TRUSSVILLE, Ala. — Paul Tyson comes from football royalty, but he’s making a name for himself on the recruiting trail.
Tyson, a 2019 3-star quarterback from Hewitt-Trussville High School, is Bear Bryant’s great-grandson. Tyson never met his great-grandfather, but he knows all about what Bryant accomplished in his career. If you haven’t read it yet, here’s the feature story SEC Country did on Tyson.
The 6-foot-4, 210-pound prospect doesn’t have an offer from Alabama just yet, but the Crimson Tide staff is evaluating him. It wouldn’t be surprising to see him end up a part of Alabama’s team when he graduates from high school.
SEC Country was in attendance at Hewitt-Trussville’s game on Friday night where the Huskies beat Gadsden City 38-24.
Check out Tyson’s highlights in the video above.

So it looks like the top 3 OLB's will be Mosley, Allen/Moses from what we saw in the game. Wonder what it will look like when Evans gets back. Got to think Evans plays both like he did before primarily in the middle with SDH.

Clemson the team to beat for Justyn Ross?
When a recruit doesn’t give away many clues about which school he may be leaning toward at the time, you look for other hints that may tell the story. Justyn Ross is one of those players who you need to look for other clues when it comes to the school he may be favoring.
One of the best non-verbal cues is the smile. Ross, a 4-star wide receiver from Central High School (Phenix City, Ala.), has a large, bright smile and that was on display when SEC Country’s Benjamin Wolk asked the state of Alabama’s No. 1 prospect questions regarding Clemson.
For several months now, it has seemed like an Alabama, Auburn and Clemson race for Ross. But it’s Clemson that seems to be trending these days for the big-bodied receiver.
When asked what he liked about the Tigers in their first game against Kent State, Ross said he came away impressed with Deshaun Watson’s successor, Kelly Bryant.
“Their quarterback is good,” Ross said. “He plays like Deshaun to me. He’s a great quarterback. He’s a great thrower. I didn’t see any flaws from him.”
Quarterback play, like it would be for any major receiver target, is important to Ross. He has said before that he’s been impressed with Alabama’s, Auburn’s and Clemson’s quarterback situations.
When interviewed this past Friday, and only one college football game for each school had been played up until that point, Ross said Clemson, which he visited for the third time this past weekend, had impressed him the most because the Tigers showed that they are going to spread the ball around to plenty of receivers.
“They have,” Ross said when asked if Clemson was the school that has impressed the most with their offensive style. “They can spread the ball around. They had like 15 receivers get receptions last game. They spread it around.”
As mentioned in the first paragraph, Ross usually doesn’t give revealing answers when it comes to his recruitment. But, he did answer honestly when asked about his thoughts on Alabama’s offense in its first game against Florida State.
The 6-foot-4, 197-pound prospect was in Atlanta for the game where he saw Jalen Hurts complete 10 of 18 pass attempts and only throw for fewer than 100 yards. Calvin Ridley was the only wide receiver to have a reception in that game.
While, clearly, Alabama got the result it wanted in the game, for a wide receiver with options, it was not a performance that was exciting.
“I feel like they could have opened it up a bit more, but they didn’t really have a chance to reveal their passing game too much,” Ross said.
When asked what the Tide have to do to impress him moving forward, his answer centered around making sure other receivers outside of Ridley are involved.
“I do feel like they have to spread the ball around more, but it’ll come in due time,” Ross said. “I was expecting a bit more, to be honest. I didn’t get that. I’ll probably get that in the future, though.”
That did change in the Fresno State game this past weekend. Eight receivers or tight ends caught passes against the Bulldogs, but none of the pass catchers had more than 45 yards.
I have heard from several recruits who have said other programs have negatively recruited against Alabama when it comes to the team’s passing offense. It didn’t hurt the Tide in the 2017 class as they signed four of the nation’s best in Henry Ruggs III, Jerry Jeudy, DeVonta Smith and Tyrell Shavers.
The Tide have one receiver committed in their 2018 class in 4-star prospect Xavier Williams. Alabama would like to add at least two more, with Ross being one of them.
Clemson may have a little bit of an advantage over both Alabama and Auburn because Ross got to play with Clemson 5-star quarterback commit Trevor Lawrence at Nike’s The Opening camp in Oregon this past summer. The two quickly bonded and have remained in touch.
“He wants me to be his receiver at Clemson,” Ross said of Lawrence’s message to him. “It’s hard to turn that down, but I don’t know yet.”
Alabama doesn’t have a quarterback committed in its 2018 recruiting class yet, and it may be a struggle to land a top prospect because of the team’s young depth chart at QB.
The good news when it comes to Ross is that he isn’t planning on making a commitment until National Signing Day in February. But Ross almost revealed for the first time which school may actually hold the top spot in his recruitment.
“I don’t really have a top [school], really, but …” Ross paused for a few seconds when talking about Clemson possibly being the favorite. “They’re going to be in the top [list]. I haven’t narrowed it down much. It’s hard.”
Alabama has some work to do.

Why I think Justyn Ross is trending toward Clemson
AUBURN, Ala. — Justyn Ross played in Auburn on Friday night. Moments like those could be few and far between going forward.
For those completely out of the loop, Ross is one of Auburn’s top recruiting targets. He’s the No. 8 wide receiver in the nation. He’s the No. 1 prospect in the state of Alabama. Since 2000, only Chad Jackson (Florida in 2003) and Jameis Winston to (Florida State in 2012) have left the state as the top player in Alabama.
It just doesn’t happen. If you’re a top prospect in the Yellowhammer State, for the most part, you end up at Auburn or Alabama. For a better portion of the 2018 recruiting cycle, Ross seemed like he’d end up at one or the other, as well.
It’s not to say he still won’t, but Auburn and Alabama appear to have some catching up to do.
Clemson has a serious chance to swipe Ross out from under the two in-state schools.
At his game on Friday, Clemson offensive coordinator Jeff Scott was in attendance, sending a clear message to Auburn he was willing to be within its city limits the night before Auburn faced off against Clemson. Auburn coaches, who can visit Ross at anytime given the proximity and only one game during the fall, decided not to go to the game.
The next day, Ross traveled to Clemson for his third unofficial visit. His first two trips to Clemson have been described by Ross as “two of the best visits he’s ever been on.”
On top of that, purely from a wide receiver’s perspective, Ross has seen more from Clemson’s offense than from Auburn and Alabama.
“Kelly Bryant plays like Deshaun to me. He’s a great quarterback. He’s a great thrower. I don’t see flaws really,” Ross told SEC Country. “They have shown me more [than Auburn and Alabama], that they can spread the ball around.”
It likely didn’t help Auburn’s cause, the way Saturday went.
Clemson Crystal Ball picks (including mine) have been flowing in for Ross the last couple days. For me at least, that has to do with the way he talks about Clemson compared to his other choices. He likes Auburn and Alabama, sure, but Ross lights up when he talks about the out-of-state Tigers.
His smile brightens up. When you’re listening to recordings of Ross, you can tell the moments when he’s smiling during his answers. It almost always coincides with Clemson questions.
Ross isn’t ready to narrow things down, but he’s getting there. And Clemson is here to stay.
“I don’t really have a top, but they’re going to be in the top,” Ross said.
What does Ross need to see from Auburn? The answers are similar for Auburn and Alabama. They need to open up the passing game more. They need to spread the ball to multiple different receivers. They need to win games through the air.
For Auburn, Ross’ relationship with Joey Gatewood will help. But unfortunately for the Tigers, Clemson will use top pocket-passer Trevor Lawrence for the same purpose.
“Really just the environment. I want so see what it’s like for a game since I’ve never been there for a game,” Ross said of Clemson. “They say it’s live over there. I want to see it for myself.
“Oh Trevor, we talk every now and then. He wants me to be his receiver up there. It’s hard to turn down,” Ross said.
Ross might not make it to Auburn for a game until Georgia week. By then, it’s likely the Tigers will be playing some major catch-up.

NO PRESSURE ON MILLER
Birmingham (Ala.) Jackson-Olin four-star defensive lineman Coynis Miller is not hiding that Florida is his leader despite being pursued by both Alabama and Auburn. He has a great connection with defensive line coach Chris Rumph and after visiting Florida over the summer, Miller said he compared each school and that Florida just looks the best to him right now. Expect this race to be very heated and for the in-state schools to turn up the pressure on him.
He is very familiar with Alabama and Auburn — both have him high on their boards, but he does not feel pressure to stay home.
“I will do my own thing. My family will let me go wherever I am most happy,” he said.
Florida has the edge now and all three SEC schools are expected to receive official visits. Miller at one time was close to committing late in the summer, but he has really slowed things down now and he may take his recruitment all the way to Signing Day.
You gotta think that Florida and Auburn's underwhelming performances so far have to raise Miller's eyebrows a little.

The 2018 class isn't what I was hoping for. But 2019 does look very promising in-state.

WILLIAMS HAS A FAVORITE
About nine months ago, Rivals 250 wide receiver Seth Williams was very close to committing to a school. Who was it going to be? Williams has not revealed that, but Florida State was the school talked about the most behind the scenes at that time. He decided to hold off on his commitment and he has not said much about his recruitment since.
Alabama and Auburn are both actively recruiting Williams, and at this time, it looks like it could come down to the two in-state schools. Williams visited both schools in July and he plans to take in games on each campus this fall. Since taking over as offensive coordinator for Alabama, Brian Daboll has been in pursuit. Auburn has been consistent and wide receivers coach Kodi Burns and offensive coordinator Chip Lindsey are both actively recruiting Williams. If there is a school trending right now, it looks to be Auburn. Williams has not scheduled any official visits yet, but he plans to start taking those in the middle of the season.

CLEMSON A PLAYER FOR ALABAMA'S BEST
Justyn Ross is a five-star wide receiver out of Phenix City (Ala.) Central. At one time he looked to be headed to Auburn, then Alabama was trending, but Clemson is the school with the momentum early in the 2017 season.
He was at Clemson on Saturday for the Auburn game, and Clemson had a couple of coaches at his game against Auburn (Ala.) on Friday. The Clemson staff has done an excellent job recruiting Ross and building that relationship with him. Under Jeff Scott, Clemson has been producing elite wide receivers and that is one thing that appeals to Ross. The campus environment does too.
Alabama and Auburn are not going to go away and Florida and Florida State are hanging around, but Clemson is trending here. Not many early on saw Ross leaving his home state to play college football, but his interest in Clemson is real.
