As of last night, all signs point to Auburn defensive coordinator Will Muschamp being the next head coach at South Carolina. Muschamp interviewed with South Carolina brass in Charlotte from what I have been told. I was told it was as much a meeting as it was an interview in the sense that preliminary discussions had already taken place. Muschamp laid out his specific plan, including the staff he believes he can bring, how he would attack the recruiting end of things and, of course, what he would do differently offensively this time around.
We have talked about some of the staff possibilities, including coaches like Travaris Robinson, Ellis Johnson, Lance Thompson Tracy Rocker, Burton Burns and Bobby Bentley. Kurt Roper and Major Applewhite have been mentioned as possible offensive coordinator possibilities. Robinson would likely need the defensive coordinator title to take the job, as he has been offered Maryland’s defensive coordinator spot and could get a similar offer at Auburn. I think it would take at least assistant head coach title for Johnson to join the staff.
Thompson and Burns are both close to the retirement benefit threshold in the state of Alabama and that could prove to be an obstacle. I got the impression it could be more of an issue with Burns than Thompson, but I have also been told Muschamp has strong contingency plans if one or both decline.
I can also tell you Muschamp also called former Gamecock star running back Marcus Lattimore on Thursday evening and the two reportedly had a good conversation. While they did not discuss specifics, Muschamp did make it clear to Lattimore that he would have an opportunity to be part of his staff at South Carolina if he is indeed named head coach.
I have heard mixed things on when the hiring could be announced if finalized. There was some internal push to try to get it announced before the conference championship games tomorrow, but that may not be feasible. If not, it could be Sunday or Monday. I would anticipate more information leaking out as the day goes on today.

Some other "insider" threw down the gauntlet to Grady by posting this in his thread:
quote:
1. There is nothing on Kiffin's radar at the collegiate level. IF (big IF), he leaves, it will be for an NFL position. He can stay at Bama is he chooses. Any report that he's in Saban's doghouse is just not true.
2. You won't hear anything else about potential coaching changes until this Sunday or later. It's now on lockdown (staff and players). So anything you hear/read is here-say, guesses, or flat out lies. I dare anyone in the media to ask Coach Saban about coaching changes for the rest of this week . . . That will make major headlines. Poop, tin horn, etc . . .
3. Muschamp is not in the best position to come coach the defense at Bama. That place is Pruitt's to lose. Fact. Having said that truth, it's also true that he has other opportunities and Bama might not be his top choice. One of those choices is staying at Georgia. He wouldn't take anything less than the DC position. He will not come back as a position coach. Some believe Saban will promote from the current great defensive staff and hire a position coach. It's not the sexy choice for fans, but probably the best for the program.
Just a few things I know that are facts.
A few things to remember as we enter the "silly season" of coaching changes (These are some educated observations I've made):
1. Alabama is not a stepping stone job, it is a destination job for a lot of up and coming talented coaches, our DC is going to be named the HC at another major SEC school. Our OC, as controversial as he is, is now a hot name amongst coaching vacancies. IF (BIIIG IF) we lose LK I can't see Saban taking a chance on an OC from a JuCo as talented as he is ESPECIALLY with NCAA baggage.
2. Losing Kirby is a blow no matter how any of us spin it. Bringing back Pruitt will help that blow, bringing in Muschamp won't, Pruitt is a better recruiter. The only way I see Muschamp being hired is as a co-DC with Mel or Bo and Muschamp wouldn't allow that with his ego...he's interviewing for the freakin USCe job.
3. I hope Bama can keep Cochran, but he is a close friend of Kirby's, but Saban has made him into icon status. I wouldn't be surprised if he left or stayed tbh.
4. Definitely agree with the above post and caution everyone to save the knee-jerk reactions till after all the smoke clears after Sunday. We might see Tosh as our next DC

I can understand preferring to keep Cochran for several reasons. I also realize Moffitt declined the opportunity to re-join Saban at Alabama several years ago.
However, given the turmoil and PR disaster Joe Alleva and the powers that be have created over in Baton Rouge, I wonder if this wouldnt be the ideal time to reconnect Saban and Moffitt.

I'm a little out of the loop on this, but wasn't Mack Wilson supposed to announce a commitment today?

Oklahoma fans want to play Bama
First we need to win tomorrow and then I hope that we get the chance to take of these arrogant pricks.

Antioch (Calif.) is coming off a historic season in which the Panthers went 11-1 coming up a point short in the state semis last weekend. Much of the Panthers’ success has been the result of Alabama commitment Najee Harris’ production. The five-star running back rushed for 2,744 yards and 36 touchdowns on the season, averaging a whopping 11.3 yards per carry.

There could still be a little movement in the College Football Playoff standings following this weekend's round of games but by early next week the College Football Playoff will be set. Several of the teams in contention this year feature standout freshmen who haven't waited to make an impact on both their team and the national championship picture.
In this week's First and 10 we break down a current commitment who could have the same type of impact next season at his new college home. The list is ordered by each team's current playoff standing.

RB B.J. Emmons
Alabama always uses two or three running backs and Emmons will fit into that offense nicely, especially if Derrick Henry leaves early for the NFL. He is a bruiser with breakaway speed in the open field, the type of back that Alabama coaches love. Expect Emmons to see plenty of time in clean up duty next year and possibly push for carries as a situational back either way.

Saturday’s SEC Championship Game in Atlanta, Ga., will feature No. 2 Alabama (11-1, 7-1 SEC) and No. 18 Florida (10-2, 7-1 SEC), and no two teams have played one another more in this game than these two programs.
And though Florida is 4-3 all-time against Alabama in previous SEC Championship games, Las Vegas doesn’t think Saturday’s contest will be close.
So, SEC Country reached out to a few targets and commits from each program for their predictions on Saturday’s outcome.
Check them out below.
Ben Davis, LB, Gordo (Gordo, Ala.), Undecided — “Alabama over Florida, 35-14. I don’t think Florida’s offense will be able to do very much against Alabama’s defense.”
Marcus Tatum, OL, Mainland (Daytona Beach, Fla.), Undecided — “It’s going to be a close defensive game. Both front sevens are crazy talented.”
Dre Massey, ATH, Mauldin (Mauldin, S.C.), Committed to Florida — “13-10, Florida. Both defenses will show up again, but Florida will pull it out late.”
Jake Fromm, QB, Houston County (Warner Robins, Ga.) Committed to Alabama — “I have Alabama in this one. I predict it’ll be 31-3 because the Alabama defense will dominate a lesser offense in Florida. Henry will rush for 200 (yards) again.”
Mykel Jones, WR, Patterson (Patterson, La.), Undecided — “I have Alabama. They are clicking at the right time of the year and I don’t see them losing anymore.”
Miller Forristall, TE, Cartersville (Cartersville, Ga.), Committed to Alabama — “Alabama 27, Florida 10. Alabama is playing at a high level and their ability to control the line of scrimmage along with an improving (Jacob) Coker will be too much for the Gators.”
Nate McBride, LB, Vidalia Comprehensive (Vidalia, Ga.), Undecided — “Alabama. Just a better football team.”
Markail Benton, LB, Central (Phenix City, Ala.), Undecided — “I think it’ll be a good game.”

Senior wide receiver A.J. Brown’s monster outing started when he totaled 10 catches for 117 yards and a touchdown in the first half. The four-star wide receiver hauled in a wide-open reception for 32 yards to give the Yellowjackets a 14-0 lead in the second quarter. Petal’s defensive backs played to Brown’s strengths by playing the 6-foot-1, 220-pounder several yards off the ball, allowing him the freedom to pivot and cut around defenders and make his way down the field.
“He was really giving me 5 yards a catch every time and after the catch,” Brown said. “That helped a lot.”
The article didn't say how many catches or yards Brown finished with, but his team won the MS 6A Championship last night.
Let's hope he rolls with the Tide.

Clay-Chalkville lost to Spanish Fort last night. I can't find any stats on Simmons but here is a quote from him regarding the loss:

"The loss is not as bad because we played our hearts out. The loss is good for the underclassmen because they won't be expecting to win." -- Alabama wide receiver commit T.J. Simmons of Clay-Chalkville.

After plenty of debating, Lyndell Wilson has finalized his choices to five programs -- Florida, Alabama, LSU, USC and Georgia, in order.
The 6-foot-2, 220-pounder at Carver-Montgomery will take official visits to each school and has no timetable for a commitment at this time. He is ranked as five-star prospect and the nation's No. 12 overall recruit in the 247Sports Composite.
Watch Wilson bust a move in an all-new episode of the 5-Star Super Show above and break down each finalist with AL.com below.
1. FLORIDA
"Great program. When I took my visit this summer, it felt like a second home to me. I got a chance to sit down with Coach Collins about the defensive scheme and I feel like I fit well in the program. I did research on what I want to major in (photography and sports management) and they have it and their graduation rate is really good. I can see myself playing as a freshman at Florida. The relationship I have with the coaches, they are making it feel like home to me."
2. ALABAMA
"Alabama, I built a relationship with a lot of their coaches since ninth grade. It's my dream school, I dreamed about playing college football there since I was younger. They still have great coaches — Coach (Bo) Davis, Coach (Tosh) Lupoi, Coach (Mel) Tucker. I feel like they're still going to have one of the best programs in college football and they have one of the best coaches in the game. They're going to recruit the best and that's a great school to go to. They are going to make sure you get out of there on time and get your degree and everything you need to go to the next level."
3. LSU
"I feel like they have a great coach in Les Miles. A great program also. They produce great athletes that go to the next level. I feel like it's a great place to be. I feel like they have the best college environment, the best atmosphere and the best fan base. They have a great academic program and I feel like it's a great school."
4. SOUTHERN CAL
"I have to set up an official to go out there. I feel like they made a great hire for the head coach in Clay Helton. I did a little background research on him, he's a great coach obviously. I would like to give those guys a chance to recruit me and go out there and just do my thing and sit down and talk to the coaches. We'll see where it goes from there."
5. GEORGIA
"I really don't know too much about Georgia, but they have their new coach, (Kirby) Smart. I built a relationship with him in the ninth grade. He's like a father figure to me. I can sit down and talk to him about anything. We have a real cool relationship with each other and I want to give him a chance to recruit me at Georgia. I need to set up a visit with him and go see him whenever he gets there."

Want to know how the AHSAA Class 6A state title game stacks up? The writers at AL.com went to the experts to find out. We asked several coaches who faced each state finalist to rate the teams in 10 categories on a scale of 1-to-10. Those ratings were averaged and the sum of those averages forms an Al.com power rating for each team.
quote:
WIDE RECEIVERS
Spanish Fort:Javon Brown is the main man. He has caught 81 passes for 1,628 yards and 17 touchdowns. The other receivers – Robert Rella, Logan Morgan and Hayden Pittman – are all solid, possession receivers, but Brown is the difference maker. The Toros will try to get him the ball in a variety of ways.
AL.com power rating: 7.5
Clay-Chalkville:T.J. Simmons and Nico Collins – along with Pigrome at QB – are the strength of the team and pose a matchup nightmare for opposing defenses. Simmons has 44 receptions for 1,141 yards and 19 touchdowns. Collins has 55 for 1,035 yards and 15 scores. One coach called the duo as good a high school receiving combination as he has ever seen. They have height, speed and durability. Several coaches also were impressed at their willingness and ability to block.
AL.com power rating: 9.5

With Alabama preparing for the SEC Championship, it isn't easy for coaches to get out on the road this week.
Luckily for them, one of their top targets is just 30 minutes away.
Defensive line coach Bo Davis visited Ben Davis, a five-star linebacker at Gordo whose father Wayne is Alabama's career tackle leader, on Wednesday night.
"He told me what he's been telling me all along, that he needs me to come to Alabama," Ben Davis said. "If I decide to go there, I'll be able to play immediately. I'm going to have to play. They're losing some linebackers and they're very thin at linebacker. Same thing they've been telling me."
Ben Davis was aware of news that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart is expected to be Georgia's next head coach. Davis has already taken an official visit to Georgia, but could return for an unofficial.
"I wasn't surprised," Davis said. "Coach Smart is a great coach and he's going to do really well. Georgia and Alabama are still in my top schools. They've both been up there and ever since I've visited Georgia, they've been one of my top schools. I'm interested in getting back and that's why I am glad I'm waiting until Signing Day to make my decision."
Ben Davis said he had not talked to Smart since news broke, and there wasn't much conversation about who Alabama's defensive coordinator would be when Bo Davis visited.
"(Bo Davis) said that they don't know yet," Ben Davis said. "That's something Coach Saban has to decide. They haven't been really focused on it. They've been focused on the SEC Championship game."
Davis recently visited Auburn for the Iron Bowl and got a chance to talk with Auburn head coach Gus Malzahn and assistants Lance Thompson and Travaris Robinson.
"He told me they're really thin at linebacker," Davis said of Robinson. "Coach Thompson told me if I decide to come down there, the opportunity to play is extremely early and I can get better as a player, also."
Notre Dame has emerged as a new official visit destination. Davis plans to visit there the weekend of Jan. 22 thanks to a strong relationship with Irish assistant Autry Denson.
Davis will visit Auburn the weekend before and Alabama the weekend after his Notre Dame visit. He has already officially visited LSU and Georgia.
"Me and him have had a great relationship going ever since he started recruiting me my junior year," Davis said. "He's been down here a lot. He tells me about South Bend all the time and thinks I'd really fall in love with it. I can't wait to go up there and see it for myself, and they say they need linebackers as well."
Said Davis of the final stretch before National Signing Day, "It's going to be interesting. I'm going to have to think about it these next two months and see where I want to be."
