Top 100 S Jaylen McCollough after visit to Knoxville: ‘Tennessee is high on my list’
quote:
Orange shirt
BUFORD, Ga. — Tennessee coach Jeremy Pruitt knows how to put together a solid recruiting weekend, and prospects typically have come away impressed with a visit to Rocky Top.
Jaylen McCollough is no different as the 4-star safety showed up to the Nike Opening Regional camp on Sunday wearing a Tennessee shirt.
“[The shirt] was there,” McCollough told SEC County. “Tennessee is high on my list. So, you know, just rep the school.”
Saturday was McCollough’s second visit to Tennessee since the new staff took over in December. The visits have put Tennessee on his top-7 list.
“It was a great visit,” McCollough said. “I talked with Coach Pruitt and Coach [Charles] Kelly. We watched spring practice. Coach Pruitt was just empathizing the urgency and the demand to get better. Coach Kelly and I watched some game and practice film. He told me to just look at Nigel Warrior, the safety. He can see me in that position.”
The 6-foot-1, 190-pound McCollough is an important prospect in the 2019 class for the Vols. Warrior could turn pro if he puts together a good junior season. Micah Abernathy and Todd Kelly Jr. are exhausting their eligibility after the 2018 season. There will be an immediate need in the secondary.
McCollough is the typical safety this coaching staff will target. The Powder Springs, Ga., product played running back as a freshman before moving to the other side of the ball. He’s a power hitter who can also track the ball in the air.
McCollough can play up near the line and stop the run. This is a key trait the staff looks for at safety.
It’s easy to see why he’s such a priority with the staff. McCollough hears from the Tennessee coaches every week.
“I have a great relationship with Coach Kelly,” McCollough said. “We call, we text.”

Tennessee might have gained some ground in McCollough’s recruitment during the weekend, but Alabama is still in the driver’s seat.
McCollough is looking for the feel of a campus more than anything else. Early playing time might be a factor, but it’s not the most important thing.
“Just the environment,” McCollough said. “Making sure my family and I are comfortable. Just whatever best fits me. That’s about it.”
McCollough said he has plans for another trip to Knoxville at some point but isn’t sure when. Still, this would leave the visit count way short of Alabama. He has been to Tuscaloosa, Ala., seven or eight times.
“Honestly, I’ve really lost count on how many times I’ve been there,” McCollough told SEC Country’s Chris Kirschner. “The environment and atmosphere is great. I love the coaches. It feels like home. Every time I’m there, it just feels like home.”
That sounds like a prospect leaning toward Alabama. It’s also worth noting the coveted safety was wearing Alabama gloves during the camp on Sunday.
There is still time for Tennessee to bridge the gap, especially if McCollough does make a third trip to Knoxville to see this staff. He plans to cut his list to four this summer then take his official visits. A decision is planned for some time in the fall.

Tennessee recruiting: Vols aiming for top talent to build offensive line
quote:
Tennessee can absolutely grab some home run signatures. It is what coach Jeremy Pruitt and his staff are aiming for — and they need to get it done.
It’s not always the most exciting, but the home runs will come first by rebuilding the offensive line. Offensive coordinator Tyson Helton wants to run a pro-style system built on a power running game. Tennessee doesn’t have the size or depth to truly accomplish this right now.
The Vols will take Jackson Lampley. The 4-star Nashville, Tenn., guard was the first 2019 commitment for the staff. He was always going to end up at Tennessee, but he’s a home run nonetheless.
Tennessee hosted 5-star tackle Darnell Wright this weekend. He came to campus with his coach, which is a good development for the Vols. Landing a talent as good as Wright would elevate the class to another level.
The Vols are in the top-2 with 4-star tackle Wanya Morris along with Auburn. Tennessee is trending in his direction, too.
Landing all three would give the Vols a great offensive line, for starters. Then I think a quarterback and running back and wide receivers will follow suit. The coaching staff wants to build the offensive line from the outside in. Knocking some of the commitments at the position out of the park is paramount right now.
Last year, the early signing period in December provided an interesting wrinkle in its first year. A lot of the top programs locked up around 80 percent of their class. This allowed them to turn their entire focus to just a handful of prospects for National Signing Day in February.
Expect this to be the strategy for the majority of programs this season. It hurt Tennessee to make a late hire last December, and the Vols were scrambling down the stretch to fill out the class.
It’s still so far out, that it’s not clear which prospects are deciding in December and which will wait until February this go-round. Tennessee likely will be pushing for signatures in the early signing period, though.

Will LSU offer in-state CB Chester Kimbrough?
quote:
Chester Kimbrough has generated a ton of buzz on the recruiting trail this spring, collecting offers from Alabama, Texas, Michigan and Florida, among several other notable college football powers. Naturally, it begs the question of whether LSU will be the next to offer the talented in-state prospect.
LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond has been in touch with Kimbrough a lot in recent weeks. Kimbrough attended the first day of spring football practice, then sat down with Raymond for a meeting afterward. The staff is hoping to bring Kimbrough back on campus more over the next few weeks, evaluate him during Warren Easton (La.) High School practice in April and hopefully encourage the 4-star corner to camp at LSU for a second consecutive year in June.
Kimbrough is not opposed to camping at LSU and insisted that he is still open to the in-state team — even if an offer comes through late.
Right now, however, Raymond’s cornerback board for 2019 is led by 5-star Dunham (La.) prospect Derek Stingley Jr. and 4-star Edna Karr (La.) prospect Devin Bush. Out-of-state targets include Texas 4-star Marcus Banks and Alabama 4-star Christian Williams. Remember that the Tigers are holding tight to 4-star Tennessee cornerback commit Maurice Hampton.
At 6-foot and 168 pounds, Kimbrough would likely be a fit as a nickel in LSU’s system. That’s something Raymond would love to see up close and personal during the evaluation period next month and in a camp setting against elite competition.
Remember that when dealing with in-state prospects, LSU must be careful about the timing of offers. When it comes to Louisiana talent, LSU must be ready to accept a commitment after an offer is extended. Racey McMath and Cameron Wire are two recent examples of this from the past two signing classes. McMath didn’t earn his offer until the elite prospect camp in June; Wire was offered in the midst of the spring evaluation period.
Kimbrough is one of the top man-to-man corners not only in the state, but in the country. He’s certainly deserving of an offer from LSU, but he will have to show mutual interest and make visits and camp appearances in order to procure one. We will see what transpires over the next three months in regards to that.

I'm really getting a feeling that we will "over recruit" Ani Izuchukwu. Meaning we will sign someone rated higher than him.
I may be wrong though.
I think the staff likes Ani a lot. If Bama landed 5* Nolan Smith or 5* Kayvon Thibodeaux that might push Ani out of the class, especially if one of them signed in Dec. But, I think Bama wants to take 6 LBs (2 ILB, 2 OLB, 2 versatile I/OLB), so Ani might be a take anyway. If I had to predict the LB class today: ILBs Dean, Henry; OLBs Mwikuta, Izuchukwu; I/OLBs Bentley, Diabate.
Since Smith and Thibodeaux are OLBs and Mikwuta is pretty versatile, I think Diabate would get pushed out instead of Izuchukwu. Also, if Bama lands Christian Harris, he may not push any LBs out, since Harris is so versatile -- he could play LB, DB or WR.
It's early though, the board could get shuffled depending on how these kids and the LBs on our roster do this fall. For example, if guys who could play ILB like Cowan and Davis improve a lot, Bama might want Dean, Bentley and Harris instead of Henry.

Listening to his interviews Nolan Smith is all Georgia IMO. Don't think we should be pushing nobody away for him.

Bama just signed the juco DL Tevita Musika

I doubt Bama has enough confidence in flipping Smith to slow play a really good OLB prospect like Izuchukwu or Diabate if they want to sign with us in Dec. Iow, Smith would have to flip and sign in Dec. I also think Smith sticks with UGA.

As someone who grew up as a Bama fan in the post Bear but pre Saban era: This shite’s a lot of fun.
There was a time our only connection to Hawaii was talking about scheduling a game there at the end of the season to give our players a bowl type game while on a bowl ban.

Breaking: Alabama lands JUCO DL Musika (BamaOnLine)
quote:>>> Highlights - hudl
Alabama bolstered its defensive line depth going into next season with its latest commitment from Tevita Musika, BamaOnLine has confirmed. The College of San Mateo (Calif.) product announced his pledge to the Crimson Tide following an official visit to Tuscaloosa over the weekend.
Alabama offered the 6-foot-1, 300-pounder earlier this month after head coach Nick Saban said the Tide would continue looking at options both at quarterback and along the defensive line in his post-National Signing Day press conference. The Tide lost Bobby Brown to Texas A&M, and Malik Langham opted for Florida over the Tide back in February leaving UA with just two true defensive line signees in its 2018 class in Stephon Wynn and Christian Barmore.
Musika garnered interest from Texas A&M and Kansas, but after the Tide put the offer on the table it was clear it was most likely the team to beat.
“They’re the national champs,” Musika said of what sticks out about the Tide. “You can’t really get better than Bama. They have the No. 1 weight room. I think if I read it right it said that their facilities are better than most professional facilities. It’s going to be hard not to commit. Like I said, they’re the best. They’re ranked the No. 1 team in all of college football right now.”
Originally a member of the 2015 class, the junior college product took some time off from school and had a stint at Foothill College in California before ending up at College of San Mateo. Last season, the Milpitas, Calif. product racked up 42 tackles, six sacks, and two forced fumbles.
Musika has three years to play two remaining on his eligibility sheet. Tide defensive coordinator Tosh Lupoi led the charge on landing Musika.

Let's hope he isn't Jamar King 2.0.
Likely just play in mop up duty.

I hear you, but FWIW he's definitely a different looking prospect than Jamar - though I don't know if that means he'll be a bigger contributor.
Jamar had pretty good measurables (besides age I guess). I don't have a tape measure handy, but I'm fairly confident that Tevita is lacking in the measurables. Urban went pretty hard after Jamar too, while Tevita doesn't have a lot of teams pursuing. I assume (along with a great position need) that the staff saw more in him. The staff usually doesn't stray much from measurables so interested to see how this works out.
To be honest, if he can give us 10 decent snaps a game then it's probably a hit. Also, he has three to play two so there is a chance he redshirts to get used to competition and weight/conditioning program and becomes a contributor in 19&20.
We really needed another NT/DT in the program, but I know Saban wouldn't have used a scholarship on him if he didn't think he could contribute on Saturdays.

Jamar is also the anti-posterboy for those who claim Bama cuts players. If Bama cut players they didn't think would contribute then how does one explain Jamar (along with countless others).
I'm assuming Jamar did everything he was asked and with a proper attitude but just didn't have enough to play over a very talented group in front of him.

I can't imagine this JUCO guy contributing much. Seems like his only other offer was Kansas, and he's not even ranked by 247. Plus he looks really short, and too heavy for his frame. Hopefully he proves me wrong and becomes a big contributor for us, but this feels more like a warm body for the scout team than a future big-time player to me.
Based on practice photos, Wynn looks huge. Like NG huge. If he and Mathis can lock down NG with Dwight giving some snaps here and there we might be good there.
I hope we go hard after the Clemson DL looking for a new home. That would be a big get.

Saban plays the psychology game like none other. This does two things, fills an immediate need and adds another Hawaiian which may help with FAATUI
