Steve Wiltfong CB'd Darnell Wright to Tennessee.

At first he said he it'll be a long UT vs UA battle. Then he said he might switch his CB to Bama by Sunday.

Take Two: Who'll land rare five-star center Clay Webb?

quote:

THE STORYLINE

Dating back to the start of Rivals.com in 2002, there have only been two five-star centers. One of them is Oxford, Ala., standout Clay Webb this recruiting cycle. The other was USC signee Jeff Byers in the 2004 recruiting class.

Webb, a 6-foot-4, 285-pound standout, won the offensive line MVP award at the Rivals 3 Stripe Camp presented by adidas over the weekend. It was another dominant performance for one of the best interior linemen we’ve seen at the high school level in a long time.

So where will Webb go to school? There is a strong feeling that Alabama is going to be incredibly tough to beat. Big surprise there. The Crimson Tide develop linemen better than most schools, he has friends committed in this recruiting class and Alabama has always been high on Webb’s list. Auburn, Georgia and Tennessee are also contenders.

Alabama center Ryan Kelly was a first-round draft pick in 2016 - the 18th overall pick - by the Indianapolis Colts - so that might play a factor in Webb’s thinking as well.

Since 2010, four centers - Kelly, Wisconsin’s Travis Frederick and Florida’s Mike Pouncey and Maurkice Pouncey - have been first-round selections, and you can be sure Alabama will do its best to land what could be the fifth in a few years.

FIRST TAKE: ANDREW BONE, BAMAINSIDER.COM

“Webb is just a straight-up animal in the trenches. He is a soft-spoken, quiet kid off-the-field. When he puts on his pads and helmet it’s a completely different story. He plays with high intensity on every rep. He is normally the toughest and strongest player on the field. He is a state champion wrestler, which has helped him tremendously from an athletic standpoint. He doesn’t carry any bad weight. He is learning a new position, as he is transitioning from tackle to center. He should not have any issue.

"He has been one of Alabama’s top overall targets in the 2019 class for more than two years. He considers Alabama offensive line coach Brent Key like “an uncle.” He also has close friendships with Alabama commitments Pierce Quick and Paul Tyson. There is high confidence he ends up at Alabama, but he still wants to enjoy the recruiting process and take visits before making a decision.”

SECOND TAKE: MIKE FARRELL, RIVALS.COM

“Alabama seems to be where Webb is leaning as he has a great relationship with the staff and he’s been interested in the program forever so I’ll say the Tide are the team to beat.

“He is a pure center - which is one of the reasons why Webb is so special: Because we’ve seen him snap, we’ve seen him protect inside, he’s just really rare for a guy who’s done it on the field, who can do it against the elite in the country and really has no problem. Plus, he dropped some pounds, he’s quicker than he was before, so he’s continually improving on his ability to block."

How Shane Lee’s commitment affects inside linebacker board for Alabama

Nakobe Dean is one of Alabama's top inside linebacker targets in the 2019 class.
quote:

Alabama finished seventh in the 2018 class recruiting rankings, but expect the Crimson Tide to be back on top in 2019. SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner will answer the Recruiting Question of the Day each weekday. You can ask him your questions on  Twitter or on  Facebook. Find our previous questions and answers  here.

Where does Alabama turn to now at inside linebacker?

I didn’t see the commitment of  Shane Lee, a 4-star inside linebacker from St. Frances Academy (Baltimore), coming on Tuesday night. I knew Lee had visited Tuscaloosa from Thursday through Sunday last week, but I didn’t realize he would commit to Alabama so soon.

I knew Lee was a top target for the Tide at inside linebacker, but I thought 5-star prospect  Nakobe Dean, 4-star prospect  Christian Harris and junior college prospect  Lakia Henry were going to be the only ILBs the Tide signed this cycle. But now Lee is on board and Dean, Harris and Henry still remain top targets for Alabama.

I think Lee's commitment affects 4-star prospect  Vonta Bentley the most out of the group. Bentley is an in-state prospect from Jackson-Olin High School who has Alabama as his No. 2 school behind Clemson. Alabama may have to miss on one or two out of the group of Dean, Harris and Henry now.

Note: The author is indirectly saying he thinks Bentley is lower on Bama's board than Dean, Harris and Henry.

I caught up with Nakobe Dean a few weeks ago, and it definitely seemed like Alabama was one of his top 2 or 3 choices. “I do feel like when I go there that I am a top priority,” Dean said of Alabama. “They treat me like one. Every time they text and call me, they always tell me that they want and need me. Coach [Nick] Saban himself has told me how much he needs me. He said if he could take me this year [2018 class], he would.”

I also caught up with Christian Harris last week. It was clear to me that Alabama is his leader, and the reason why he didn’t go so far to say it outwardly was because he wants to keep some intrigue in his recruitment. Check out this quote when I asked if Alabama was his leader.

“I have … I have like … I wouldn’t say I have a leader because I do want to visit at least one or two more big-time schools, but Alabama is definitely up there at the top of my list,” Harris said. Those pauses between where Harris says “I have” and “I have like” were 4 seconds and 7 seconds long, respectively. It was clear that he didn’t want to say the wrong thing or tip his hand one way or the other.

With Lakia Henry, he can’t take any visits until his junior college semester ends next month. I expect him in Tuscaloosa shortly after his semester ends. He has said that he wants to commit to a program before his season at Dodge City Community College ends. My pick goes to Alabama.

Getting inside linebackers in the 2019 class is of the utmost importance.

Alabama whiffed at inside linebacker recruiting in the 2018 class. The Tide wanted JJ Peterson, but once Jeremy Pruitt left for Tennessee, that was a done deal. They liked Vernon Jackson too, but it became apparent that he wasn’t going to sign with Alabama, so they stopped recruiting him.

The staff also liked Brandon Kaho, but he surprisingly signed with Washington. Alabama did sign 2018 3-star inside linebacker Jaylen Moody, who surely was a backup plan for the team. He got offered in the final days leading up to National Signing Day. He’ll likely redshirt this season.

Dylan Moses and Mack Wilson are likely the starters heading into this season. Moses showed that he’s bound for stardom while Wilson has shown that he’s likely the next Tide linebacker who’s going to get selected early in the NFL draft. It wouldn’t be a surprise to see him leave after this season. Outside of Moses and Wilson, there are lots of unknowns. Ben Davis hasn’t developed the way we thought he would coming out of high school and Markail Benton hasn’t played yet.

The good news is that this class is already on the right path with Lee on board and Dean, Harris and Henry looking like early Tide leans.

Notes: Bama's in good shape with Dean & Harris.

Alabama commit still exploring options elsewhere; early look at A-Day visitors

Brendan Gant committed to Alabama under former defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley.
quote:

Welcome to SEC Country’s daily Roll Tide-ings, a rundown of everything happening in Alabama Crimson Tide recruiting with Chris Kirschner. It’s Wednesday, and we talk the latest with an Alabama commit still exploring his options and an early look at visitors in town this weekend.

Brendan Gant‘s recruitment is still open

Brendan Gant committed to Alabama in December. Since then, there have been significant changes on the coaching staff, with former defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley leaving for the Oakland Raiders, Jeremy Pruitt becoming Tennessee’s coach, Tosh Lupoi getting promoted to defensive coordinator and Karl Scott being the new defensive backs coach for the Tide.

Gant, a 4-star safety from Kathleen High School (Lakeland, Fla.), has remained committed to the Tide but has taken visits elsewhere. Florida hosted him last weekend for its spring game. Miami has gotten him on campus. He also visited Georgia when he was in the area for a 7-on-7 tournament.

The nation’s No. 6 safety told SEC Country that he’s still solid with the Tide, despite his visits elsewhere. “I’m staying firm with it, but I’m still getting around more and exploring my options,” Gant said of his commitment status. “I have a couple schools I’m still into like Florida, Florida State, Ohio State, Miami and Georgia. Really anyone who just comes at me hard.

“I just want to see how they compare with things like education, would I be able to live there and help my career with football and school. … I’m not really sure [about a final decision]. There’s not really a specific date. Just whenever I feel like it’s complete and I’m ready.”

Gant said he will be in Tuscaloosa for A-Day and is planning to visit Florida State on Sunday. It wouldn’t surprise me to see Gant reopen his recruitment. I believe he’s going to end up attending one of the in-state Florida schools.

It won't surprise me if Gant signs with Bama.
