1. Here's what I saw from the sidelines

Day three is in the books and here are my thoughts from the day:

• Miami signee Jeremiah Payton has been steady throughout the practices and was good again today. He isn’t flashy by any means but he’s a solid route runner, has reliable hands and always seems to make the play. He’s going to be a very reliable guy for Miami and I can see him moving the chains often.

• I liked what I saw from Texas signee Kenyatta Watson today as he was physical and sticky in coverage most of the day. He got his head around quickly and played the ball well.

• Michigan fans should be happy for the most part with their crop of kids down here. Defensive tackle Mazi Smith, offensive tackle Trente Jones and Quinten Johnson have all had good weeks and offensive lineman Nolan Rumler was better today than he was the first two days.

• The Penn State running back duo of Devyn Ford and Noah Cain haven’t been able to show much this week and it will be interesting to see if they are a big part of the offense when the game comes around. It’s hard to judge running backs in practice, but it looks like Ford will be the one who will be more effective in the passing game and Cain is the guy who can wear down defenses.

• Nathan Pickering had a very good day on day three and it’s easy to see why Alabama is trying so hard to pull him away from Mississippi State. If State can hold onto Pickering and Charles Moore and add DeMonte Russell, who is also here and has impressed at times, it will have a great defensive line of the future.

• I’ve always questioned Keon Zipperer’s speed but he has had a pretty solid week. The Florida signee could be very good at the next level if he’s used right as a flex tight end who can work the middle of the field.

2. Ten guys having a Happy New Year

Here are 10 guys I think have raised their stock so far (these are just my opinions and don’t reflect that of the entire analyst team):

• WR Jameson Williams – Ohio State is getting a good one here. He may be skinny but he can cut, is very sudden and has excellent hands. Once he fills out, watch out.

• DT Mazi Smith – Smith has shown consistent power and plays with excellent leverage. He’s going to play early at Michigan.

• S Lewis Cine – Cine has been excellent all three days and has the length and instincts to be a very good safety prospect after he fills out.

• OT Trente Jones – Jones needs to fill out, but he has a great frame, excellent feet and he uses his hands well. He could be a star down the line if he fills out and continues to develop and he’s been one of the bigger surprises of the week.

• WR Jeremiah Payton – Payton has been steady all week and could be a weapon for Miami. He won’t wow you with his speed but he’ll catch pretty much anything in the area.

• WR Dylan Wright – Wright has good size and fights for the football and Texas A&M will be very happy with his early impact.

• S Jordan Battle – Battle has excellent size and he reads the play very well. He’ll be an instant fit in Alabama’s defense and has been excellent all week.

• DE Charles Moore – I love the way Moore works off contact and how slippery he is. His balance is excellent and he should be an SEC star down the line if he continues to develop.

• DE Nathan Pickering – Pickering is unstoppable when he tries so he just needs to work on his motor a bit more but once he does watch out.

• DB Quinten Johnson – Johnson isn’t the biggest defensive back but he plays bigger receivers well and always seems to have a feel for when the ball is coming.

All-American Bowl: Stock report from day one (Rivals)

SAN ANTONIO – The first practices for the 2019 All-American Bowl were held inside of the Alamodome on New Year’s Day. Several prospects made strong first impressions on Day 1, while others will be looking to pick up their play as the week goes on.

Antonio Alfano

A brand new five-star in the most recent update of the Rivals100, Alfano wasted no time on the first day of All-American Bowl practices showing why he was deserving of that bump. A powerfully-built defensive tackle who looks best suited for the three-technique spot, Alfano lived in the offensive backfield during Tuesday’s practice. The offensive line just had no answer for the Alabama commit’s combination of power and quickness.

Trey Sanders

As the highest-ranked 2019 prospect participating in the All-American Bowl (No. 1 Derek Stingley Jr. is on the roster, but not expected to play), Sanders was expected to show out. However, we have watched enough of these all-star games to know it is not always easy to live up to expectations when that spotlight is on you in a talent-rich environment like the All-American Bowl. There were no such issues for Sanders, however, who immediately jumps off the field from a size standpoint and has an awesome collection of skills.

Fields did not play. He was dressed and on the sidelines, but did not play.
Possibly because Georgia did not try any fake punts.

Taulia Tagovailoa

Two years ago I watched Tua Tagovailoa in this same All-American Bowl setting. What I saw from his younger brother Taulia today is not on that level. Tua’s success at the college level undoubtedly gets projected onto his brother, but they are two different players who look to be playing at two different levels when making an apples-to-apples comparison. Physically, fundamentally and athletically, Tua had a significant advantage over Taulia at the same stage.

At least 247 mentions he is dealing with an injured shoulder and gave him an Inc. fricking Rivals.

All-American Bowl: Latest on five elite unsigned prospects

SAN ANTONIO -- With only a few unsigned players remaining, attention on said prospects has ramped up during the All-American Bowl week in San Antonio. Information can be tough to come by, but recruiting analysts Adam Gorney and Woody Wommack are on the ground in Texas and pass along the latest rumblings on five elite unsigned prospects.

Khris Bogle

Khris Bogle has watched closely the Miami coaching situation in recent days and he said the hiring of Manny Diaz after Mark Richt’s surprising retirement helps the Hurricanes “a lot.” Diaz was one of the first coaches to start recruiting the Fort Lauderdale (Fla.) Cardinal Gibbons four-star defensive end so Miami has not fallen off one bit since the Richt departure.

Alabama needs to be watched closely though. Bogle said that “you can’t go wrong” with picking the Crimson Tide and he’s especially interested in being tested by the best each day in practice. On Saturday, the four-star defensive end will commit with Miami, Alabama, Florida and Tennessee the final four.

All-American Bowl: Thoughts from day one

ALFANO WAS AMAZING

Five times in my notebook I wrote down that Antonio Alfano was doing something productive, or blowing up the interior of the offensive line, or getting in the backfield one way or another and causing problems. The five-star defensive tackle from Colonia, N.J., had an outstanding day during an East practice that was also pretty limited as installation was the focus.

The Alabama commit was unstoppable though. Listed at 6-foot-5, 285 pounds, Alfano has no bad weight on him. He’s relentless, tough, has dynamic speed, is constantly active and aggressive and dominated all day long. The Crimson Tide have another good one coming on the defensive line.

Under Armour All-America Game: Stock report for practice No. 3

ORLANDO, Fla. — As the week’s progressed, the temperatures continue to rise, and on Day Three, the Under Armour All-Americans were practicing in full pads under a bright sun.

It is January 1, but it was in the mid 80s today. Who stood out in the heat? Here is the Stock Report.

Evan Neal

What more can be said about Evan Neal? The offensive tackle that signed with Alabama has been as dominant the last couple of days as you can be. He can’t be moved. You just don’t see guys Neal’s size that can move and bend the way he does.

Nathan Pickering

Nathan Pickering is a player who has not been too active in the first couple of practices, but on Day Three, he took more reps and he was one of the most impressive. He looked fresh and he was firing off the ball with violent hands. He had offensive linemen on their heels and the Mississippi State commit was arguably the top defensive lineman today.

Ishmael Sopsher

Ishmael Sopsher comes in as the No. 1 defensive tackle in the country, and after not taking too many reps on days one and two, he was more active Tuesday, but he did not have a lot of success. He struggled to get off blocks. He has to work on his hands and moves off the ball.

I'm starting to think we should sign Nathan Pickering instead of Sopsher.

Yes Kirby can recruit but the inmates are still running the program(so to speak) over there just like they did under Richt.

At least Kirby is recruiting at a very high level and he is very good a that.....but he has benefitted from and feasted in a very weak East. Yeah he played Bama tough and almost got the win, but when he faced pretty good and well coached teams with roughly equivalent talent like LSU and Texas, he got his arse kicked. The East will get more interesting with Mullen at UF. I was impressed with the way he dismantled Michigan and Mullen can recruit as well.

I am beginning to think the same. Saw this tease tweet by Chad Simmons alluding to the fact that Sopsher is a package deal with his brother. We aren’t wasting a spot...maybe a PWO. Let’s turn the pressure up on Pickering.

Sopsher
