Gibbs still highly interested in Alabama

DeAngelo Gibbs is wanted from schools coast to coast, and that’s not more apparent when he says how many unread text messages he has in his phone.

Gibbs, the nation’s No. 3 safety from Grayson (Ga.) High School, told SEC Country that there are several schools that text him at least twice every single day, but the amount of messages he receives is too much to maintain.

“If you saw my phone, you wouldn’t believe it,” Gibbs said. “Some schools are hitting me up twice every single day. It shows how much these schools want me. Alabama, Auburn, Georgia, Tennessee, LSU, Florida State, Clemson all hit me up multiple times. You wouldn’t believe it, but it’s crazy; I have 3,000 unread text messages.”

Yes, you read that correctly. Three-thousand unread messages from coaches around the country. Could that mean that he already knows where he’s going to school? No, not at all. Gibbs is just one of those recruits that is taking his recruitment very slowly.

He has no official visits set up just yet but did say that Alabama, LSU, Ohio State, Miami and Southern California are the front-runners for those five coveted trips. Georgia and Tennessee, the presumptive favorites, are likely not going to get an official visit because of how many times he’s already paid his own way to get to those schools. He will be at the Tennessee-Georgia game next month — in an unofficial capacity.

Those two schools are considered the schools to beat at the moment because of his connections to the programs. Gibbs’ cousin, J.R. Reed, transferred to Georgia this summer and another cousin, freshman Nigel Warrior, is at Tennessee. His uncle and Warrior’s father, Dale Carter, was a Volunteers legend.

With that being said, all of the schools Gibbs is considering are on an equal level, or so he says. The Under Armour All-American is very polished when answering questions from reporters, so you’re likely not going to get anything too revealing from him.

But he did say which school he has been most impressed with so far this season, and it is good news for the Crimson Tide.

“Alabama has really shown why they are the No. 1 team in the country,” Gibbs said. “A lot of teams have started off well, but Alabama has been dominant.”

The 6-foot-2, 204-pound prospect hears from both defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt and defensive backs coach Derrick Ansley daily. They’re two of the coaches who may have some unread messages in Gibbs’ phone. Though he may not actually click on their messages, he sees what they’re saying to him.

“We need you here. We have to get you on campus. We just have to have you on this team,” Gibbs said of Alabama’s typical recruiting pitch. “I believe I could help them. I think it would be a really good opportunity for me if they don’t have many safeties on the roster.”

Alabama doesn’t have a true safety committed in the Class of 2017, although 3-star defensive back Kyriq McDonald could play the position at the next level.

Gibbs visited Alabama multiple times this summer, and his interest in the Tide is legit.

“We’re on a great page,” Gibbs said. “It’s Alabama. I mean, who doesn’t like to win? Everybody takes note of ‘Bama. They have a great program. They have great history, and, like I said, it’s Alabama.”

Gibbs won’t be making a commitment anytime soon. He’ll announce his college decision at the Under Armour All-American game on New Year’s Day.

South Carolina commit reacts to Alabama offer

Alabama lost a defensive line commitment on Sunday in 3-star Aaron Sterling. Just a day later, defensive line coach Karl Dunbar had his eyes set on a possible replacement.

The Tide extended an offer to South Carolina commitment Javon Kinlaw, a Class of 2017 junior college prospect.

Kinlaw, who attends Jones Community College, told SEC Country’s South Carolina recruiting reporter, Hale McGranahan, that while he does appreciate the offer from Alabama, he is solid with South Carolina.

“They offered me in high school, so it’s a bold statement from them,” Kinlaw said, “But I’m still 100 percent a Gamecock.”

The 6-foot-5, 276-pound prospect has been committed to South Carolina since December and has not wavered on his commitment to the Gamecocks, as evidenced by his comment on the offer.

If Kinlaw decides to take a visit to Tuscaloosa, then it’s possible the interest level in Alabama raises and causes him to rethink his commitment. For now, Alabama and Kinlaw are in the very early stages of building a relationship.

Once again, Alabama’s main defensive line targets in this class are 4-star prospects Aubrey Solomon, LaBryan Ray, Ryan Johnson, Isaiah Buggs, Phidarian Mathis, Elijah Conliffe and Tyler Shelvin.

The last time 4-star Amite (La.) wide receiver Devonta Smith spoke with members of the LSU staff was to inform them he was delaying his decision until National Signing Day.

Then, the LSU coaches displayed respect for Smith’s decision, but apparently forgot to remain in touch with the highly regarded 2017 target.

That lack of communication over the past month between the in-state power and the No. 1 prospect in Louisiana is not to say that the interest has wavered. It might be a bit of a head scratcher one month after the Tigers were named one of three finalists, but there’s a sense that LSU’s efforts since the spring went largely unnoticed.

Smith was made aware that he was the No. 1 prospect on LSU’s wish list in 2017 and was made a priority for first-year wide receivers coach Dameyune Craig. The 4-star receiver was on hand for LSU’s recruiting barbecue in July but declined multiple attempts by the coaching staff to visit with his family, a source told SEC Country.

Smith’s mother, grandfather and brother were all invited to campus to visit with the LSU coaches, take in the atmosphere and discuss the receiver’s future. That meeting never transpired.

“If they can’t get his mother on campus, where does that leave them,” a source said of LSU’s chances of landing Smith.

Smith, Louisiana’s top-ranked receiver, has not heard much from LSU since postponing his commitment in August. The LSU coaches lack confidence in their ability to edge out presumptive favorite Alabama for the coveted prospect, which is why the staff has put its focus elsewhere.

A break in communication

On Smith’s side, the 4-star prospect elevated LSU to one of his final three schools along with Alabama and Miami. The lack of communication since has been a mystery.

“He put them (LSU) in his top 3. He has a great relationship with coach Craig and coach (Ed) Orgeron,” a source told SEC Country. “He’s begging them to recruit him, but they don’t do anything.”

As it stands now, this does not signal the end of LSU’s chances of landing the nation’s 10th-ranked receiver.

Smith hasn’t taken the coaching staff’s silence personally. In fact, he’s been very understanding of the situation. However, it remains a question whether this will hurt LSU’s chances down the road when Smith prepares to make his announcement on signing day.

“He takes it as … maybe it’s the season, maybe they’ve got something to do,” a source said. “Things happen and they might be dealing with something that he doesn’t know about it.”

The 6-foot-1, 160-pound wide receiver has since visited Tuscaloosa, Ala., for Alabama’s home opener against Western Kentucky. There are little to no indications Smith will be on hand at any LSU home games and he has already confirmed to SEC Country that he does not plan on making an official visit to LSU this fall.

That, of course, could change as Smith has plans to officially visit Notre Dame, Miami, Southern California and Nebraska. Ohio State is in contention for the fifth-and-final visit, but that remains uncertain at this time.

Smith was considered the top priority for Craig and area recruiter Ed Orgeron dating back to the spring, but he has also received consistent communication from the Alabama staff since de-committing from Georgia last year. Though the 4-star wide receiver has denied that the Crimson Tide are his leading school and insisted that all of the schools recruiting him are on a level playing field.

Sources close to the situation consider Alabama as the school to beat, which was made apparent by the level of support it lent when Tangipahoa Parish suffered severe flooding last month.

A skinny here: LSU is at risk of losing the state’s top-ranked prospect to a division rival, but its efforts cannot be ignored. The Tigers’ staff is becoming aware of the situation and may be on the verge of trying to reconcile the situation, if there is room for reparations.

Barring the NCAA slapping OM hard, he IS heading there (Ole Miss). If they get hit hard enough for him to decide it best to go elsewhere, and we just happen to lose Najee Harris (please no), we suddenly jump to the top of the list. Big IFs, and probably both not going to happen, as Harris looks very solid right now. If the NCAA hits them hard, you have a decent shot. If not, your chances of signing him are VERY small.

That is the word in the booster circle, which I put more stock in than what a random national recruiting guy says. Especially when it has to do with recruiting in the state of MS. He's Saban's #1 personal pet recruiting project this year, but we're certainly not going to sign him unless Harris goes elsewhere.

There are rumors that Dobbins would walk if OSU got Akers as well, so that could play into the chess game going on and everyone hearing the right things.

i know you were interested in Okudah and his OU interest. Rumor is he told an OU insider on Sunday morning he was committed to OSU, and then some OSU insider on 11w said he committed to the staff on May 22, the same day an 11w insider put in a CB prediction for him to OSU (seems like more than happenstance). Just hasn't made it public yet and probably won't until around his official visit (for the Michigan game)

Austin Troxell tore his ACL again on Friday. Same knee as last year too. Sucks for the kid. Wish him a speedy recovery.

1) Devonta Smith --- Already committed, simply trying to lessen the LA backlash
2) Conliffe ---- expecting him to go public when he visits for the Kentucky game
3) Wills --- was told he spoke to Kentucky coaches and let them know he was Bama bound, but this one is one I don't feel too sure about
4) Akers may end up committing to OM, but very doubtful by NSD that their class stays together due to the NCAA
5) With USC flopping, keep an eye open for Joseph Lewis, not saying he's coming by any stretch, just keep him on your radar.

To be fair, they looked like middle schoolers. He wouldn't have done it in that fashion against 7A Alabama HS teams.

Rodney Orr confirmed that Kinlaw is blowing up today, and is probably the #1 DL recruit in the country. His actual size now is 6'6" and between 310-325.

Hate to just barge into your recruiting thread here fellas but had a quick question.

What's the word on Adonis Thomas? I'm guessing he left bc of being buried on that stacked linebacker depth chart right? How was he looking in practices and stuff?

Just asking bc we need linebackers like our life depends on it and i would be glad to take a processed Bama kid.

Word was that he didn't impress our new DC and was strongly urged that he wasn't going to fit into the plans at UA.

Who is "we"? UMRealist... Michigan? Mississippi? Michigan should be pretty solid at LB. So... Ole Miss?

The book on him from those close to Pruitt was... can't play dead in a "B" Western. I'm not saying that to irritate a fan of another team. Just being completely honest. That doesn't mean that a change in system/environment might not could help him develop, but.. it wasn't just that we have good LBs. It was that he had shown no signs of life as having potential in our program.

Wait.. he's a Bama fan? I honestly didn't know.

But now I'm confused. There was a little concern about the young LBs back before Wilson and Davis arrived, but they've looked very promising in practice. Gary Johnson, provided we can hold him, is the best LB prospect in the country. Holcombe has promise. SDH and Evans will still be here. Terrell Hall may be the most impressive of all (if he doesn't outgrow Jack). Christian Miller. And with the guys we'll sign, it's looking pretty good.
