Next Five Offense

1. OL, Darnell Wright, Huntington (W.V.)- Wright makes the list for the second day in a row and even moves up a spot. In fact, he was very close being the day’s Alpha performer before we went with Dylan Wright. The big tackle is just so strong, tough and physical and has great feet as well. Wright is rated the No. 10 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite and is definitely pushing for five-star status by 247Sports. Tennessee currently leads Alabama and Ohio State in the Crystal Ball forecast.

2. OL, Evan Neal, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy- As much as we liked Wright, Neal wasn’t far behind. The massive tackle always impresses and his ability to slide and move his feet for a player 6-7, 350 pounds is always impressive. He has long arms and once he locks his man out, the play is over. Neal, rated the No. 20 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite, signed with Alabama.

3. WR, Jeremiah Payton, Neptune Beach (Fla.) Duncan Fletcher- Payton just missed the cut for top five offensive players on Sunday but jumped in today after his second straight strong workout. The Miami signee is one of the most polished receivers in what is a very good overall group. Payton isn’t a burner but he plays fast enough, has great hands and creates plenty of separation.

4. WR, Jameson Williams, Saint Louis (Mo.) Cardinal Ritter Prep- Williams can fly and will be one of the fastest players on the field in every game he plays in. He’s a legit 10.5-100m kid and was running away from defenders all day. He also showed good hands and the ability to adjust to some tough balls thrown at him. Williams, rated the No. 140 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite, signed with Ohio State.

5. OL, Kenyon Green, Humble (Texas) Atascocita- Green was the only guy we have seen through two days contain Kayvon Thibodeaux and he had a couple of impressive wins today. Green has a guard body but a tackle skill set. He moves well for a 330 pound lineman and it will be interesting to see where he ultimately plays at the next level. Green is rated No. 11 in the 247Sports Composite and signed with Texas A&M.

Top Five Defense

1. DB, Julian Barnett, Belleville (Mich.)- Barnett might have the most interceptions through two days of the event was very good today. He’s a long corner who looks all of 6-2, had several pass breakups and shows the cover skills to run with a receiver without having to clutch and grab too much. The Michigan State signee is rated the No. 62 prospect in the 247Sports Composite and has lived up to it this week.

2. DL, Charles Moore, Louisville (Miss.)- We didn’t mention Moore yesterday but after watching video of every one on one rep, we definitely should have. He played well and was even more impressive today winning just about every rep in convincing fashion. He can play inside or outside and showed a nice burst and get off. The Mississippi State commit is rated the No. 105 prospect in the 247Sports Composite and No. 87 by 247Sports.

3. DB, Brandon Turnage, Oxford (Miss.) Lafayette- Turnage is a 6-1 corner who could move to safety in college. Turnage got his hands on a ton of footballs today and plays with a suddenness that really jumped out. Has a very nice combination of length and body control and is a very confident kid. The Alabama signee is the No. 99 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite.

4. DL, Mazi Smith, Grand Rapids (Mich.) East Kentwood- Smith is one of a handful of impressive looking defensive tackles in the game. He has looked good on back to back days and really shined today. Smith is not just strong, he has good lateral mobility, a quick get off and showed he can beat an opposing lineman in multiple ways. The Michigan signee is rated the No. 137 prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite.

5. DL, Zacch Pickens, Anderson (S.C.) T.L Hanna- Pickens came alive today after a so-so day on Sunday. He’s a powerful kid with a great body and used his size and strength to his advantage. He also showed his quickness and was able to win a few of his reps right at the snap with his get-off. He has an ideal frame and should be able to move around and play inside or outside in college. The South Carolina signee is rated the No. 18 prospect in the 247Sports Composite.

News and Notes:

quote:

*One of the players we were really hoping to see work out this week was Amite (La.) defensive lineman Ishmael Sopsher. Unfortunately, for the second day in a row, the five-star tackle sat out the one on ones due to what he told was an equipment issue. Sopsher said he’s having issues finding a helmet that fits and he might not be able to participate until Wednesday.

*He didn’t make our top five offensive performers but Pinson Valley (Ala.) quarterback and Auburn signee Bo Nix was our top quarterback of the day for the second straight day. Nix is the most polished quarterback in the camp and the most accurate as well.

*Westlake Village (Calif.) Oaks Christian defensive end Kayvon Thibodeaux wasn’t as dominant as he was Sunday but he was still very good. We have said it before but when his motor is going and he’s fully motivated, there aren’t many players who can do what Thibodeaux can. He’s a high level pass rusher who we think will have an immediate impact next fall for Oregon.

*Cedar Hill (Texas) Trinity Christian School safety Lewis Cine had another nice day and is among the most athletic defensive backs in the event. He’s a high level athlete and made several nice plays on the ball in coverage.

*Yesterday we mentioned McKinney (Texas) Prosper kicker and #LSU signee Cade York was impressing. Today, it was Will Reichard who had a strong day kicking the football. The Alabama commit out of Hoover (Ala.) hit from everywhere and gets great height and distance on his kicks.

*Louisa County (Va.) linebacker Brandon Smith might be the best looking prospect here. This isn’t a great setting for linebackers and they have only been in helmets and shoulder pads the first two days but talking to some of the coaches, they raved about his size, fluidity and how well he moves for a player his size. It’s easy to see why Smith is rated the No. 14 player nationally by 247Sports.

*North Palm Beach (Fla.) The Benjamin School defensive back Kaiir Elam had another good day and could have easily made our top five defense for the second day in a row. He’s a long corner who covers really well and has had a strong week.

*Antelope Valley (Calif.) defensive back Mykael Wright had another good day battling through what looked like a lower leg injury. Wright is so strong, especially in his lower body and he’s able to knock a receiver off his route plus the speed to run and make a play down the field.

*There was very little separating the receiver group today. George Pickens, Theo Wease and Stanley King all could have easily made our top five offensive performers and had strong showings. Pickens wasn’t as dominant as he was Sunday but still got open a ton and caught everything. Wease could be the best route runner here and King was a revelation today using his 6-5 length and speed to make plays down the field.

*Grayson (Ga.) defensive back Kenyatta Watson made several plays today and was one of the more explosive corners we saw. At 6-2, Watson can really run and the Texas signee shows a very promising upside.

DE Antonio Alfano, Colonia (N.J.)

Alfano was the first player to come through and still left an impression the rest of the day. He measured 6-4 1/8 and weighed 274.6, with 33 7/8 inch arms and 11-inch hands. His testing numbers had him among the nation's premier athletes over 270 pounds and he has a trim build, carrying the weight well.

1. Fabulous freshmen to be

Now that there have been two days of practice at Under Armour, I feel a bit more comfortable with the rosters and players and think a few who have already signed could make an early impact for their future teams. Here are a few of them:

Jaylen McCullough, Tennessee – He may be a bit raw, but I like his instincts a lot and he always seems to be around the ball and know when to make a play on it. The Vols need defensive help and he’s a kid I could see getting some quality minutes as a freshman.

Kayvon Thibodeaux, Oregon – He’s still skinny but he sure is fast off the snap and handles bigger linemen well. There is no doubt he plays early and often for the Ducks and will at least be a situational pass rusher.

Theo Wease, Oklahoma—Wease gets off the line of scrimmage with such ease and is a great route runner, so there’s no way he doesn’t make a huge impact in that Oklahoma offense as a freshman.

Lewis Cine, Georgia – This might be a reach because Cine is skinny and needs to fill out, but his instincts are excellent and he’s long. I have been impressed with him through the first two days.

Erick Young, Texas A&M – Young may end up as a safety in the end, but he’s physically ready to impact at either corner or safety in the A&M defense early next year.

Mazi Smith, Michigan – I like Smith’s power a lot as he’s hard to handle and can push the pocket. Impact defensive tackles are hard to find and he could be that guy for Michigan.

Jowon Briggs, Virginia – Briggs is a great fit for Virginia’s defensive scheme and is strong and powerful enough to handle college linemen next year.

Julian Barnett, Michigan State—I like the way Barnett moves and his size and Michigan State does a great job developing defensive backs. They don’t play as many true freshmen as some other programs, but they will have to let Barnett make an impact.

Jordan Battle, Alabama – Even with the Alabama defensive backfield in good shape, I can see Battle making an impact next year because of his length and size.

Zacch Pickens, South Carolina – Pickens will play defensive end at first and might move to defensive tackle later in his career, but he will play right away for South Carolina.

Dylan Wright, Texas A&M – Wright has really good size and should continue to fill out and I like the way he snatches the ball. He looks like a college player already physically.

Jeremiah Criddell, Oklahoma – Help is needed in the Oklahoma defensive backfield and Criddell could be an early answer. He’s big enough to eventually grow into a linebacker if needed as well but I think he sees some time at safety next year.

2. Battle of the big men

Five of the six top-rated offensive tackles in the nation are here at Under Armour competing for bragging rights and rankings. Here’s how they’ve done so far:

Darnell Wright – Wright was better on day two than he was on day one and showed off ability at tackle and guard. There is no doubt that he’s raw and has some technical issues to work on, but I liked the improvement from day one to day two. We will see if he continues to improve. Has he looked like the No. 1 offensive tackle in the country? Not yet.

Evan Neal – Neal is a monster and has been consistently good the first two days and has the look of a five-star and the No. 1 tackle in the country. The consensus down here has been that Neal is better than Wright so far.

Kenyon Green – Green has been solid and I like the way he moves his feet and adjusts after initial contact. He’s a pure tackle and will be a good one for the Aggies. So far so good for Green.

Wanya Morris – Strength is the big question mark surrounding Morris as he’s been knocked around a couple of times. He worked at guard and tackle on Monday and looked better and more natural at guard, so that could be his future.

Devontae Dobbs – Dobbs isn’t quite as filled out as I expected and he’s been okay but not spectacular. He could also be a guard down the line. He’s struggled a bit with physical pass rushers.

George Pickens is by far the best WR out of that bunch. Iy may be my bias but Battle looked the most consistent of the DBs even though he didn't seem to have as many reps as some.

One thing is certain though; Devonta Lee isn't a WR.

I'm impressed with Battle's coverage skills. He plays honestly like a in box style safety. If he can cover consistently like this he may end up being a top 10 pick.

Do you think ILB could be Devonta Lee's natural-fit position?

Definitely not agile enough to be a wr. He did have good speed but nobody was fooled by his routes. Maybe an hback if he were on the offensive side of the ball.
