Summary of KN's recruiting insider from yesterday

quote:

- AU will have 3 assistant coaches on the road today. Kodi Burns is going to visit Hoover to see Shedrick Jackson and George Pickens. Rodney Garner is going to Birmingham to check out Coynis Miller and Jalen Cunningham. Not sure where Herb Hand will be but expects him to stay in AL/GA region

Dunbar and Garner are going to have a street fight in Birmingham tonight.

quote:

- AU not feeling as good about flipping 4* CB Kyler McMichael. After Clemson got wind of his last unofficial visit the weekend before season started they have shored up his verbal. AU will continue to push for McMichael tho. Says AU is looking hard for a top corner in the junior college ranks. AU really likes 4* Saivion Smith formerly of LSU. Expect AU to check him out later this year, teammates with Daquan Newkirk

quote:

- Bama is now pushing harder for Tommy Bush instead of Seth Williams now that Justyn Ross is trending Clemson. If Tide land Bush that could really help AU get Williams

His highlights make me think Dontae Hightower. Not saying he will be or is anything like him. Just remember Don't a pulling away from offenses and was the same size.

Alabama landed another high-ceiling guy on Friday in Boling (Texas) High athlete Vernon Jackson.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound Jackson chose to play for the Crimson Tide over an offer list that included his other finalists TCU and Texas A&M.

Nick Saban and his staff had Jackson in camp and loved the traits they saw from the high school quarterback to play linebacker for them on the national stage.

Jackson is a winner on the prep level, guiding his team to the Region title game as a sophomore and the the state championship contest as a junior where he bulldozed at times, but mostly outran defenders on his way to 2,091 yards rushing and 33 touchdowns.

A strong prospect with good balance, I could see Jackson developing into just about any of the linebacker positions in Alabama’s defense. As a MIKE he has the traits to play sideline to sideline and chase the football, he could also take on offensive guards at the point of attack. Jackson has the size to play on the perimeter and be a pass rusher or challenge offensive tackles and tight ends in the run game.

The 247Sports Composite ranks Jackson as the nation’s No. 17 athlete.

Alabama’s current class rises to No. 23 in the 247Sports Recruiting Rankings, highlighted by this front seven group that includes Top247 defensive linemen Stephon Wynn and Cameron Latu and Top247 outside linebacker Quay Walker.

While many 2018 players in Texas have made commitments over the summer ahead of their senior seasons, there are still a number of players in the state that have two teams primarily competing for their upcoming commitments. Here’s a look at the highest-ranked uncommitted players and the two teams in the hunt for each.

Jaylen Waddle

FLORIDA STATE VS. ALABAMA

It’s likely too early to say that things are definitively down to Alabama and Florida State. The Seminoles, however, have long been thought to be the top contender for Waddle - particularly with former teammate Marvin Wilson in Tallahassee. Alabama is thought to be the one making the push slightly out in front of the rest of the pack, following his attendance at the Crimson Tide’s season opener against the Seminoles.

Waddle had planned on taking his official visit to Florida State this weekend, but that is likely going to be postponed now that FSU’s game against Miami has been rescheduled for Oct. 7. There are enough teams in the mix that he’ll likely take all of his officials, but it seems as though the Seminoles and Tide are the frontrunners for the time being.

Bobby Brown

ALABAMA VS. OKLAHOMA

Brown is set to announce his commitment in early November, and has been eyeing an official visit to Alabama in October when the Tide host Tennessee. Brown said in July that he felt as though Oklahoma had cooled a bit on him, but after the fast start the Sooners have had this season with Lincoln Riley at head coach, the staff should look to refocus its efforts on him. Brown has had a long relationship with the coaches on the Alabama staff, and that will be a difficult hurdle to clear for the Sooners or anyone else.

Alabama has added a commitment from one of the most versatile recruits in the 2018 class in Vernon Jackson.

Jackson, a 3-star athlete from Boling (Texas) High School, committed to Alabama over TCU and Texas A&M. He was silently committed to Alabama prior to his original commitment date of Aug. 26, which ended up getting postponed because of Hurricane Harvey.

What makes Jackson’s recruitment unique is that the Crimson Tide are recruiting him at linebacker, the Horned Frogs wanted him at defensive end and the Aggies were looking at him at running back.

The 6-foot-3, 240-pound prospect plays quarterback for his school and led Boling to the state playoffs last year. He rushed for over 2,000 yards and scored a combined 40 touchdowns as a junior.

“He’s special and freaky,” Boling coach Kevin Urbanek told SEC Country. “He’s 6-foot-3 and weighs over 240 pounds, but he moves like a skill kid. You watch him on film sometimes and you just ask yourself how he made that cut or how he does what he does at that size. He’s a special freak. That’s what I call him.”

Jackson told SEC Country on Thursday why he chose the Crimson Tide.

“They have a great program. I like it a lot there,” Jackson said. “I really like the coaches. They’re great people. They treat everyone good. I feel like I will fit in well there. I don’t know exactly where I’m going to play just yet, but I feel like I’d be a good player there.”

Alabama started looking like Jackson’s eventual landing spot back in July when he visited Tuscaloosa for the Champions Cookout. While some fans may moan about why the team is taking a 3-star athlete, you should know that Jackson isn’t one to attend recruiting camps and rarely talks to the media who do those rankings. Some scouting sites put a lot of emphasis on attending their camps in order to have your ranking boosted. Jackson couldn’t care less.

While in Tuscaloosa, Jackson ran a 4.7 40-yard dash in front of Nick Saban and Alabama defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt. Both coaches are impressed with Jackson’s athleticism and his freakish abilities in the weight room where he squats 600 pounds.

Jackson becomes Alabama’s 11th commitment in the 2018 class.

The Breakdown: What Vernon Jackson’s commitment means for Alabama

quote:

Alabama landed its 11th commitment in the 2018 class Friday afternoon when Texas 3-star athlete Vernon Jackson chose the Crimson Tide over TCU and Texas A&M.

Jackson had been a linebacker target for the Crimson Tide for several months, but he wasn’t pegged to be in this class until he visited Tuscaloosa in July for the Champions Cookout.

Some fans may yawn over Alabama landing a commitment from the nation’s No. 17 athlete, but his coach doesn’t understand how he could be rated so low.

“I don’t know how [16] guys are rated ahead of him,” Boling High School coach Kevin Urbanek said of Jackson’s ranking. “I would really like to see those guys. I know if there are that many players rated above him, I would really like to meet them. He’s such a special kid, so if someone is ahead of him, how special is that guy?”

Jackson plays quarterback and free safety for Boling, which makes him an intriguing prospect.

There aren’t many recruits in the country who play quarterback but are getting looks at linebacker and running back in the SEC. Schools have shown interest in Jackson at quarterback, running back, H-back, tight end, defensive end and linebacker.

As a junior, Jackson completed 57 of 97 attempts for 836 yards and 6 scores, along with another 2,072 yards and 33 touchdowns on the ground. He rushed for more than 500 yards and scored 7 touchdowns in the third round of the playoffs.

“You just don’t see many kids his size that can do the athletic things he can do,” Urbanek said. “Everyone comes here and asks me where I see him playing. I always tell them that is their job. You can put him wherever you want. You want him to be a D-lineman? You can put 40 pounds on him. You want him to be an inside or outside linebacker? He can do it.”

Not only is he gifted on the field, but he also holds a 3.8 GPA and is a warrior in the weight room. He can squat 600 pounds. Twitter went crazy when Penn State running back Saquon Barkley squatted 525 pounds five times. A senior in high school is already doing that. Imagine what Jackson can do when he follows a proper diet and starts Scott Cochran’s weight program.

With Jackson on board, Alabama has four linebackers committed in the 2018 class. Jackson joins Quay Walker, Jordan Davis and Cameron Latu as the other linebackers. Walker is being looked at as an outside linebacker while Davis and Latu are being recruited at Jack linebacker, which is a hybrid of outside linebacker and defensive end.

Jackson is being recruited as an inside linebacker, which is where top target JJ Peterson is being recruited, as well.

After aging-out in Florida, Miami defensive back commit Josh Jobe transferred to Cheshire (Conn.) Cheshire Academy from Miami (Fla.) Columbus but that hasn't stopped some of the nation's top programs from trying to lure him away from the Canes.

Michigan and Alabama have been pushing Jobe to take official visits and take a closer look at their programs. Jobe is working on planning those visits but there are no dates set in stone.

I'm guessing we are on the outside looking in for Ross? If we have the chance I'd take Ross though. I don't know how you can look at film and even compare Ross to Bush.

BOLING, Texas – Alabama added its eleventh commitment in its 2018 class on Friday afternoon in three-star, do-it-all athlete Vernon Jackson.

The Texas high school football standout opted for the Crimson Tide over fellow finalists TCU and Texas A&M.

“It feels good,” Jackson told BamaOnLine of getting his commitment out of the way. “I’m kind of ready to settle down and be with my school.”

The Boling community was rocked by Hurricane Harvey late last month. With the Bulldogs back in school for the first time this week, Jackson’s commitment ceremony offered a much-needed distraction.

“It feels pretty good,” Jackson said of rallying the community with the pep rally. “This thing kind of tore everybody apart and I think it’s bringing people back together. It’s just a good thing for the community.”

Jackson had his mind made up on Alabama prior to Friday, in fact he knew Tuscaloosa was where he wanted to be after his visit for the Champions Cookout in July.

“I made it almost a month ago after I got back,” Jackson said of his decision. “I spent a couple days there. It felt good.”

The three-star athlete looked back on the moment he told head coach Nick Saban he wanted to commit.

“He was happier than I’ve ever seen him,” Jackson said.

While the 6-foot-3, 240-pounder plays quarterback for Boling – a position he dominated last season rushing for over 2,000 yards and 33 touchdowns – it’s either inside or outside linebacker he projects to at the next level. Running back has been discussed as well with his primary recruiter Burton Burns.

With the decision out of the way, does Jackson plan to shut things down?

“For the most part yes,” he said. “I think I’m still going to visit a couple other schools.”

Likely schools to get those visits include Texas A&M and TCU, the two programs he’s visited the past two weekends.

Ultimately, T-Town was where Jackson has felt most comfortable at.

“When I got down there, seeing everything behind the scenes, it felt like home basically,” he said of what pushed the Tide over the Aggies and Horned Frogs.

Jackson has a message for Crimson Tide fans.

“I’ll be there pretty soon,” he said. “And Roll Tide.”

Jackson is rated the No. 17 athlete and the No. 388 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

I hope so for our boys sake! Don't get me wrong, I hope the kid isn't hurt seriously if he is indeed hurt. I just don't want our guys to face him. He embarrassed some of our boys last year!!

BOLING, Tex. -- The book on Vernon Jackson
throughout most of his recruitment is that he’s kept a pretty low profile. On Friday afternoon, he decided to change things up when he announced his commitment to Alabama in front of a raucous student body and local television during a pep rally at Boling High School.

Jackson had originally planned on announcing his commitment at the end of August, but after Hurricane Harvey smashed its way into southeastern Texas, he delayed his decision. Even after having some time to reconsider his options, as Texas A&M and TCU were considered to be the other likely finalists for his commitment, he said that he kept coming back to the Crimson Tide.

“There was a little bit of me thinking about things again,” he said. “When I got the time to reschedule it, I went to both TCU’s and Texas A&M’s games just to see how I felt about it, I felt pretty solid when I got back home.”

While Jackson has a reputation as low-key personality, his play on the field has drawn quite a bit of attention. Last season during Boling’s state championship run, he rushed for more than 2,000 yards as the team’s quarterback with 33 touchdowns.

He didn’t have to throw much with those numbers, but it’s not likely that he’ll be asked to do much of that in Tuscaloosa. He’s expected to play linebacker - although he’s not sure if that means inside or out - but he said that he’s up for the challenge.

“It’s hard to say where I’m going to end up,” he said. “Wherever I get the best chance to get on the field, that’s where I want to play … [the chance to play running back] is still up in the air; Coach (Burton) Burns is still on me pretty hard, so I’m not quite sure yet.”

Jackson’s head coach at Boling, Kevin Urbanek, said that he thinks his star player has what it takes to make that transition and has high expectations for his career on the Tide defense.

“I think that’s going to fit him perfectly,” he said. “If we could afford to play him on one side of the ball - at a bigger school, he probably would have always been an outside linebacker type if he went to a 5A, 6A school. So I think that’s going to fit him just right.”

Many expected Alabama to be in the driver's seat down the stretch in Jackson’s recruitment, as he’s visited for camps and was on-hand for Alabama’s spring game. He said that the connection that he formed with the coaches and the atmosphere he experienced during those visits was like nowhere else that he’d been.

“The fans and the coaches are great,” he said. “I trust the coaches - it’s a stable coaching staff and I like them a lot. … I got to spend about four days in Tuscaloosa and it’s kind of like small town, but it’s really not. People are really close-knit and everyone knows each other - it’s a nice place.”

Jackson credited his relationship with linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi and graduate assistant Denzell Deval as the two Tide assistants most instrumental in his recruitment by Alabama. Urbanek said that those two made a smart move identifying his player as a prospect that is going to better their program with his character as well.

“Alabama didn’t just get a heck of a football player, they got a kid that’s got his head on right,” he said. “He’s not going to make bad decisions outside of football. He’s going to attend his classes, make his grades, and they just got a good individual.”

Jackson did leave the door open just a sliver, mentioning that he still might give a thought to taking a visit to the likes of Florida, Florida State, Oklahoma or Ole Miss, but was also quick to dispel the notion that meant he wasn’t making a firm commitment.

“I feel pretty good,” he said. “I think I’m pretty much ready to shut it down; ready to move on.”
