BREAKING: Alabama lands 4-star CB Christian Williams (BamaOnLine)
quote:
After signing the nation’s top defensive backs class in 2018, Alabama picked up right where it left off adding one of the nation’s top cornerbacks to its 2019 class on Monday afternoon.
Four-star Daphne (Ala.) product Christian Williams announced his commitment to the Crimson Tide over Auburn, LSU, and Tennessee among others. The 6-foot-1, 177-pounder has seen his recruitment take off in recent months, but decided to go ahead and make his decision and commit to his childhood favorite.
"They have a really high chance of getting me," Williams told BamaOnline back in February. “I have always been an Alabama fan, so I’ve always leaned towards them a little bit I guess. I love (Alabama’s) standard to win. They motivate you to be better and make yourself better every single day.”
Williams is recruited by running backs coach Joe Pannunzio, who also landed five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr. and four-star cornerback Josh Jobe in the 2018 cycle. It's not clear if the four-star corner has spoken with head coach Nick Saban as of Monday afternoon regarding his commitment.
The in-state defensive back is rated the No. 10 cornerback and the No. 101 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite. At the time of his decision, Williams was trending to the Tide at 100 percent on the Crystal Ball.
Williams is commitment No. 7 of the cycle for the Crimson Tide, which vaults the program to the No. 6 class in the country per the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings.
The in-state standout is the third defensive back in the class joining four-star safety Brendan Gant and four-star athlete Brandon Turnage. He's also the third recruit within the state to commit joining five-star offensive tackle Pierce Quick and four-star quarterback Paul Tyson.
With a loaded group of in-state prospects in 2019, expect the Tide to continue its fervent pursuit of guys like five-star center Clay Webb, four-star offensive tackle Amari Kight, four-star quarterback Taulia Tagovailoa, and three-star defensive tackle DJ Dale to name a few.
Alabama will continues on its hunt for talented defensive backs with guys like four-star safeties Daxton Hill, Jaylen McCollough, and Noa Pola-Gates (recruited as a cornerback), as well as four-star corners Sheridan Jones and Jeffery Carter still available -- just to name a few.
Williams follows in the footsteps of two Alabama greats to come out of Daphne High School in former All-American running back T.J. Yeldon and star linebacker Ryan Anderson.
Stay tuned to BamaOnLine for more on this breaking story.

We need that kicker from Hoover too, don't we?

Remaining in-state Tide targets are Taulia, Clay Webb, Amari Kight, DJ Dale, Vonta Bentley, Mohamoud Diabate and Will Reichard. Bama doesn't seem to be pushing real hard for Dale, Bentley and Diabate just yet. Also, AU commit George Pickens (WR) is visiting for A-Day and might get an offer.

Throw Diabete in the mix as well or are we holding off for the higher ranked outside LBs?

Good catch. I forgot him. Yeah, It appears there are guys ahead of Dale, Bentley and Diabate on Bama's board. I'm not certain of that tho.

Breaking down Alabama’s chances of flipping big Auburn WR commit
George Pickens is one of the top 2019 class WRs.

How good of a chance will Alabama have to flip George Pickens? - @laquon1
Alabama still hasn’t offered George Pickens, a 4-star wide receiver from Hoover (Ala.) High School. That’s pretty surprising to me because I know the Crimson Tide would like to have a big-bodied receiver in the 2019 class after missing on Justyn Ross to Clemson in the 2018 class. Pickens is 6-foot-5 and weighs 199 pounds.
At the Atlanta Opening regional camp last month, Pickens arguably was one of the top three receivers in attendance. He consistently beat whichever defensive back was in front of him and caught pretty much every ball in his vicinity.

The only reason I can come up with for why Alabama hasn’t offered yet is because he isn’t the fastest receiver out there. He ran a 4.74-second 40-yard dash, but, again, he was consistently creating separation against some of the top defensive backs in the South.
Pickens is expected to be in Tuscaloosa this weekend for A-Day. It wouldn’t surprise me to see him get an offer when he’s on campus. Remember, 4-star running back Asa Martin, who also is from the state of Alabama and was one of the top 2018 running backs in the country, didn’t add an offer from Bama until A-Day last cycle. Martin ended up being a top target for the Tide, but he signed with Auburn.
Alabama clearly will be late in the game for Pickens — if it offers — as he’s been committed to Auburn for almost a year. The good news is that Pickens’ recruitment isn’t shut down. He wants to visit other schools such as Georgia, LSU, Florida, Florida State and Michigan.
But the relationships he has at Auburn are going to be tough for Alabama to overcome. He’s very close with Auburn wide receivers coach Kodi Burns. Gus Malzahn and Chip Lindsey both coached his brother, Chris Humes, at Arkansas State and at the high school level. Plus, you have to mention the relationship Pickens has with Tigers quarterback commit Bo Nix. They play on the same 7-on-7 team, so those two are only going to get closer this summer.
I would say the Tide’s chances of flipping Pickens should be classified as a long shot at best.

4.7...hmm. He makes it look good on those highlights.

I saw him play and he's good. I thought he was faster than 4.7. I guarantee that's why Bama isn't bothering with him.

It was cold and windy at that Atlanta camp. George Pickens wasn't the only guy who had an unexpectedly slow 40-time there. He might normally run faster times than 4.74.
Tyrell Shavers is our only real tall WR, but we're loaded at TE. Kedrick James is 6-6/270, runs a 4.7 40-yd and is a very good route runner with very good hands. He's reportedly having a really good spring and he'll only be a soph this fall.

I seriously doubt that's the reason. He will end up getting a offer and be the same speed that he was.

About time the state of AL had a loaded class. Looking forward to cleaning up in-state and then poaching elite talent from other states to fill out what will be the #1 or #2 class this year!
