Roundtable: The toughest 5-star omissions

quote:

The final Top247 for the class of 2018 has been unveiled. Among the major storylines — three quarterbacks dot the top-6, and a plethora of elite defensive ends litter the top-10 — is the fact that 15 new players have earned a fifth star in the final rankings.

To get to that 15, we had to make some tough calls and leave worthy recruits out. In that light, we've asked a few members of our rankings council to name a four-star player they either stumped for to earn that extra star or one who they at least thought had a compelling case.

Olaijah Griffin, four-star cornerback (33)

Griffin was easily among the most impactful players out West this year as not only a shut down corner but a big-play threat as a receiver and return man. Griffin has always been good, but he played with an edge and emotion in his game we haven't ever seen before. He flashed both short-area quickness and the top-end speed to run with the fastest receivers, showed physicality in press coverage and in the run game and was dynamic anytime he had the ball in his hands. He has very good instincts and ball awareness, doesn't need to get grabby with his hands and doesn't panic when the ball is in the air. He has long arms and looks like he could have another growth spurt in him and is not close to peaking from a physical standpoint. USC and Tennessee lead Oregon, Alabama and UCLA. - Greg Biggins

Isaac Taylor-Stuart, four-star cornerback (35)

The hardest guy to leave out of the five-star tier to me was the 6-foot-2 cornerback with 4.3 speed. I'll credit Luke Stampini for bringing this comparison up, but Steelers defensive back Artie Burns makes a lot of sense as a comp. Burns was a big track athlete that didn't always show up as much as you'd like in a camp or a game, but his raw athleticism was undeniable and he ended up being a first-round pick. Isaac Taylor-Stuart has that kind of size and athleticism. His highlight film also pops the way you want five-star film to pop. Ultimately though, in a year with a lot of worthy candidates, we opted for a couple of guys that we feel are just better football players than Taylor-Stuart – guys that are more consistent in game settings, even though he's a guy that has an incredibly high ceiling. I won't be surprised at all if Taylor-Stuart is a first round draft pick at either safety or as a zone corner. - Barton Simmons

Christian Barmore, four-star defensive tackle (215)

This pick for a five-star comes outside the box without a doubt, given the how little we have seen of the prospect. However, the film on the Philadelphia product shows an explosive defensive lineman with great athleticism. Barmore is quick off the ball, athletic when changing directions, and looks to be a real disruptive force up front. Barmore is listed at 6-foot-5, 290-pounds, and that big frame looks as if it could pack on several more pounds as he continues to develop. When you combine that length, size, and athleticism, there is potential to be a first-round draft pick. It’s easy to see why Barmore, a former Temple commit, saw his recruitment explode this past fall as senior film leaked out after he missed his sophomore and junior seasons. Unfortunately, we were never able to see Barmore face other elite linemen in any camp or all-America game settings to see how he stacked up against other elite prospects. The lack of a top-end tests makes it understandable for there to be hesitation for such a large bump to his ranking. - Luke Stampini

So he was in discussion for a 5th star, yet they ranked him at #215 overall?

247 went from being truthful with their rankings to giving everyone five stars just because. I wanted Kaho and Walker but they weren't the rave at those all star games. You usually have to really show it to get that fifth star smh.

Walker got tons of praise for what he did leading up to the all star game?

And that's really hard to do as a LB in drills like that. Flashed as a rusher and in coverage.

Seven from Alabama make 247Sports' final Top247 for 2018

quote:

The state of Alabama featured movement in the final Top247 rankings in the class of 2018, released Thursday afternoon by the network. It begins at the top, as Mobile (Ala.) St. Paul's Episcopal cornerback and U.S. Army All-American Jalyn Armour-Davis ascends to the top spot in the Yellowhammer State, checking in at No. 70 overall. He was previously listed just inside the top 100 at No. 96. Armour-Davis, who signed with Alabama in December, checks in as the No. 8 cornerback in the class.

A half-dozen other prospects from the state made the final Top247, up from five total in the previous update.

No. 100 overall Coynis Miller (was previously 124), Auburn verbal commitment

Quick Take: Miller's projection is why he moved up the rankings as few interior defensive linemen in the class flash like the blue-chip Auburn pledge. He is among the quickest and most explosive interior talents in the entire class and can be dominant at times. Once he hits a college weight room and gains consistency in the effort and motor department, Miller could become a problem for opposing offenses.

No. 101 Justyn Ross (previously 154), considering Alabama, Auburn and Clemson down the stretch.

Quick Take: Ross, the top recruit per the 247Sports Composite, put together a great senior season and held his own during the all-star circuit. When healthy, there aren't many pass-catchers with his combination of size, polish and play-making ability. Ross, once he focuses solely on football, will fill out his frame and come closer to rounding out his game at the next level.

No. 133 Harold Joiner (75), committed to Auburn

Quick Take: The versatile offensive weapon can play running back or flex out as an H-back or tight end at the next level, which paired with a great frame, speed and ball skills, made him the top 247Sports recruit in the state before this update. Joiner's running back skills, specifically, point to plenty of upside but his position at the next level will have a lot to do with how his college career goes. He's intriguing as it gets.

No. 221 Tank Jenkins (UR), considering Oklahoma, Ole Miss, Louisville, UCLA

Quick Take: Sliding into the Top247 to close out the process, Jenkins was relentless as a senior and during Alabama-Mississippi All-Star week. His stock rose with college programs late in the cycle as he's embraced playing inside on the next level with better than expected quickness and striking ability in short spaces. As Jenkins trims up, his value will increase.

No. 222 Malik Langham (UR), considering Alabama, Tennessee, Notre Dame, Florida, Vanderbilt

Quick Take: The hottest defensive recruit in the state following a banner senior season, Langham is the ceiling selection within the group. His is a legit 6-foot-6, 260 pounds, but many are curious about how he will look physically once he stops playing basketball. Could he move inside? Is he a strongside defensive end? Either way, Langham is long and athletic with a high motor and it's part of the reason his recruitment has taken off of late.

No. 236 Seth Williams (227), signed with Auburn

Quick Take: Williams has become a steady performer over the last 18 months or so with great size and hands on the outside. He has come a long way with his route-running and ability to set up defenders while long showcasing sheer play-making ability after the catch. Williams is a state champion basketball player and holds his own as a defensive football player as well.

I still have no idea how Harold Joiner is ranked ahead of Asa Martin

Also was surprised Tank Jenkins got such a bump. Guess he impressed enough at AL/MS All Star Game

Following the winter all-star circuit, 247Sports has released its final Top247 recruiting rankings for the class of 2018. Below, we’re breaking down how the running backs finished in the Top247 — who rose, who fell, even who dropped out.

The 5-star

Laurinburg (N.C.) Scotland County running back Zamir White (No. 13 overall) was the lone five-star for his position group in 2018. The 6-foot, 220-pound back has been considered the premeir ball carrier in the 2018 class for much of the recruiting cycle. As a senior, White rushed for 2,086 yards and 34 touchdowns on only 148 carries. In November, White suffered a torn ACL, which ended his high school career. However, the Georgia signee that is already enrolled in classes is expected back at full-strength sometime during fall camp.

Top247 overview: How the 2018 pass-catchers stack up

quote:

Following the winter all-star circuit, 247Sports has released its final Top247 recruiting rankings for the class of 2018. Below, we’re breaking down how the receivers/tight ends finished in the Top247 — who rose, who fell, even who dropped out.

The 5-stars

Justin Shorter (7), Amon-Ra St. Brown (10), Jordyn Adams (14), tight end Jeremy Ruckert (18), JaMarr Chase (19), Terrace Marshall (20) and Derion Kendrick (30) give us seven five-star receivers and tight ends in the 2018 class.

Shorter, a Penn State signee, is the highest rated receiver in the class with a rating of 99. His size, speed, ball skills and ability to separate allowed him to separate from other receivers in the class.

The next collection of five-stars are all rated 98, and it is starts with St. Brown, a USC commit. He is quick off the line of scrimmage and explodes out of his breaks.

Adams, who signed with North Carolina, has strong hands and great instincts to go with plus route-running ability while being agile.

Ruckert, the top tight end in the nation and an Ohio State signee, is a down-the-field threat who will create mismatches all over the field because of his size, speed and ball skills.

Chase, the final of our receivers with a 98 rating, made visits to Michigan, TCU and LSU and has one to Auburn this weekend. He has speed to stretch the field and the frame to make it hard for defensive backs to be physical against him.

Marshall signed with LSU, and he gives the Tigers a receiver with big-play ability, size and some elusiveness after the catch.

Kendrick is the final five-star receiver. The Clemson signee is explosive and athletic, and he possesses very good ball skills.

Who Rose

Derion Kendrick, a receiver who signed with Clemson, moved from No. 73 to five-star status at No. 30.

Receiver Justyn Ross, who made a visit to Clemson and has trips to Alabama and Auburn coming up, rose from No. 154 to No. 101.

Tight end Brevin Jordan, a Miami signee, moved from No. 106 to No. 72.

Receiver Brian Hightower, who signed with Miami, jumped from No. 231 to No. 169.

Receiver Malik Heath, a Mississippi State signee, rose from No. 229 to No. 176.

Who Fell

Penn State tight end signee Zack Kuntz dropped from No. 53 to No. 111.

Michigan tight end signee Mustapha Muhammad fell from No. 155 to No. 227.

New Additions

Receiver Jordan Young, who just made a trip to Tennessee, moved into the Top247 at No. 190.

Receiver and Ohio State signee Cameron Brown moved into the Top247 at No. 224.

Dropped Out

Receiver Jalen Hall, who was at No. 164, is no longer in the Top247. He officially visited Nebraska and Oregon in November and Georgia last week and will be at Florida State this weekend.

Receiver D'Marcus Adams dropped from No. 171 to out of the Top247. He is committed to Florida State.
