Cheney's done with recruiting, commits to Alabama

quote:

Rashad Cheney was scheduled to take official visit No. 1 to Penn State in two weeks, but that visit to Happy Valley is no longer going to take place.

The only place the four-star defensive lineman out of Ellenwood (Ga.) Cedar Grove plans to visit from here on out is Tuscaloosa.

"I have committed to Alabama and I am not going to visit any other schools," said Cheney. "I am done with recruiting. I have made my decision and I am going to Alabama."

Not only is this a special day to Cheney, but for his entire family for multiple reasons. The commitment is one, but the day he chose to do it on is a special one too — it's his mother's birthday.

He did this for her.

"I am one of the few in my family to go to college, so to be able to commit on my mom's birthday is something special. She is very happy for me. She is very happy about my decision and this is for her."

Nick Saban is happy too.

A visit to see Saban and his staff last weekend changed everything.

"I knew I would like Alabama, but my visit there last week was a lot better than I expected it be. It was not my plan to go there and like it as much as I did, but I loved it.

"I got to see a lot of Alabama and it is all great. I talked with coach Saban for about 35-40 minutes at the end of the visit and it was great.

"He talked to me about how he liked me as a player and that meant a lot coming from him, one of the best coaches in the country. He does not care about my size, but he thinks I am a great player that can play and move.

"That stood out a lot to me."

Cheney's mind was made up that day, but he wanted to wait until April 5, his mother's birthday, to make it official.

"I am done," said Cheney. "It feels great to be committed to Alabama. It means a lot that coach Saban gave me a committable offer and I will make sure it pays off for him.

"That weight room is going to be my best friend and I know the coaches are going to push me, so I can't wait to get there.

"I trust Saban, his staff and everyone thereto develop me and make me the best I can be. They will turn me into a man on and off the field. I am excited."

The new 'Bama commit is getting to know new defensive line coach Craig Kuligowski and they think highly of each other. Cheney has been in regular contact with Kuligowski in recent weeks and defensive lineman thinks he can be turned into a "beast" by the new coach.

Cheney plans to be in T-Town for the Alabama spring game and he will arrive there as a commitment.

LSU keeping close tabs on in-state CB Chester Kimbrough

quote:

LSU keeping tabs on 4-star CB Chester Kimbrough

Chester Kimbrough is still awaiting an offer from a certain school right up Interstate 10.

That offer could come as early as this spring, should the 4-star cornerback make the trip to Baton Rouge to check in with LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond, who has shown increased interest in the 6-foot, 170-pound New Orleans product in recent weeks. It could come in June, if Kimbrough elects to return to campus for the elite high school prospect camp, a challenge he rarely shies away from.

Of course, LSU has been recruiting the top-300 prospect quietly behind the scenes in hopes of luring Kimbrough on campus soon. The Tigers have their work cut out after Alabama, Texas, Michigan, Florida and Mississippi State all offered him early this spring, but that in no way means that any doors are closed.

“I’m still open to anyone,” Kimbrough told SEC Country. “Any offer is a blessing, and I look forward to it.”

Raymond has been an integral figure in Kimbrough’s recruitment, despite the cornerback not yet holding an offer. LSU’s secondary coach hosted him for a 1-on-1 meeting in March after the team’s first spring practice. He’s working feverishly to develop a closer bond with the in-state prospect, but he also wants him to make more visits to campus and perhaps display his abilities in a camp setting as most Louisiana prospects do.

Kimbrough remains open to that possibility and maintains a high opinion of Raymond as he delves into the thick of his recruitment this spring.

“I got a text from Coach Corey not too long ago. They just want to see me and want to talk with me,” Kimbrough explained. “They just want to talk about things more the next time I’m up there and talk a lot more face-to-face.”

Kimbrough has punched his ticket to Nike’s The Opening Finals near Dallas later this summer. There’s a strong chance that he could have an offer from LSU in hand by the time he heads to Texas.

Kimbrough is set to visit Alabama this weekend. He heads to Florida next weekend. LSU is hopeful Kimbrough will make his way back to Baton Rouge for one of several camps in June.

Of course, the Tigers have a special place in the New Orleans native’s heart. An offer sooner rather than later would go a long way in making up ground on current favorites such as Florida, Mississippi State, Alabama, Georgia and Kansas.

“LSU, their defense is still thin in the secondary,” Kimbrough said. “Coach Corey is good people and I get along with him well, but LSU, they have work to do.”

5 prospects ranked inside top 50 most likely to commit to Auburn

quote:

Five top-50 prospects Auburn has best chance to land

Auburn is generating some 5-star buzz.

The Tigers only have two commitments in the 2019 class so far — though both are highly ranked — but they’ve used several midweek visits the last couple of weeks to get in contention for more guys higher up the recruiting boards. The Grayson (Ga.) tandem and the mother of a priority running back target top that list.

Auburn landed one top-50 prospect a year ago from No. 49 overall recruit Joey Gatewood. The Tigers are in the top 2 or 3 schools for several top-50 recruits this cycle.

Here are the five Auburn is most likely to add and where the Tigers stand. This list doesn’t include wide receiver Jadon Haselwood, wide receiver Frank Ladson, tackle Devontae Dobbs, linebacker De’Gabriel Floyd, athlete Mark Antony-Richards, cornerback Andrew Booth and defensive lineman Nathan Pickering. It could include them, but it doesn’t.

That tells you how favorably Auburn sits with the five below.

I'll post the relevant ones.

quote:

OL Clay Webb, No. 11 overall

Here’s another one that public perception will tell you has already made up his mind.

Alabama has been the favorite since Clay Webb came onto the season.

It makes sense why. He’s the top-ranked prospect in Alabama, and the Crimson Tide have had a lot of historical success landing a commitment from those. He’s close friends with Alabama offensive line commit Pierce Quick, and the two have expressed interest in playing together. And most of all, Webb grew up a Crimson Tide supporter, which has to have some effect on a college decision.

It’s interesting to note Webb’s willingness to wait out his decision.

Webb wants to be patient with his choice, perhaps until December after his senior season. That timeline would indicate the 5-star offensive lineman isn’t anywhere close to set on his college destination. He wants to take several visits to LSU, Tennessee and Georgia, as well as the in-state schools before committing.

Of that group, Auburn is by far the most likely to pick Webb away from Alabama. His relationships with quarterback commit Bo Nix and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey will go a long way to winning that in-state recruiting battle.

quote:

LB Nakobe Dean, No. 24 overall

Nakobe Dean called Auburn the school that most surprised him during his spring visit tour.

The 5-star linebacker from Mississippi was the first of the Mississippi contingent to visit the Plains this spring. That visit set off a domino effect that included Pickering, Brandon Turnage, Jaren Handy, Charles Moore and several others. Dean hasn’t returned since, but that’s soon to change.

He planned to visit two weekends ago on his way to the Atlanta Opening regional. Dean had to adjust his plans. He’s trying to make it to the Plains for the spring game this weekend, but if not, he expects to be back before the month ends.

Auburn is one of many schools competing for Dean. Many see Alabama as the most likely to grab Dean’s commitment. But the Tigers have been in this since the beginning, and they aren’t going anywhere.

There was a thread on the LSU RB and it was saying that Sopsher was a Bama lock. Apparently someone on BOL that is pretty much always spot on.

The guy who started the thread called the Patrick Surtain recruitment extremely early last year.

He was joined by two of our other "insiders" later in the thread and another guy posted this morning that Sopsher wears Alabama gear to school on an almost daily basis.

Sonny Shipp on Christian Harris:

quote:

When I talked to his dad last week, I didn't get the feeling he was going to be doing it as soon as this weekend.

I do think Bama leads, though, and a big reason is the family traveled to go watch Christian's brother at Wake Forest and the staying close to home angle is not as big of a deal just to be close to his parents. I also think he knows defense is his ticket to the next level and beyond, and Bama hammered that home early while LSU first went for the offense angle.

On top of that, his brother is working in Seattle after getting out of football and a couple of years with Seattle's practice squad, so another dynamic where getting away is not a big deal at all.

I've been perusing the LSU 247 board after the news of Sopsher dropped last night. Here are a few of the posts I found interesting.

quote:

Man we're not getting him. Here are the facts. Fact: Bama actually needs DL this year. Fact: Lee is already a silent to them and has been working Ish hard. Fact: They have a national championship winning coach, we have a place holder.
One of their big insiders is already saying this has been done since February.
I'm sure we'll get a bunch of fluff peices and other "sources" that are saying all the right things but it's all bull. These kids will lie and Saban will direct them to lie, just like the upstanding Surtains lied to their dear friend Corey.

I get it, and I know it's a hard sell. But, Saban did not win his first year as a matter of fact is first season was poor. But when he got the players, then things turned.

He first started with taking questionable character kids who would not be touched by most respectable schools and great players who would not qualify and mysteriously get the qualified. Then when he started winning players took noticed and here we are.

If they're dropping money like this in our own state, I'm not going to get on a high horse and be pissed about the rec's donations.

I'm pissed because LSU isn't doing the same thing to the same extent. LSU has done it before, most notably with PP and LF, but to lose a guy like this so early in the process is disheartening. Time to nut up.
