Nation's #1 OT says Alabama 'has the whole package' (BamaOnLine-VIP)

5* OL Devontae Dobbs 6-4/270 (MI) hudl

Dobbs made his third visit to Bama Tuesday, along with his coach and group of teammates. Dobbs knows he's a top priority for Bama. He's seriously considering the Tide, but taking his time in his recruitment.

ETA: One of the "insiders" (very good history) said Sopsher & Lee = "done deal" back in Feb.

Look: Alabama's entire 2019 class so far (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama added commitments #5 and #6 on Thursday from four-star defensive tackle Rashad Cheney and four-star quarterback Paul Tyson, respectively. The pair of pledges were the first for the Tide's 2019 class this calendar year.

The Tide now sits with the #7-ranked class, per the 247Sports Composite Team Rankings, as the spring starts to heat up. Here, BamaOnLine takes a look at the Tide's 2019 class and the latest with each commitment.

Pierce Quick, 5-star OT, Trussville, AL

Quick has served as the foundation of the Tide's 2019 class since he joined the fold last April. Recently, the five-star tackle shut down his recruitment, in terms of taking visits elsewhere, to focus on helping Alabama build the best class it can. Quick has already succeeded in that mission helping land Tyson on Thursday.

King Mwikuta, 4-star OLB, Lagrange, GA

Mwikuta is another big piece to the class both as a player and recruiter. The four-star Jack linebacker had his mind made up on Bama since last summer despite committing in December on his birthday. Mwikuta is very firm in his commitment.

Brandon Turnage, 4-star Ath, Oxford, MS

Turnage likely projects as a safety at Alabama, but has tremendous athletic ability able to contribute in a number of ways. The four-star athlete hasn't shut down his recruitment in that he continues to take visits elsewhere, not to mention he lives in Ole Miss' backyard. Turnage, however, has maintained he's firm with his commitment to the Tide.

Brendan Gant, 4-star S, Lakeland, FL

Gant, like Turnage, still continues to take visits to other programs. This weekend he'll be out in California at USC. The four-star safety committed to the Tide while Derrick Ansley was still on the staff -- Mike Locksley is his primary recruiter -- and maintains that he feels good about his commitment but that it's been "kind of different" since. Alabama hired new defensive backs coach Karl Scott, and of course still has Locksley. A visit to Tuscaloosa this spring could clear up any questions Gant may have.

Paul Tyson, 4-star QB, Trussville, AL

Not many thought four-star quarterback Paul Tyson, the great-grandson of Paul "Bear" Bryant, would end up elsewhere. But the in-state signal caller did his due diligence, took visits, and made the decision that best fit him, which happened to be Alabama. He, like his teammate Quick, will work to help build a top-ranked class for the Tide.

Rashad Cheney, 4-star DT, Ellenwood, GA

Alabama has a major need on the defensive line with Cheney filling the first spot on Thursday. The one-time Georgia commit says his recruitment is shut down and no longer plans to take visits, instead focusing on his senior year and getting ready for the next level.

Why Georgia stopped recruiting new Alabama defensive line commit

Rashad Cheney committed to Bama on Thursday.

Rashad Cheney Jr. committed to Alabama on Thursday. He originally committed to Georgia in February 2017 before reopening his recruitment in January. UGA was Cheney’s dream school growing up, but what caused him to de-commit? Well, the Bulldogs stopped recruiting him.

That was evident by what he told SEC Country on Thursday and backed up by our Georgia recruiting reporter, Jeff Sentell. Cheney said the UGA coaching staff never stayed in touch after he de-committed from the Bulldogs.

“I have like 20 other places I could go to,” Cheney said about Georgia halting its recruitment of him. “I know it’s a business. Just because one school isn’t hitting you up doesn’t mean you should get down on yourself, even if it was the school you were committed to.”

Georgia has a commitment from 6-ft-6, 270-lb defensive lineman Bill Norton. The Bulldogs also are in the mix for Travon Walker, Josh Harris, Jaelin Humphries, Derek Green and Derrick Hunter. The common theme with all of those players is that they're all bigger than Cheney, who is 6-ft-3 and 270 lbs.

Even with Georgia deciding to pass on Cheney, Alabama had him as one of its top targets on the defensive line and now has him locked in. Cheney has shut down his recruitment.

Rashad Cheney backs away from Georgia commitment (Jan 25, 2018)

quote:

February 18, 2017 was a very happy day for Rashad Cheney and his family because he committed to his dream school, the Georgia Bulldogs.

Since then, a lot of new schools have entered the race. He's added numerous offers, built many relationships with coaches and had a lot of time to think about his future. As sure as he was Athens was for him 11 months ago, he now has decided he needs more time think things over.

"I have decided to de-commit from Georgia," said Cheney. "Georgia is a great school, they have great coaches and there is nothing bad I can say about Georgia, but this is a life decision for me and I just need to make sure I make the right decision."

The 6-foot-3, 263 pound defensive end out of Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove visited Auburn last weekend and schools like Penn State and Tennessee are coming hard after him, but that really had nothing to do with his decision.

He just wants to clear his mind and make the best decision for his future. "I have been thinking about this for a while. When I committed, I was just so happy because I had the offer, but I did not really think everything through.

"Georgia is where I am from, it is the school I grew up cheering for and I just did not think about how important the decision was before I committed.

"At the end of the day, this is a business decision for my future. I have to make sure I go to the right school for me. Maybe it is Georgia if they still recruit me, but I just need to look around and make sure of things."

Cheney has no favorites and his recruitment is completely open to all schools at this time. He is going to now take visits as an uncommitted prospect and evaluate all of his options thoroughly.

I was in New Orleans last week passing out money to anyone that wasn’t passed out and looked like they could play.

Long live Jimmy: New Alabama commit Rashad Cheney Jr. plays in honor of best friend

Rashad Cheney will be bringing memories of his best friend with him to Alabama.
quote:

Rashad Cheney committed to Alabama on Thursday. He released a note on Twitter thanking his faith, family, coaches and trainers for helping him get to where he is now — one of the best high school football players in the country.

At the end of the note, he signed off with the hashtag #LongLiveJimmy. Jimmy had to be included in one of the most important days of Cheney’s life because he was always there for him until Nov. 6, 2016. That was one of the worst days of Cheney’s life.

Cheney said he was sleeping. “I woke up and had so many missed calls from my mom and everybody,” Cheney started. “When I woke up and got the call that he passed, I threw my phone and just cried. I probably cried for two weeks straight. I couldn’t believe that my best friend was gone. I took it hard.”

James “Jimmy” Dew was 17 years old when he accidentally shot himself in the stomach. The days of them hanging out after school, playing basketball and cracking jokes would be no more.

“I’m telling you, if you saw him, I was there with him,” Cheney said. “He was my best friend. I shouldn’t say friend. That was my brother. That’s how close we were.”

Their relationship didn’t start off on the best note, however. Cheney and Dew met in fifth grade, and, well, they screamed at each other. That was their introduction. The future best friends were playing football and started exchanging words.

“You know how that goes,” Cheney laughed. “When you’re young, you think you’re always right and you argue about everything. After that, we were cool with each other and became brothers.”

Cheney and Dew were teammates at Brown Middle School (Atlanta). That’s when their relationship took off. Both of them loved football, but Dew didn’t play in high school. Instead, he would be in the stands cheering for his best friend when Cheney played at Booker T. Washington before transferring to Cedar Grove for his junior season.

Two days after Cheney’s final game at Booker T. Washington, a 14-0 loss at Therrell, Dew was gone. Though Dew can’t physically watch his best friend live out his dreams, Cheney said he feels like spiritually he’s there. “Everything I do, I feel like he’s pushing me,” Cheney said. “I always think of him. He’s my motivation on the field.”

In the week after Dew’s death, Cheney had dog tags made that had his friend’s name on it. The tags would serve as a reminder of all the good times they had together. Earlier this year, Cheney got a tattoo that covers the majority of his arm.

Alabama commit Rashad Cheney got this tattoo to commemorate his best friend, James “Jimmy” Dew, who lost his life on Nov. 6, 2016.

When he takes the field for Alabama next year, all Cheney will have to do is look down at his arm and smile knowing that Jimmy, his brother, will always be there with him forever.

“I know the first thing he would say was, ‘I better have tickets to every game,'” Cheney laughed. “I know he would be proud of me. He would always tell me that I was going to make it one day. And we are one step closer.”

Yeah. His first full class with Jones and Ingram who are among the nicest, most philanthropic players in the NFL currently. Really a character stretch on the big names in that class.
