2020 dual-threat QB talks early offers from Georgia and NC State
quote:
Robby Ashford is a prospect that jumps out as soon as he steps off the bus. He is a 6-foot-3, 205 pound athlete who is a dual-threat quarterback at Hoover (Ala.).
This spring and fall will be very important to him. He grew up following the Hoover program and he is now going to be the leader of one of the top high school football programs in the country.
A handful of schools have already offered despite him not being a high school starter yet. Two fo those are Georgia and NC State. Each has his attention.
IN HIS OWN WORDS: "When NC State came through and offered me a few weeks ago, they told me that they like everything about me," said Ashford. "They feel I can fit into their program well and that they love how I can throw the football.
"They talked to me about their offense, how they throw the ball around and how they have had a quarterback throw for 3,000 yards each of the past two years, so I like what I heard. I want to try to get up there for camp in the summer to see how it is.
"I watched Georgia this past season and I love Georgia. I love coach Smart and I love how they develop quarterbacks. The offense they run is great and they know how to balance the run and the pass there.
"When I was at their camp last summer, that is when Georgia offered me. I got to see the campus and I love the environment there. Everything is really nice, their facilities are top of the line and I could see myself there.
"I also have offers from Missouri, Illinois and Jacksonville State. Duke is showing some interest and I have heard from Clemson, Auburn and Mississippi State.
"I do not have any real favorites yet. I want to explore my options and just see what it out there."
RIVALS REACTION: Ashford is a two-sport star at Hoover and he loves football and baseball. Some think he could even be a better baseball player. He has a big arm, he has a great frame and he is drawing a lot of early interest despite not starting at Hoover yet. This 2018 season will be big for him as a football prospect. He is now the starter, so he gets to showcase his ability. Clemson along with the two in-state schools are definitely schools he has his eye on that has yet to offer. Georgia really impressed him last summer as well.

Right now it looks like Ani Izuchukwu will be the only one Bama takes from TN in the 2019 class. Bill Norton committed to UGA. Bama is in good shape with targets higher on the board than the other TN guys with offers. It's still early, though.

The last CB put in for him was to Mississippi State FWIW.

We haven't done a lot of moving and shaking in regards to Tennessee recruits since 2010. 2 of them Tennessee boys from that 2008 class, they Bama legends tho'.

The state of Tennessee hasn’t exactly been very deep since 2008. But I feel Jordan Davis in the 2018 class will have a great career.

I see someone put in a CB for Will Reichard.

Yep. Jordan Davis (2018 signee) is gonna be a good one, imo. I think Bama will try to bulk him up from his current Jack weight into a DE (DL).
TN has recently become one of the top states in producing 4-5* players (metro Nasville growth).

I like Davis a lot too. I feel the way about recruiting Tennessee like I feel about recruiting Mississippi. Be very selective, too much funny business up there. Especially with Fat Phil reclaiming power a top a mound of twinkees and bbq ribs.
ETA: I'm interested to see what happens between Georgia and Tennessee in the next couple of years. Pruitt/Fulmer and Kirby seem like they might be oil and water. There is potential for some real drama between those two on the field and off in the not to distant future.

Yep. Sam Spiegelman, LSU homer. Good sign. UA, LSU and UGA = his top 3. I think Reichard may publicly commit to Bama any day now.

Me too. Recruiting wise, Pruitt should focus on landing the in-state guys he wants and targeting the GA kids (especially Atl & north GA) that UGA won't have room for -- low 4-star, high upside, keen on early PT. Pruitt has connections in GA (Sherrer too) and should try to create a trend of GA kids to UT. For example, UT is trending very well for TE Jackson Lowe from Rome, GA.
Same strategy applies for recruiting other nearby border state areas; i.e., Pruitt should use UGA's, CU's & UA's strength to his advantage, by going after the guys that aren't as high on their boards. Last cycle, Pruitt went after too many long shots and whiffed on almost all of them. Big mistake. But if Pruitt plays it smart, he can land enough low 4-star/high upside guys (via selling early PT) that in 2 to 3 years he'll have a good team.

Not sure of his name but he looks like he would be our backup slash goal line QB ala Tebow when he was a freshman.
Eta: never mind, Saint to the rescue. Looks like they are going to start him out at DT (at least during media viewing periods).
