Tagovailoa bumps up his official visit

Alabama 5-star quarterback commit Tua Tagovailoa was expected to fly from Honolulu to Alabama on Dec. 8, but he bumped up his official visit. His visit started on Sunday and will end on Tuesday. Now, I know some fans are going to be concerned about this as it presents some free time at the end of this weekend to visit somewhere else, but there’s nothing to worry about.

He moved up his visit so he can attend his team banquet this weekend. He and his family felt it was important to be with his teammates this weekend coming off a state championship and being the state’s all-time leader in passing yards now.

Just in case you missed it, his father, Galu, told SEC Country that his son will not visit any other schools and remains 100 percent committed to Alabama. Tagovailoa will enroll in school this January.

Leatherwood visits Georgia

Another one of Alabama’s recruits that fans have grown worrisome over is 5-star offensive tackle Alex Leatherwood. The concern stems from Leatherwood’s desire to visit other schools and his frequent tweets about other teams; however, there’s really nothing to worry about when it comes to his commitment.

Leatherwood was in Athens this weekend, but he found time to visit Atlanta on Saturday to see Alabama roll over Florida, 54-16, in the SEC Championship Game, which was confirmed by SEC Country. After the win, Leatherwood went back to Athens to finish his official visit.

Like Tagovailoa, Leatherwood is 100 percent committed to Alabama. The only way I could see him flipping his commitment is if offensive line coach Mario Cristobal leaves for another job. The nation’s No. 2 offensive tackle is extremely close to Cristobal.

Dean sets visits elsewhere

Jhavonte Dean, a 3-star Alabama cornerback commit from Blinn College (Brenham, Texas), has set official visits to Arizona State on Dec. 9 and Miami on Jan. 13, he told SEC Country. He still has not set an official visit to Alabama and hasn’t visited Tuscaloosa since committing to the Tide in July.

I do not expect Dean to end up in Alabama’s Class of 2017 as of now. He hasn’t been a priority to the Tide staff for a while now. I think Miami is a logical landing spot for him because he is from South Florida.

Why is Alabama not making sure Dean stays committed? Could it be because the staff feels confident in being able to flip 5-star Ohio State cornerback commit Shaun Wade? Possibly. Alabama likes where it stands with Wade. But if the Tide don’t land his commitment, 4-star cornerback Tariq Castro-Fields is a likely candidate to be in this class. He visited for the Iron Bowl.

Big Cat visiting Alabama this weekend

Per our Georgia recruiting reporter Jeff Sentell over at DawgNation.com, 4-star defensive end/linebacker Markaviest “Big Cat” Bryant will take an official visit to Alabama this weekend.

Bryant was being recruited as a JACK linebacker as of my last communication with him. That’s the same position as new commit Chris Allen and major 4-star target Jarez Parks. I don’t think Bryant will be in Alabama’s class, but if the Tide’s plans have changed and they want him primarily on the defensive line, he would be one to watch moving forward. But, I think Georgia holds a comfortable lead for his services.

Not likely, but not impossible either.

Not really related to Alabama recruiting, but Nebraska is killing it for California WRs in this class.

They have historically done pretty well in Cali, and they have a west coast guy there now running things. They got Keyshawn's son and he has been pretty vocal if I recall.

That is also giving them a shot with Holmes, the great corner out of Cali

They just got multiple CBs for the #1 WR in the country, Joseph Lewis, and for another high 4-star from Cali.

Bragging rights are on the line this week as the 2016 Alabama-Mississippi All-Star Game week is set to get underway in Montgomery, Ala.

The game will not take place until Saturday, Dec. 10, but players on both rosters will arrive on Monday to begin preparations.

To nobody’s surprise, a number of Alabama targets will be in attendance at the event.

Here, BamaOnLine looks at the storylines for Crimson Tide fans to follow.

-- What’s the latest with four-star receiver Henry Ruggs III? The Montgomery (Ala.) Lee product visited Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl, but has been keeping a low profile since delaying a scheduled commitment on Aug. 1. Alabama, Auburn, Florida and Florida State are all battling for the U.S. Army All-American. Tide receivers coach Billy Napier visited Ruggs last week.

-- When will four-star defensive end LaBryan Ray make a decision? Ray, who has gone as far as naming six programs standing out, has no clear timetable for a commitment. The Madison (Ala.) James Clemens standout has visited Alabama multiple times this season, and is trending to the Tide at 100 percent on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. Alabama and Tennessee appear to be the two frontrunners as it stands. Ray’s teammate, three-star cornerback Kyriq McDonald, has already joined the Tide’s 2017 class.

-- Is it still Michigan, Alabama and Georgia for four-star wideout Nico Collins of Pinson (Ala.) Clay-Chalkville? The one-time presumptive Bama lock began trending to the Wolverines after a visit last summer, but has yet to make a commitment. Alabama visited Collins last week after he unofficially visited T-Town for the Iron Bowl.

-- Alabama’s in-state group of commits – Markail Benton, Brian Robinson, Kendall Randolph, Chadarius Townsend and Kyriq McDonald – all appear to be firm with their commitments. Townsend officially visited Mississippi State over the weekend; Randolph said visiting Florida was a possibility in a recent interview. Where do their commitments stand with the Tide?

-- Alabama needs defensive linemen in its 2017 class. Mobile product Ryan Johnson has long been a name Bama fans have been familiar with. The four-star defender visited Tuscaloosa for the Iron Bowl last week, as well as the Kentucky game in October. Last time BOL spoke with Johnson, he said the Tide took a big step forward for him. Auburn, however, appears to be the favorite.

-- Any shot with five-star running back Cam Akers? It’s sounds like the ship may have sailed on the one-time Bama commit from Clinton (Miss.). A source close to Akers told BOL on Monday that the Tide hasn’t reached out in a while, however, the source did say it would be welcomed if Bama gets back in contact with the family. Alabama has a loaded running backs class with five-star Najee Harris and four-star Brian Robinson. For a while it was expected that Alabama would take a third back in the class, however, with limited space remaining that no longer may be the case.

-- LSU commit Justin Thomas, an Alabama legacy, will be up from Spanish Fort for the week. The three-star defensive end has been on the Tide’s radar for quite some time. It’s not clear how Les Miles’ firing has impacted the strength of his commitment.

Do you see them as a future threat to tOSU in the B1G?

Keep an eye on Terence Dunlap, RB from Maplesville, in that All Star game. He's only rated a 2 star but he's the best high school RB I've seen in person. He won the state championship MVP the last 3 years and has a few offers from Nebraska and some others smaller schools. Rutgers just started looking at him too. It'll be interesting to see how he does against better competition since he played in 1A but he's did well against some 3A-5A schools too. Could be a hidden gem for some school.

I don't see them as a real threat probably because they aren't the immediate threat? Michigan is back. PSU is basically back. Those are 2 other top 15 programs who are recruiting well now and bringing talent in. PSU just flipped a DT from Florida, is probably getting the 5* out of IMG at DE and just got a top 100 guy at QB for 2018. Those are 3 positions where if you got that, you got a chance

What classification are they? I didn't even know the had their own team. I thought those kids went to a different school in the area.

I've been there with my son's baseball team playing in tournaments and they've got good youth/travel baseball facilities, but I've not seen the HS before.

Prospect on the Rise

Monty Rice

The more you watch Madison (Ala.) James Clemens linebacker Monty Rice, the more you like him. He has great size (6-2, 230 pounds), he is a real thumper at linebacker, he has good instincts, and he can move laterally better than some expect. He is down to Auburn, Georgia and LSU with a decision coming Tuesday December 12. Rice is an early enrollee, so whatever school he choose, he will be on campus early in January. Rice will move in the Scout 300 in the near future. He is currently the No. 18 inside linebacker, but will likely end up inside the top 10. After evaluating him live, and on film this fall, he is a linebacker Scout really likes.

OSU has been going into Florida for more than a decade. The movement into Georgia and Texas is probably the last 5 years. OSU needs to find a niche area where they can find nose tackles. They grow like trees in the south and everyone in the ACC/SEC wants them

I wish Bama could find a spot for Rice. Bama is very thin at ILB right now.
