Maybe that kid isn't financially well off or doesn't have parents or a coach that can carry him to Clemson at any time, even if he is only three hours away. It's just a dumb strategy. Also, Dabo isn't going to bend it. He's just not that kind of guy. This strategy might last one cycle.

I think way too much is being made of Dabo saying he doesn't want to burn OVs in the spring. In most cases, it's better to do OVs later in the cycle. I doubt it's a policy that he sticks to 100%.

I mean, come on man. We can argue for the sake of arguing, but if a kid is good enough then he'll have an entourage of leeches. Someone will take a kid 3 hours up the road

I would not be surprised if Sopsher stays home. I think we have a good shot, but LSU is going to be willing to take his brother, who is probably a borderline D2 prospect, in order to get him. That could be the difference. I hope not.
If we just hold onto our guys and add two of: Toto, Sopsher, Bogle, Pickering I'd be thrilled. If we have room I'd be fine with taking a flyer on Pickens even.
Imo, Young, Sopsher and To'oto'o are the most likely additions to this class. I've seen rumblings that Rodney Sopsher might not even qualify academically. Even if he can qualify, I doubt an LSU offer that requires Ish to sign with LSU will matter. If Rodney wants to play, he needs to go somewhere besides LSU.

With Reichard and Tyson possibly gray shirting does that leave us with (likely) 7 spots to play with (with 3 of those currently being filled by Young, Robinson, and Williams)?
Tyson is not a grayshirt candidate. He's already on campus practicing. We've speculated that his family might pay his way through Dec-2019 and then he could get a scholarship in Jan-2020 and count toward 2020 class limits. If so, I think he'd be classified as a walk-on until then. I'm pretty sure Reichard will also enroll in Jan-2020. I don't think anyone will grayshirt.
This Note explains potential ways to take more than 25. That link is on the 3rd line of the 2nd post in this thread. We might be able to take 28 without any blueshirts. That note also explains a loophole that may allow us to take 3 more as blueshirts. The stuff in that note is why we show "(28-31)" as the potential class size range.
Blueshirts must be nonrecruited (no arranged off-campus meetings with coaches, no OV and no NLI). Blueshirts cannot practice (including voluntary summer training programs) with the team until fall camp begins and may then get a fall scholarship. The only targets who can still qualify as nonrecruited are Christian Williams, Sopsher, To'oto'o, Pickens and Pickering.

If that's how you see it.
I'm saying if he's trying make it sound like he's taking a hard-line approach, which is what his quotes suggest, then you can't make exceptions to it without ruffling feathers.
We will have to see over several years how this impacts their recruiting. Their class this year is down pretty significantly in average player ranking from last year, but they also had two of the top five players in the class last year so it's hard to draw too much from it.

We close with a surprising bit of news from the signing day press conference of Clemson head coach Dabo Swinney, who announced that his program would not be hosting spring official visits for the foreseeable future.
“If a guy won’t come here unofficially, on their own, he’s not coming here for four years. I want guys that have a little pain to get here,” Swinney said, according to ClemsonSportsTalk.com.
This sounds like a man who has gotten too comfortable with his job and too big for his britches.
Also, Thursday good luck post coming in a little bit. It's my jib

Dabo just does stuff differently up there. He has since he started. They target guys and don't miss much, but they don't cast a giant wide net. They almost never have de-commitments.
Like it or not, his whole "family" sell has worked wonders for them and seems legitimate. This is just another layer of it.

Saban wasn’t going to pay... I mean play ball.. ;) Good luck to the young man, he should be a good one if he keeps his mind right. Lots of talent and a frame to build on.
FWIW, a few minutes (less than an hour) before he signed with UGa, he talked to Bama's staff and thanked them for recruiting him, but said he was signing with OM (supposedly... from someone extremely reliable). At some point in those few minutes, he decided on UGa.

It struck me as odd the guy who was standing beside Dean holding burner phone the whole time before he announced.

This is from Bone so just get that out of the way. Still, interesting nug on Dax Hill
quote:
Dax Hill/Jordan Battle- I made a post about this on Wednesday. I think Alabama felt like they were being held hostage on Hill. Take Battle and lose me or don’t take Battle and I still may flip. Yeah, Bama doesn't play that game at all. Hill is an elite player. Yes, he's the best safety, but Bama doesn't care. You want to come on board and compete with these guys and earn a spot or you don't. Simple as that. Alabama wasn't passing on Battle. They loved him/recruited him for a very long time.
