Kelvin Joseph
The contenders: LSU, Alabama, Auburn, Florida State
Breakdown: Joseph is slated to take at least three official visits in the month of January but said on Monday that he could announce a decision as soon as this week. The mixed messages make it tougher to read on what Joseph is going to do, but it’s hard to imagine him landing anywhere else but with the hometown Tigers.
The pick: LSU

Patrick Surtain
The contenders: Alabama, LSU, Miami, Clemson
Breakdown: Surtain is a seasoned vet when it comes to dealing with the media and has managed to keep from tipping his hand throughout the process. He still has visits to take in January and those could change things but right now his family ties to the state of Louisiana combined with his relationship with LSU defensive backs coach Corey Raymond makes the Tigers the favorite.
The pick: LSU

Army Bowl: Gorney's takeaways from Day 1

WADDLE IMPRESSES
A lot of the hype coming into Army Bowl week was about the outstanding group of defensive backs from Texas led by five-star Anthony Cook and high four-stars Jalen Green and Caden Sterns. But it was receiver Jaylen Waddle from Houston (Texas) Episcopal who burned some of those guys and many others during one-on-one drills all day. Waddle has a lot of shake in his game and he is an excellent route runner who doesn’t slow down when making his move. The uncommitted four-star was fantastic and was arguably the most dynamic receiver on the West squad.

He was briefly mentioned in the Texas A&M stuff. But they seem to be after the Notre Dame DC.

That's what I thought but I wasn't sure. I thought there was only supposed to be one more departure and that was Dunbar.

IF DA left any chance to pull Corey Raymond here. Seems the relationships he builds with DBs on the recruiting trail is hard to overcome for other coaches. Plus the melt would be fun to watch as well.

1. What we are seeing in Florida
It was a cold and rainy second practice at Under Armour so takeaways weren’t easy but here are some of my thoughts
Penn State running back commitment Ricky Slade will be a big part of his team’s offense. He’s been running effectively off tackle and up the gut and his receiving skills are excellent. He should touch the ball at least 15 times if his team wants to move the chains.
The quarterback play wasn’t much better on day two, but that can be attributed to the rain and wind. Nebraska signee Adrian Martinez was still the best passer on the day, Jacob Sirmon, a Washington signee, improved the most from day one to day two and Joey Gatewood (Auburn) was solid but ran more than he passed. Florida signee Emory Jones continued to struggle sailing the ball and UCLA commitment Dorian Thompson-Robinson was all over the map with his accuracy again. Stanford signee Jack West probably had the worst day in the rain.
Two of the best catches of the day were by big receivers. Penn State commitment Justin Shorter made a great catch down the sidelines on a ball thrown over the wrong shoulder and Justyn Ross made the catch of the day, a one-handed TD grab falling backwards.
Tennessee signee Alontae Taylor may struggle here and there catching the football, but he has been getting consistently open through the first two practices.
Quindarious Monday had a good day at defensive back as the Auburn signee had two interceptions that I saw. Asante Samuel, a Florida State signee, was also very solid for his team.
As they were on Monday, the Team Highlight defenders were impressive, led Monday by Trey Dean. The Florida signee has been the most physical and aggressive defensive back on either team. One disappointment has been Texas safety signee BJ Foster who came into the week pushing for a fifth star but has been a step late and beaten in solo coverage too often.
The first non five-star at the event I could be pushing for is offensive tackle Nick Petit-Frere, who has been excellent. He has looked really good in his battles with Jordan Davis, who was a guy on the five-star cusp as well. His frame is excellent, his footwork is awesome and I love the way he uses his hands. Delone Scaife would be up there as well if he were a little longer and taller, because he’s been excellent as well.
Florida State signee A.J. Lytton has been very solid every time I’ve watched him on long passes. He’s a long strider and can make up ground, gets his head around at the right now and hasn’t been outrun. He doesn’t make flashy plays, he’s just very solid.
Defensive end Jayson Oweh, who could end up at Penn State, reminds me a lot of Shane Simmons from a few years ago who also ended up at Penn State.
Speaking of Penn State, P.J. Mustipher was very impressive on the inside for the second day in a row. He’s a much better prospect out of high school than his brother Sam was. Sam is now the center for Notre Dame.
Virginia Tech commitment Cameron Goode may be sawed off and needs to shed some pounds, but he’s quick and aggressive. He has blown up a few run plays and has done well in pass rush one-on-ones. He’ll be a plugger for the Hokies.

3. SEC going home early from playoff
Quick prediction time for you on the two playoff games tonight. Many of you will read this when the games are over so have fun laughing at me…
Oklahoma 34 Georgia 17 – The Sooners offense is too potent and the defense shows up and stops the run for the most part.
Clemson 24 Alabama 21 – The defensive line of Clemson dominates and stuffs the run and Kelly Bryant does enough to lead the team to victory.
So congrats to Georgia and Alabama on their sure victories now that I have jinxed OU and Clemson.

UA All-America Game: Takeaways from Monday's practices

ORLANDO, Fla. – Here are some thoughts and analysis from day two of Under Armour All-America Game week.

5. Two Florida OL to watch
Two of the top offensive tackles during the first two days have been Nicholas Petit-Frere and Richard Gouraige. Petit-Frere has been more consistent to this point, but Gouraige has flashed several times and has shown the potential that should make him a contributor at the next level.
Both have shown very well against the top defensive ends on Team Spotlight such as Jordan Davis and KJ Henry, but it will be more even more interesting to see how they do on Thursday night against Team Highlight, which includes the trio of Brenton Cox, Eyabi Anoma and Tyreke Smith.
Since the two have been lining up as bookend tackles during the first two days, seeing them on the field together during the game will give them another opportunity to shine.

6. Physical linebackers
The practice setting during for an all-star game isn’t always the best opportunity to showcase the abilities of a linebacker, so while many of them have been rather quiet during the first two practices, physically several look prepared to contribute immediately at the collegiate level.
First is Quay Walker, the Alabama signee from Georgia, who already looks like he could be playing for the Tide. Then there's Teradja Mitchell, who signed with Ohio State, could be the next dominant inside linebacker in Columbus. Also worth mentioning are Jack Lamb, an outside linebacker signed with Notre Dame, who has played angry for two days, and Xavier Peters, who looks bigger than some of the defensive ends in attendance. Fully unleashed on Thursday night, expect several of these players to make a serious statement.

Pappoe has hit the pause button
quote:
Owen Pappoe almost committed early in 2017 and he even thought about it once or twice in 2016. He has been very close on at least a couple of occasions, then he announced that he would commit in December 2017 in the fall.
On Halloween, the 6-foot-1, 202 pound linebacker out of Loganville (Ga.) Grayson announced a top three of Clemson, Georgia and Nebraska.
There was a coaching change in Lincoln earlier this month and the Huskers are now out of the race for the No. 15 prospect in the country.
Pappoe is no longer planning to commit in 2017 either.
"Nebraska kind of shook things up and I do not want to make a decision until I know 120-percent that the school is right for me, so I am slowing things down," said Pappoe. "I just do not want to rush this. I still have plenty of time to make the right decision, so I have a new plan."
What he wants to do now is, take three official visits to schools in the spring, then his last two in the fall and make his decision late in 2018. He is an early enrollee, so Pappoe said, "I know I am now on the clock."
A school that some felt Pappoe was leaning to very early in the process has re-entered this race despite having a coaching change.
"Alabama is back in this. Even though coach [Jeremy] Pruitt has moved on to Tennessee, I have a great relationship with Tosh Lupoi and Alabama is a school I am looking at harder now.
"I have been talking to Tosh about twice a week lately and I just have new interest in them. We talk about the next defensive coordinator and how it will be a great hire by coach [Nick] Saban, how they develop guys and things like that."
Alabama's rival, Auburn is another school high on Pappoe's list. Linebackers coach Travis Williams is the main reason why the Tigers are in this.
With the emergence of Alabama and Auburn in the top group, those two and all schools are trailing two close to home.
"Clemson and Georgia are my top two schools," said Pappoe. "I have visited both schools a bunch, I have great relationships with multiple coaches on each staff and I know they are going to be on my list until I make my decision."
Pappoe predicts Dabo Swinney and his Tigers to repeat as national champions in 2018. He sees Clemson defeating Georgia in the finals.
When asked about his top two, Pappoe said they are "similar" schools and a lot is the same other than how they want to use him in their defensive scheme. Clemson likes him more as a defensive back and Georgia wants him at inside linebacker.
Although he has two favorites, the national recruit is nowhere near a decision [right now]. He is going to give other schools a chance and one is Tennessee. He is set to visit Knoxville in January.
"I am looking at Tennessee, Ohio State, LSU and Auburn for visits in 2018. I may take official visits to a few of those, but nothing is set yet.
"The only visit I know of right now is an unofficial visit to Tennessee January 13. I talked to coach Pruitt a lot when he was at Alabama, so I have a good relationship with him and I want to see how is going to do things there.
"I know he is going to take a lot of what he did at Alabama, so he is probably going to change things there."
As we close out 2017, Pappoe is thinking he will announce his decision during the early signing period in 2018. That is almost a year from now. Can he wait that long?
"With me, you never know," said Pappoe with a laugh. "My mind is always going and I am always changing my mind. I could just up and commit one day if I feel I am ready.
"The main reason I have not committed to anyone yet is because I do not want to be a guy who commits, decommitts and then commits again. I want to know for sure, so when I feel that way, I will commit."
