Making the Case: Patrick Surtain
quote:
With National Signing Day right around the corner, several of the nation’s top prospects are nearing final decisions in advance of officially signing their letters-of-intent on Wednesday.
Today, experts from the Rivals.com network examine where five-star Plantation (Fla.) American Heritage defensive back Patrick Surtain will end up playing his college football in advance of his Signing Day announcement. The candidates are Clemson, Alabama and LSU.
THE SITUATION
Surtain has been a fixture on the recruiting scene for three years now and over that time, he has taken several visits to college campuses across the country. But his recruitment really started to sort itself over the past month, as he took official visits to LSU, Alabama and Clemson. The tight-lipped Surtain hasn’t let much out about how the trips went or where he’s leaning, but speculation for months has been that he will end up at LSU.
Did Alabama or Clemson show enough on Surtain’s official visits to sway him away? We asked our team experts to state the case for their respective programs and let National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell issue a verdict.
CLEMSON
“Odds remain much greater in the favor of LSU and Alabama, who have been identified publicly as his frontrunners for a long time. If you're Clemson, you're holding out hope this unfold as it did for another south Florida corner two years ago when Trayvon Mullen stunned many by choosing Clemson over LSU and FSU on National Signing Day. Clemson owns a much thinner depth chart relative to the competition, and it had the chance to gain momentum with a late official visit last weekend. Probably a long shot, but the Tigers still have some shot.” – Paul Strelow, TigerIllustrated.com
ALABAMA
"Momentum seems to have shifted in Alabama’s favor for the nation’s top cornerback. The Crimson Tide loses its top six defensive backs from the national championship team. Coach Nick Saban has emphasized the need at the position and the immediate impact Surtain can make as a true freshman. Surtain is a must-get recruit for the Crimson Tide. Alabama appears on the verge of closing very strong. Surtain can be the icing on the cake." Andrew Bone, BamaInsider.com
LSU
"When it comes to five-star cornerback Patrick Surtain Jr., I believe that despite Alabama making things interesting late, LSU gets his signature on Signing Day. Tigers defensive backs coach Corey Raymond has been recruiting Surtain for multiple years, that relationship plus ties to Louisiana and the LSU-DBU thing finishes the deal." - Mike Scarbrough, TigerBait.com
THE VERDICT
“Surtain is a quiet kid and hard to read but the rumors regarding LSU have been there for so long that I have to think there’s something to it. Alabama has made a move but, he picks the Tigers in the end.” – Farrell

Rival Views: Which five-star defender could go No. 1 overall?
quote:
Rivals.com National Recruiting Director Mike Farrell and National Recruiting Analyst Adam Gorney don’t always see eye to eye. In this edition of Rival Views, the two debate which five-star on defense in this recruiting class could go No. 1 in the NFL Draft years from now.

FARRELL'S VIEW: EYABI ANOMA
It has to be a defensive end, right? We just debated who is the best pass rusher and I picked Xavier Thomas but when it comes to a player who is just scratching the surface of his potential and could make the biggest strides over three years, I’ll go with Eyabi Anoma. The pass rusher from Maryland could fill out to be 265 pounds or more and if he keeps his speed and first step, he will be a freak at the NFL Combine.
Thomas is a great player but I don’t think he has the length NFL scouts will want for a No. 1 overall pick so I’ll take Anoma over Adam Anderson and K.J. Henry.
GORNEY'S VIEW: MICAH PARSONS
Micah Parsons is such an incredibly versatile defensive player that he has the potential to be an absolute superstar at Penn State and emerge as a top NFL Draft pick in the coming years. He could start at inside linebacker for the Nittany Lions - not a bad place to be since it is Linebacker U - but my guess is that Parsons transitions to defensive end as his career continues.
The five-star from Harrisburg, Pa., can have an instant impact on defense and whether it's at linebacker or defensive end, Parsons is the type of player that will work his tail off to get on the field. His athleticism and aggressiveness are off the charts and his relentlessness will assure he's not on the sidelines for very long.
This is a really talented group of defensive ends especially up top with Clemson's Xavier Thomas and K.J. Henry, Alabama's Eyabi Anoma and Georgia's Adam Anderson. All of those players have a chance to be really special. But something tells me Parsons is going to be a star at Penn State and could emerge from this group as the best of the bunch.

DT Jacob Bandes back from visit to SEC power
quote:
Jacob Bandes took an unofficial visit to Alabama over the weekend and it’s a trip he won’t forget throughout his recruitment.
The 2019 four-star defensive tackle from Pittsburg, Calif., had an excellent time, made a lot of memories and is hopeful the Crimson Tide continue to come after him.
“I had many standouts on my visit,” Bandes said.
“For example, I had the wearing of the jersey, I had a lot of bonding with my dad, I got to meet coach (Tosh) Lupoi and see coach (Nick) Saban in person.
“Coach Lupoi really likes me and likes my film and the defensive line coach Karl Dunbar, he likes me as well and my film.”
So far, the 6-foot-3, 285-pound four-star standout has landed offers from Colorado, Oregon, Oregon State, San Jose State, UCLA, Utah and Washington.
An offer was not discussed during Bandes’ visit to Tuscaloosa but he’s hopeful things continue to move forward with the Alabama staff.
“They did not talk about an offer,” Bandes said. “Coach Lupoi said he was going to evaluate more on me and just go on from there.”
As for other trips, the Northern California prospect is heading to Washington soon. If the family drives up, stops at Oregon and Oregon State are possible. If Bandes flies, then he’ll just see the Huskies on this visit.

So it seems like Patrick Surtain is heading to L5U. Its ok, they will be a mediocre program for the next few years

Was there really bad weather in Tuscaloosa yesterday or something?
Jeff Banks was unable to visit Brock Purdy as planned. He is visiting him today instead.

ESPN: One instant-impact freshman for every Top 25 team
I'm guessing this is ESPN's pre-season ranking they are using because Clemson is #1.
quote:
2. Alabama: Christian Barmore and Stephon Wynn, DL
ESPN: "The Crimson Tide are losing several defensive linemen (Joshua Frazier, Da'Ron Payne, Da'Shawn Hand) so that opens things up for incoming freshmen such as Barmore and Wynn."

Trevor Lawrence reminds me a lot of Jacob Eason tbh. Very stiff in the Pocket. Don't think that big arm will save him

Surtain was always a LSU Tiger.
Nothing to see here.

I need this mentality for our basketball team. Expect the worse, and any good that comes will be 10x better

Karl Dunbar had issues traveling to Huntsville yesterday to see Malik Langham, but they did Skype each other. A source says Florida, not Auburn, is our main competition for him.
So we have guys traveling all over the country and Ol Karl can't get on the interstate to Huntsville

Huntsville must be in a cul de sac. Dang. Lol

Have seen this speculated before. Are you speculating or you know? Who else is silent?
Only one I was told about, of course, I was asking specifically about him and his AU offer. Source is known by everyone who follows Alabama recruiting.

It has been working for me this year. Started it for the Sugar Bowl then the NGC. I'm hoping it will continue.

There's a rumor going around that Quay Walker told Saban during his in-home visit that he wasn't coming.
