Ex-Miami commit gives Alabama 4-star talent at corner

quote:

Josh Jobe

School:
Cheshire Academy (Connecticut)

Position: CB

Height/weight: 6-foot-1, 180 pounds

Also considered: Miami, Michigan

247Sports composite ranking: Jobe is a four-star recruit, rated as the No. 95 prospect nationally, the No. 13 cornerback and No. 1 prospect from Connecticut.

How he fits into Alabama's plans: Jobe was a late pick-up for Alabama after he flipped his commit from Miami to the Crimson Tide. He became the fourth cornerback to join the 2018 class that's in dire need of secondary talent with the entire starting defensive backfield expected to be gone after the season. Saivion Smith, Jalyn Armour-Davis and Nadab Joseph are the other corners in this class. Jobe brings that ideal size to the mix

Projection for 2018: Jobe isn't one of the early enrollees who'll be on campus for spring practice. Smith, a JUCO transfer who previously played at LSU, is already on campus. Joseph plans to join him as a January enrollee while Davis will be there in the summer. Alabama faced a similar situation in 2010 when the entire starting secondary graduated. Dee Milliner, then a true freshman, eventually won a starting job so it's not unprecedented. It's easier to adjust and learn the cornerback job than safety, so it'll be interesting to see how the new blood competes with incumbents like Trevon Diggs, Shyheim Carter and Jared Mayden.

Perhaps Saban, being the old school type guy he is, just wasn't prepared (I'm wearing kevlar) for this first early signing period. I'm no coach, but I wasn't expecting this many kids, especially blue chip types, signing in this early period. Kirby Smart was obviously ahead of the game this time, and with their class this year, they could afford to take a chance on the kid that may or may not qualify. I expect next year, Saban will get his share of the early elite.

I will admit that I did not think it would be the spectacle that it played out as. I figured it would mostly me early enrollees and underrated guys solidifying a spot.

That's what I thought it would be. Wrong answer.

I think Saban was tentative and Kirby went balls to the wall.

You aren't the only one who thought less kids would sign. I saw some projections when this was announced that only 20-25% of the recruits would sign during this window.

That number was closer to 75% and now that guy from Rivals is saying this will overtake the February NSD as the premier signing day moving forward.

I do not see the “ He wasn’t prepared” or whatever narrative Saban has alluded to bc all but 3or 4 commits signed . Kinda like Andy staples tweeted” if you are COMMITTED” then sign, if not then you truly aren’t committed and that seems to be the case with our so called commits we have left

I am a true Tide fan, I asked a question. I honestly didnt think Kirby and UGA would be on this kind of roll in his second year. Thats all.

Observation for you to consider: As you did in the post about about UGA, you sometimes post kneejerk overreactions to news or events and jump to extreme conclusions.

Advise for you to consider: Don't use hyperbole when you state questions, concerns or opinions you want to discuss. Postpone judgements until you get feedback.

Try that and you'll probably get a much better reception from fellow Bama fans.

Might as well cancel the Feb date because you damn near killed it yesterday anyway. Yes, this year there are still some significant kids out there but when everyone sees what happened yesterday that blew away nearly every projection, how long before they jump on board too? The dynamic just completely changed.

And the recruiting calendar will shift for Saban and staff to attack this a different way for 2019.

But it still leaves the concern over grade issues for some prospects. Sometimes that extra six weeks you would have with a February NSD is more telling for some these kids.

I guess what I am getting at is that we didn’t have more signees bc we didn’t have any more commits. If we had 22 commits then it would be over . I like the early date bc at least you don’t have to worry about the bulk of your class flipping, committing, de-commiting, multiple hats on the table even though I am committed bs

It is nice to not have to visit the signed kids in February to make sure they are loved.

I'm waiting for the first hammer to drop in this regard.

It'll be interesting to say the least.

Absolutely.

Our staff doesn't have to waste time and resources on kids who would have signed anyway and can now focus on 12-15 targets instead of 40.

It works for other sports and occasionally recruits ask out if the HEAD coach leaves but most programs don’t make changes AFTER signing day unless someone retires(Saban eventually) . What a sad day that will be. Some of my friends and spoiled fans on here will appreciate it when it’s gone. Lol

That burden is a downside, but the big advantage is you can sign and lockdown your true commits to prevent potential January poaching/flipping. You don't have to keep recruiting them to protect them. Instead, you can regroup and focus all your recruiting efforts in January on filling your remaining open spots.

The way you have this worded makes me think you’re not a bama fan. Either that or you’ve recently became one as a band wagoner. I sort of felt bad for you with people ragging your arse but that was when I thought you were a true bammer

He's not, it was obvious by the way he posted he wasn't a bama fan but this last post is ban worthy, can't have obvious trolls on the board.
