Hearing McMillan nor Thomas has impressed Jeremy Pruitt. Both may be looking for a new home sometime soon.

Wow, they really screwed over Bell. Should have just told him straight up he wasn't going to play here and let him sign elsewhere back on NSD 2015.

The younger Jones brothers didn't work out too well, but Barrett was good enough to burn scholarships on the other two.

Can't believe they didn't let Thomas commit. Is the staff sure that Shavers will enroll and not go the MLB route.

Smart and Pruitt must evaluate players differently.

Pruitt seems like he is cleaning house if these reports are true.

Pruitt is much less of a yes man than Kirby was, for better or worse. Saban has a ton of respect for him. He's a GREAT talent evaluator.

Does anyone know what the deal was with Hill? Anytime someone asks on BOL the mods zap that shite with the quickness.

I know some stuff and all I feel comfortable saying is that Hill had some things that he needed to deal with.

Update on BOL says that we are very much in the mix for Anthony McFarland Jr. I think Alabama jumped the gun on his recruitment a bit when we named the main street in Tuscaloosa after him.

I'm not sure that this was all of what was going on with him, but I know depression was a huge issue.

Stone Mountain (Ga.) Stephenson’s Aaron Sterling, a 2017 three-star defensive end, committed to Alabama on Christmas morning last December.

Since then, the 6-foot-2, 260-pounder has kept his recruitment open, but also his commitment firm.

The Peach State prospect visited Tuscaloosa last Monday for the second time this year.

“The trip was good,” Sterling told BamaOnLine. “I got to chill out with the coaches, met a couple of the players and did the little camp with the little kids. I did some individual drill workouts. I got to talk to Coach (Nick) Saban. That’s about it.”

Outside linebackers coach Tosh Lupoi is Sterling’s primary recruiter. The three-star end got to spend time with both he and new defensive line coach Karl Dunbar.

“I worked out with both of them,” Sterling said. “[Dunbar is] a good coach, a good dude. I got to know about his family and his career in the NFL.”

Early playing time is one of the top recruiting pitches Alabama is conveying to Sterling.

“They were just telling me how the depth chart for my position is going to be low for next year with all the people going to the draft,” Sterling said. “So they were just telling me I have a high chance of playing as soon as I get there.

“They want me at outside linebacker but they can use me to play in certain third down situations where they might put me at end, outside linebacker or move me over a guard that’s not really that good.”

Sterling and Saban continue to build a relationship, something that is coming along nicely.

“It’s progressing pretty good,” Sterling said. “I’m getting more comfortable with him going and talking with him in his office. It’s pretty good. He was just telling me how Alabama can help me beyond football and in the future, how their name holds a lot of weight.”

Three schools immediately come to mind for Sterling when asked which other programs were making the biggest push to flip him.

“Georgia, South Carolina, Tennessee and there’s a couple other schools,” he said.

Sterling says other programs have nothing bad to say about the Crimson Tide.

“There’s no negative recruiting,” he said. “They don’t talk about Alabama. They’ll say like Alabama is a good program; they’re just trying their best to get me to decommit. They don’t down Alabama. They give Alabama its props or its praise.”

The three-star defender reaffirmed his commitment status with UA.

“I’m 100 percent committed,” Sterling said.

Sterling doesn’t know when he’ll return to Alabama, and plans to take all five official visits this fall. He listed a few schools that are currently trailing the Tide that’s he’s interested in.

“There’s no order but it’s probably Tennessee, South Carolina or Georgia,” Sterling said. “I know I’m going to be in the SEC.”

Sterling is rated the No. 15 strong-side defensive end and the No. 386 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite.

He supposedly got sick, which led to weight loss, which led to a slide down the depth chart, which led to a worse bout of depression (which he was already dealing with), I wish him a speedy recovery from his issues......mental illness is no joke.

I am happy for Bennett, had he been in the state like Davis last cycle, it likely would've been a lot better shot for Bama, but at ST Aquinas it's a lot tougher and Biscuit let his son make the decision himself, best of luck to the kid

I'll keep my thoughts on all the transfer rumors to myself

Alabama already has three, 4-star linebacker commits in the Class of 2017: VanDarius Cowan, Markail Benton and Gary Johnson. The Crimson Tide are not done at the position group, and have turned up the heat on one of their targets.

Tyler Taylor, a 4-star prospect from Lanier High School (Sugar Hill, Ga.), told SEC Country that right after Benton committed two weeks ago, Alabama has picked up its recruitment of him.

“I feel like they are pushing more now,” Taylor said. “They are trying to get the No. 1 linebacker recruiting class.”

The 6-foot-1, 213-pound prospect likes the fact that the Crimson Tide are considering him for a spot in that top class. Taylor doesn’t mind that he’ll have to compete alongside some of the best players in the country for a prime spot on the depth chart.

“Anywhere that you are going to choose, you’re going to have to compete,” Taylor said. “Especially with the ball that I’m trying to play, you’re going to have to work.”

Taylor named Alabama, Georgia, Auburn, Tennessee and Oklahoma as the schools recruiting him the hardest at the moment. He said if he had to choose one school out of that group that was pushing for his signature the hardest, it would be the Sooners.

The nation’s No. 11 inside linebacker said he speaks to members of the Sooners’ staff once every two days. The other schools reach out at least once a week.

Alabama still has plenty of linebacker targets on its board: 5-stars Dylan Moses and Baron Browning lead the way with 4-stars Nate McBride, Robert Beal and Christopher Allen rounding out the group.

Even with all of the top talent still being considered by the Crimson Tide, Taylor has been assured that if he wanted to join Alabama, he would be allowed to.

“I asked all of my top schools about a month ago if I would commit right now if they’d accept my commitment just to see what they would say,” Taylor said. “All of the schools said they would accept my commitment.”

His mother will have a big say in his decision. At this time, only four schools have really made her a priority. Georgia, Oklahoma, Oklahoma State and Tennessee have made sure they talk to his mother as much as they talk to him.

Alabama does not communicate much with her, but he’d like them to start.

If the Crimson Tide staff want him in this class, that may be the key.

Alabama’s motto for this year’s recruiting class was created shortly after VanDarius Cowan, a 4-star linebacker commit from Palm Beach Gardens (Fla.) High School, was listening to rapper OG Maco.

Cowan was listening to the song “Undefeated,” and right after he finished hearing it, he took to Twitter to reveal a motto that has taken off since then.

“It just came to me right then that savages want to play with savages,” Cowan told SEC Country. “When you look at the people that are going to Alabama, who’s not a savage? Alex Leatherwood — savage. Markail Benton — savage. We’re all trying to ball.”

“Savages want to play with savages” is best described by Leatherwood, a 5-star Alabama offensive tackle commit. Both Cowan and Leatherwood have been the most vocal recruiters for the Crimson Tide.

“Iron sharpens iron. That’s what it means,” Leatherwood told SEC Country. “If you want to be the best, you need to be with the best. You need to practice hard each and every day with good competition.”

Cowan did not feel like he had that level of competition when he was committed to Florida State. He de-committed from the Seminoles twice, which has made some Crimson Tide fans wonder if he’ll stick with his commitment.

He knew he was going to remain with Alabama because of defensive coordinator Jeremy Pruitt, who he considers his favorite coach. Once Pruitt was re-hired by Alabama (Pruitt had coached at the school from 2007-12), Cowan knew he was going to end up with the Tide at some point, and he ended up committing back in April.

Both Cowan and Leatherwood are confident in their abilities to compete with anyone in the country. It’s one of the main reasons why both have actively recruited other top players at their position. Leatherwood helped Alabama land 4-star offensive tackle Elliot Baker two weeks ago. Baker actually credited Leatherwood for helping him with his decision. Cowan helped the Tide land a 4-star linebacker in Benton, who spurned Auburn when he committed.

The message both players give to recruits varies, but the same premise is behind each pitch.

“Look, if you come to Alabama, you’re going to have to work,” Cowan said of how he begins his pitch. “If I go to Florida State right now, I can start as a freshman. It’s that simple. When I first went to Alabama, I talked to some of the players and they were telling me that you need to work if you go here. It’s hard. That intrigued me.

“At Florida State, it was all about, ‘We play a lot of freshmen. You’re going to play from Day 1.’ You play a lot of freshmen when that’s all you can play. It’s not like that at Alabama.”

For Leatherwood, he isn’t as aggressive with his message. The nation’s No. 5 offensive tackle takes an “if you don’t want to play here, we will find someone just as good as you” approach.

“I’m very confident in my own abilities,” Leatherwood said. “That’s just a characteristic that I’ve had growing up. We need players at Alabama who believe they are the best and want to play with the best.”

Cowan added: “I don’t want to play with any chumps. I’m playing with top guys who are going to push me to play harder.”

A few weeks ago, both commits were at Rivals’ 5-star challenge camp, where both players received rave reviews. Leatherwood was named the top offensive lineman, and that was with other elite prospects at his position.

When he was going through 1-on-1 drills, Cowan ran over to Leatherwood to cheer him on. He made sure to be as loud as he possibly could be to make sure other recruits noticed the brotherhood the two share.

“That just goes to show you the kind of program that we have,” Leatherwood said. “We got some of the best coaches in the country and we’re going to play together as a unit. Everybody is cool with everybody in this class and we’re all brothers.”

Said Cowan: “I want everyone to see that we’re teammates and we’re going to be there for each other. I want other recruits to get jealous and say, ‘Dang, my teammates don’t cheer me on like that.'”

One of those other players in attendance was 5-star defensive tackle Marvin Wilson. Both Cowan and Leatherwood have Wilson near the top of the list as far as who they want in Tuscaloosa next season.

Cowan, the nation’s No. 5 outside linebacker, said he thinks Alabama is the favorite to land the nation’s No. 1 defensive tackle. Wilson is also strongly considering LSU and Florida State.

“He seems like he’s leaning toward us right now,” Cowan said. “I think we’re his top school right now. I’m just waiting to see what he’s going to do because I got to get some defensive tackles.”

Some other recruits that the tandem are recruiting include: 5-star offensive tackle Isaiah Wilson, 4-star defensive end Ryan Johnson and 4-star wide receivers Jerry Jeudy, Devonta Smith and Henry Ruggs.

Cowan has a message for those receivers.

“You see that quarterback we got from Hawaii (4-star Tua Tagovailoa)?” Cowan rhetorically asked. “That boy can play. We need all of those receivers to slide through.”

Leatherwood said the coaching staff has noticed that the pair has gone all out with making sure Alabama has the best recruiting class for the seventh straight year. He said the staff did not instruct them to do this. It’s something both took upon themselves to do.

“I didn’t consciously choose to do this,” Leatherwood said. “It just came along with my personality. It came natural to me that I should be one of the leaders for this class.”

Don’t expect them to stop getting in the ears of the nation’s top players, especially with Alabama being ranked No. 2 in the team rankings behind Ohio State. It all goes back to the motto championed by Alabama’s Class of 2017.

“Savages want to play with savages,” Cowan said. “It’s simple as that.”
