Alabama has been communicating with me a lot.”

Alabama was on the outside looking in on Jones’ recruitment at the start of the year, when the team underwent numerous coaching changes. The Tide lost defensive line coach Karl Dunbar to the Pittsburgh Steelers and defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt to Tennessee.

During that transition, communication, as one would expect, fell off. But the reason why Georgia led during that time had to do with the most important factor in his recruitment: communication.

“Every time I called the Georgia coaches, they would always pick up the phone,” Jones said. “I do understand that [Alabama] was trying to get new coaches and set up a schedule to settle them in. But the area recruiter was still there, and he wasn’t really picking up the phone until after the coaching change.”

That’s no longer the case now that the staff is in place. Jones feels like a major priority for the Tide, and he should. He’s one of the team’s top overall targets in the 2020 recruiting cycle.

“I know it’s just words, but they do tell me that I would be a big asset to their defense and they really want me. I can see it,” Jones said. “Every time I’m down there — and even though I’ve been there like five to seven times — the coaches treat me with the same respect and treat me like it’s my first time being down there.”

Jones contemplated making a decision before July 4, shortly after visiting Tuscaloosa last weekend, but he and his family decided to keep the original date to avoid confusion.

The 6-foot-6, 330-pound prospect’s finalists will be Alabama, Florida State, Georgia and Mississippi State. But even after he commits, his recruitment won’t be 100 percent over. Jones said he’ll keep his recruitment open because he wants to visit other schools.

Alabama is in excellent position to get an early commitment from Jones because of its ramped-up communication, his frequent trips to Tuscaloosa, his connection with the players, staff and the recruits who are also being recruited by the Tide.

How big of a commitment would Jones be for the Tide? The coaching staff sees him filling in for a potential first-round pick. “They see me playing a Raekwon [Davis]-type of role,” Jones said. “They see me as his replacement when he leaves. Sometimes I would be playing on the outside or the 3 or 5 technique.”

Jones and his family grew up Alabama fans, but that won’t prevent him from choosing another school. However, I don’t see that happening after speaking with Jones and other sources with knowledge of his recruitment.

I expect the nation’s No. 2 defensive tackle, who wants to major in computer science and calls himself a “computer freak,” to pick Bama on July 4.

Kevin Harris to Miami picking up steam?

Kevin Harris, a 4-star weakside defensive end from Grayson High School (Loganville, Ga.), will announce his commitment on Tuesday. His finalists are Alabama and Miami. LSU was a contender at one point, but not anymore. He canceled an official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend.

After talking with multiple people, it seems like Miami should be considered the favorite. One thing to note with Harris: He has frequently changed his mind with his recruitment. Alabama, LSU and Miami were each considered his top school at one point. Even if he chooses Alabama on Tuesday, his recruitment is by no means over.

Miami has surged for Harris after he visited last weekend for the Hurricanes’ alumni weekend, where he spent valuable time with hundreds of former Canes players. He also has a good relationship with Miami defensive line coach Jess Simpson. Grayson coach Christian Hunnicutt was Simpson’s offensive coordinator when Simpson was coach at Buford (Ga.) High School.

“The one thing they have in common is Jess is a driven coach and Kevin is a driven player, so that’s an easy match,”  Hunnicutt told DieHards. "Jess Simpson has very few peers in regards to defensive line coaching and understanding all the intricacies of defensive line play.”

[ Ever heard of Craig Kugliowski?]

Miami is recruiting Harris as a defensive end in its 4-3 defense, while Alabama is recruiting him as a Jack linebacker in its 3-4 defense. Harris is 6-foot-4 and 218 pounds, so he will have to gain a significant amount of weight if he did end up playing on the defensive line. But the Hurricanes can pitch Harris on immediate playing time. Miami failed to sign a blue-chip prospect at the position in the 2018 class, and the team could potentially lose both starters after this season.

Harris did visit Tuscaloosa last Monday after taking an official visit to Miami, but the buzz is pointing toward the Canes. If the Tide do miss on Harris, he’ll still be recruited, because, as stated above, this recruitment is by no means over.

SEC Country will have live coverage of Harris’ commitment announcement at 5:30 p.m. ET on Tuesday. Fans can watch on our Facebook, Twitter and YouTube accounts.

Note: This is a Sunday night article. BOL and Tider Insider mods, after talking with their sources Monday morning, are feeling better today about Bama's chances with Harris.

Also, Kirschner appears to call all Bama OLBs "Jack" LBs. I suspect Bama likes Harris as a Sam OLB -- until he adds some weight. Harris is listed at 6-4/218 with 4.5 speed. Bama may even like him as a versatile ILB/OLB.

Marcel Brooks commits to LSU

Marcel Brooks, a 4-star linebacker from Marcus High School (Flower Mound, Texas), committed to LSU over Alabama on Sunday after taking an official visit to Baton Rouge this weekend. This really isn’t surprising. Brooks, listed as the nation’s No. 5 outside linebacker, has been recruited by the Tide as an inside linebacker.

As stated several times, the main inside linebacker targets for the Tide are 5-star prospect Nakobe Dean, 4-star prospect Christian Harris and junior college prospect Lakia Henry. Alabama is in good shape with each.

Outside of those three, the Tide are also keeping their eyes on Kane Patterson, Vonta Bentley and Kalen DeLoach.

Mohamoud Diabate is being recruited as an inside and outside linebacker and does have a committable offer, too.

Alabama also has a commitment from 4-star inside linebacker Shane Lee.

Has anyone heard anything about Turnage foot injury recovery ? I seem to recall some teams had cooled on him because it was a concerning injury.

I'm assuming Brandon Turnage's foot is fine now, since he is competing on his HS track team.

Looks like two of the guys who predicted Miami yesterday flipped to Bama. Is that correct?

From two of the four guys who had recently CBd him to Miami. One of them is a Miami mod.

ETA: Yes, that is correct, Carlton.

As they say, recruiting is fluid. If Harris commits tomorrow, I hope we hold on to his commitment. Those fights all the way to NSD commits are tough on the nerves.

Someone that I pay a lot of attention to said today to not count on Harris one way or another until he actually signs. Bobby Brown-like.

Yeah, I'm also hearing Harris is prone to being swayed to change his mind. And he's shown that some so far. I sense that Saban and Tosh have gotten Kevin and his dad to realize that Bama is the best choice for him.

So, I'm cautiously optimistic Harris' commitment can be strengthened over time, despite pursuit by others. Bama should have him visit as often as he can swing it this summer and fall. It's a pretty quick drive for him.

ETA: King Mwikuta will keep after him too.
