Speed, speed and more speed. That’s the best way to describe Travis Homer. The four-star prospect out of West Palm Beach (Fla.) Oxbridge Academy wasn’t overly flashy, but he breezed by linebackers in one-on-one drills and was arguably the fastest back out there. Homer also did well in footwork drills and was showered with compliments from the camp counselors.

Next three:

1. Elijah Holyfield, Woodward (GA) — The son of former heavyweight champion Evander Holyfield, Elijah has plenty of potential to be a beast at the next level. Even in non-contact drills, Elijah ran like a man on a mission.

2. D’Andre Swift, St. Joseph’s (PA) — Swift is smooth as can be. The nation’s top all-purpose back has the speed to fly by defenders and the moves to juke even the best linebackers out of their shoes. He did just that in today’s drills.

3. Miles Sanders, Woodland Hills (PA) — Sanders didn’t do one thing particularly well, but he was solid all around. Sanders won most of his one-on-one battles with opposing linebackers and did all the little things right in drill work.

Signature Play:

Oregon commit Vavae Malepeai shined in his future home state. The Oregon commit has straight-line speed, but what really stood out about him was his ability to cut on a dime. Malepeai went up against linebackers Curtis Robinson and Caleb Kelly in one-on-two drills and drew plenty of “ooohhhs” from the crowd. Malepeai made Robinson fly to the sideline on a juke and cut back inside, where he put on a move on Kelly and scored.

Quick Hitters:

— Christian Brothers (MO) product Tre Bryant did not participate in this afternoon’s drills. The Kansas State commit said he was injured with a strained hamstring.

— Dylan Moses, the nation’s top ranked 2017 recruit, is projected to play outside linebacker at the next level. But he did get some reps in at running back and displayed excellent footwork.

— Tony Jones Jr. IMG Academy (Fla.) was perhaps the best receiving back at today’s camp. Jones did especially well on deep routes, where he caught the ball at it’s highest point. He should be a good pass catcher out of the backfield for Notre Dame.

— Alabama commit Najee Harris is tall but still very fluid. Harris can start and stop with ease and is also an excellent receiver out of the backfield. He is rated as the No. 1 running back in the country for a reason.

Rahshaun Smith, Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy: Not only did the 6-foot-3, 225-pound Smith have one of the best frames/builds among the group, he flashed an excellent set of skills to go with it. The former defensive lineman is extremely athletic, played well in space and in pass coverage and is only going to get better. In one-on-ones, the backs felt his presence.

Next Three

1. Dontavious Jackson, Houston (Texas) Alief Elsik: In one-on-ones, he smoked the competition, shutting down the opposition largely because of his physical presence close to the line of scrimmage. He takes up space, and is difficult to get around.

2. Dylan Moses, Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab: After starting the day out at running back, the No. 1 overall recruit in the country for 2017 shifted to linebacker and displayed his tremendous speed, lateral quickness and change of direction.

3. Lyndell Wilson, Montgomery (Ala.) Carver: The 5-star recruit isn’t the tallest or widest backer in the class, but his quickness and instincts allowed him to consistently be in position. Also, few linebackers in this field have his closing ability.

Covering a route to the flag, Smith kept with 5-star 2017 running back D'Andre Swift stride for stride, effortlessly turning his hips along the way, before twisting his body to tip the pass away on the goal-line at the last second.

quote:

Quick Hitters

-Moses wasn’t the only player to split reps between running back and linebacker; so did Louisiana standout Devin White of Springhill (La.) North Webster. He seemed more comfortable on offense.

-Although Devin Bush of Pembroke Pines (Fla.) Flanagan measured in at around 5-foot-9, once they hit the field he fit in. Bush is quick and physical, and he covers a ton of space. More than anything, he goes hard every rep. He’s a guy that also could possibly play safety.

-Five-star linebacker Ben Davis of Gordo (Ala.) has one of the best frames in the entire class, but he played a little tentative at times, particularly in space. It will be interesting to see how he does moving forward in the seven-on-seven portion. The ability is there.

-Maryland commit Keandre Jones of Olney (Md.) Good Counsel arguably had the best hips in the group.

BEAVERTON, Ore. – The first day of The Opening delivered. On Wednesday afternoon, The Opening campers took to the practice fields to take part in position specific drills and one-on-one work. It was the first opportunity to see some best-on-best competition and already a few prospects have taken a big step forward.

quote:

Offensive Alpha Dog

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy's Isaac Nauta is the most complete tight end in the country. Already one of the bigger, more physical blocking tight ends in this strong tight end class, Nauta dominated a one-on-one passing session in which he was muscling safeties, shaking smaller cornerbacks, creating major space and sucking up every ball thrown his way. Given the competition, I can't remember a better tight end performance during a one-on-one period at any camp anywhere.

Defensive Alpha Dog

The No. 1 prospect in the country according to 247Sports Composite looked like the No. 1 player in the country in the first one-on-one session of the week. Rashan Gary out of Paramaus (N.J.) Catholic was scary good with his get-off and his power. The get-off, we already knew about. The guy is a 4.8 40-yard dash kid and one of the most athletic defensive linemen we've seen in years but when he explodes off the line of scrimmage, he then has the hand strength and power to jolt offensive linemen and beat them with leverage and power.

Quick Hitters

***Rashan Gary is a slender defensive lineman and that's not a knock. Every year he seems to turn what little bad weight he has into lean muscle. He may be a month away from a six pack. Right now Gary could play all over the line of scrimmage and in fact he's one of the rare big bodies that may have grown from a defensive tackle into a defensive end rather than the reverse.

***On the flipside, Julian Rochester has a lot of bad weight and it shows with his feet. He just doesn't have the explosiveness needed right now. I once thought he had the versatility to be a DE in Georgia's 3-4 but that versatility isn't there at his current weight. Right now he would have to be a nose.

***One of the most telling reps of the day came from Gardena (Calif.) Junipero Serra defensive lineman Oluwole Betiku. The No. 1 weakside defensive end in the country finished a rep and then got some very specific instructions from his defensive line coach prior to the next rep. It was the type of instruction that prospects typically listen to and even absorb but aren't able to actually implement due to all the variables in play during a one-on-one rep. But Betiku executed what they asked of him perfectly and won his next rep in dominant fashion. Considering Betiku has only played one year of football that coachability can't be overstated.

***Jamyest Williams is the ultimate scrapper. Even as an undersized underclassman, the Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer cornerback was acting like he was the big man on campus. He was jawing with receivers, fighting for reps, generally competing with a major chip on his shoulder and that's what you like to see out of a cornerback.

***La Puente (Calif.) Bishop Amat wide receiver Tyler Vaughns struggles getting separation against man, press coverage. He hasn't added the strength over the last year that we'd like to see complement his ball skills. Those ball skills though are still elite. Vaughns' saving grace is that he doesn't need a lot of separation to make catches because of his length and his ability to snatch the football.

***Jack Jones could have made an argument as the top DB at Wednesday's practice. He's a smaller guy at 5-10, 170 pounds. The 6-4, 240-pound Isaac Nauta beat him on two different occasions where he left him flat footed with a shake. Let that sink in. Jones is elite. Nauta is just that good.

***I like Jonathon Cooper more and more every time I see him. The revelation of Wednesday's practice is that Cooper doesn't have to be strictly a speed rusher. That's still going to be his bread and butter with a 4.7 40-yard dash at 238 pounds but he was able to deliver some punch on Wednesday as well and he will continue to develop into more than a one-trick-pony.

***Some running backs try to dance when they're asked to beat a linebacker in space but D'Andre Swift's reps displayed outstanding quickness and ability to cut without excusing himself from a football context. He's a decisive runner that to me was the best guy with the ball in his hands out of all the backs on Wednesday.

***If you are arriving at The Opening as an offensive lineman from the island of American Samoa, you've got a reputation of toughness that you are expected to uphold. Frederick Mauigoa did that in a big way. The interior lineman showed strong hands and quick feet and he's going to see his profile soar in Oregon.

***Freddie Swain is the best route-runner on the Nike Campus this weekend.

***The Opening coaches allowed Erick Folwer to rush from a two-point stance during OL/DL 1on1s similar to a 3-4 outside linebacker. That's really what Fowler is right now as a hybrid guy. With LSU getting Fowler committed as a linebacker, and given new defensive coordinator Kevin Steele's background running the 3-4 at Alabama, this could be a preview of things to come for Fowler in Baton Rouge.

***At one point during the RB/LB receiving 1on1 drills, Keandre Jones was defending a running back that was split out as a wide receiver. The 6-3, 200-pound Jones looked like he was an every-down cornerback with the way he was able to flip his hips and run down field with the back.

Below, we take a look at the top performers from the defensive back group.

Alpha Dog

The defensive back that had the best overall performance on day one at The Opening was Southlake (Texas) Carroll cornerback Obi Eboh. The 6-foot-1, 185-pound prospect looked smooth going through drills and really started to impress during one-on-ones. Ebhoh has great size for a corner and was more than capable of bodying up bigger receivers.

Next Three

1. Long Beach (Calif.) Poly cornerback Jack Jones was productive coming away with a pair of interceptions on the day. Though undersized at 5-foot-10, 160-pounds was willing to get physical at the line of scrimmage with wide receivers and stay attached throughout the route. Jones did meet his match when having to cover five-star tight end Isaac Nauta during one-on-ones though.

2. Suwanee (Ga.) Peachtree Ridge safety Nigel Warrior was also active during the first workout of the week. The 6-foot, 175-pound prospect was able to get his hands on several passes during one-on-ones with his tight coverage.

3. Lawrenceville (Ga.) Archer 2017 cornerback Jamyest Williams is one of the few underclassmen in the event, but he certainly looked like he belonged facing the older competition. The 5-foot-9, 170-pound prospect played with a chip on his shoulder and was ultra competitive.

Signature Play

The play of the day came from our Alpha Dog, Obi Eboh. He got physical with the 247Sports’ No. 1 wide receiver Kyle Davis off the line of scrimmage, stayed attached throughout the post route before undercutting the route for an interception.

Quick Hitter

— It was a rough performance for the defensive back group as a whole. The wide receivers were significantly better during the first day of competition.

— Westwood (N.J.) defensive back Jordan Fuller showed the speed to stay with the vertical routes at 6-foot-2, 190-pound. He also showed the presence of mind to not panic if the receiver has the step on him and still make a play on the ball as it gets to the receiver.

— Coconut Creek (Fla.) cornerback Trayvon Mullen looked extremely smooth and fluid going through defensive back drills. However, he did take a few lumps during one-on-ones drills along with the rest of the group.

— The defensive back that might of had the toughest day overall was Waco (Texas) cornerback Eric Cuffee. Four-star receiver DeKaylin Metcalf blew past him on a simple go route, was the most notable missed assignment.

Bradenton (Fla.) IMG Academy five-star tight end Isaac Nauta’s was virtually unstoppable during one-on-one’s. His speed and quickness out of the breaks left linebackers in the dust and his size and strength was no match for some of the best defensive backs in the country.

Next Four

1. Sam Bruce, Ft. Lauderdale (Fla.) St. Thomas Aquinas - He made a run at the Alpha Dog spot. Bruce was lightning quick and was effective against both bigger and smaller corners. He also showed the ability to go up and get it. Bruce made several highlight grabs during the 1-on-1 session today.

2. DeKaylin Metcalf, Oxford, Miss. - He was able to get open deep a couple times. He used his size as an advantage over smaller defensive backs. He was also in the debate for Alpha Dog.

3. Freddie Swain, Citra (Fla.) North Marion - Silky smooth in and out of his cuts. Swain caught everything thrown his way and made it look too easy.

4. Darryl Turner, Hyattsville (Md.) DeMatha - The 5-foot-9, 175-pound Maryland commitment attacked his routes and muscled through tight coverage all afternoon. He shined on slants and out routes, but also showed the ability to burn the defense on deep balls.

Signature Play

Nauta’s play of the day came on an out route. He shook a smaller, quicker defensive back and left him on the ground, he proceeded to go up and snag the ball one-handed.

Quick Hitters

- Binjimen Victor struggled in press coverage, but found success later in the session on a couple deep passes.

- Devin Asiasi was the second best tight end on the day. He used his size to shield defenders from the ball and runs well for his size.

- Nate Craig-Myers, the nation’s 247Sports Composite No.1 overall wide receiver, wasn’t asked to run very exciting routes. Almost everything was short and underneath, but to Craig-Myers credit, he caught everything thrown his way.

- Demetris Robinson did a great job of high pointing the football and using his reach to take advantage of smaller corners.

Alpha Dog

Honolulu (Hawaii) Kaiser offensive lineman Michael Eletise did not get a ton of reps on Wednesday but the 6-foot-4, 313-pound guard from Hawaii made the most of his. Eletise was easily the most physical lineman on the day, throwing Antwuan Jackson to the ground on one rep. He keeps his feet moving on the interior and gets a great initial punch to not let the defender into his body.

Next Three:

1. Gregory Little, Allen, Texas: One rep against five-star Rashan Gary aside, the nation’s No. 2 overall player looked the part on Wednesday. He was one of the few tackles that was able to keep the speedy edge rushers at bay.

2. Frederick Mauigoa, Pago Pago, American Samoa: The three-star from Samoa was one of the bigger surprises on the day. He stonewalled a couple of stout defensive tackles at the line and had the other players asking who he was.

3. Michael Onwenu, Detroit (Mich.) Cass Tech: The 6-foot-3, 365-pound Michigan commit is stronger as a run blocker on tape but he was pretty much impossible for the defensive tackles to move on Wednesday. He had the entire offensive jumping up and down when he threw a defender to the ground like a rag doll.

Signature play:

Gregory Little vs. Rashan Gary was a matchup of five-stars and the top two composite players in the country. The first rep, Gary easily got the better of Little using his strength and speed to get to the quarterback. A blow to Little’s pride, the Texas A&M commit was able to cut Gary off on the next rep.

Quick hitters:

-Class of 2017 guard Jack Anderson is one of the few players in attendance in his class but he was not afraid to go against some of the best defensive linemen. He lost the first reps against McTelvin Agim and Antwuan Jackson but came back to win them the second time around. Watch out for him at this event next year.

-Three-star Clemson commit Sean Pollard had a couple nice moments. Though listed as a guard, the 6-foot-4, 290-pounder played tackle and showed quick feet.

-TCU commit Austin Myers was relatively quiet but had one of the better plays of the day. He cut off the defensive tackle with an inside shade and had the defender going backwards at the end of the play.

For the initial Rivals250 for the Class of 2017, exactly 250 players earned four- or five-star status. As the evaluation cycle for the class rolls along in coming months, several more players will join the ranks of four-stars. So who almost made the cut this time? There were 10 players who just missed making the Rivals250 and were heavily debated by the Rivals.com analysts. We breakdown each prospect with a look toward what they need to do to get over the hump.

I don't think we have offered the next couple guys I post about, but they are from the state of Alabama so they may worth keeping an eye on.

Johnson has solid size (6-4, 235) and interesting film. He seems to get off the line incredibly well, but needs to show more raw upper body strength. He's a bit of an unknown because he was absent from the summer circuit, but he's shown plenty on tape and will have a lot of eyes on him as he begins his junior season. Johnson has a lot of raw tools in place.

Farrell is another prospect with serious buzz and impressive size at 6-4, 245. He seems to rely a bit much on his upper-body strength, but moves his feet well for a prospect of his size on film. Farrell could be a big junior season away from a rush of new scholarship offers as well as a four-star rankings. If Farrell becomes comfortable with his body this year, he has the tools to be truly dominant.

The Opening annually attracts many of America's most impressive high school athletes, including several football prospects primed to make an impact in college and beyond.

More than 160 recruits are assembled at Nike World Headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, and spent Wednesday vying for honors during testing for the Nike Football Ratings Championship. This process features several facets, but none are more revered than the 40-yard dash.

The sprint showcases burst, speed and stamina—important elements for any successful player. Here's a closer look at the 10 participants who finished ahead of the pack during this stage of testing, per Student Sports.

quote:

5. 4-star ATH Demetris Robertson

•40-yard dash time: 4.34 seconds
•School: Savannah Christian Prep (Savannah, Georgia)
•Size: 6'1", 165 lbs.
•247Sports' composite ranking: No. 34 overall; No. 1 athlete

Demetris Robertson sits atop a deep list of athletes in composite rankings and further proved he's worth the hype with an eye-opening effort in Beaverton. The slender standout presents promising attributes at defensive back and receiver, with speed serving as an invaluable skill in either setting.

He initially committed to Alabama last summer but changed his mind in April. Robertson is still considering the Crimson Tide, but Georgia and Florida present serious in-conference competition.

•247Sports' composite ranking: No. 97 overall; No. 15 wide receiver

Former Texas A&M commit Tyrie Cleveland finished tied as the fastest competitor among offensive talents, displaying extraordinary speed for an athlete of his size. After clocking a 4.32 in preliminaries, he nearly matched that performance with a 4.36 effort in the finals.

Cleveland caught 53 passes for 1,105 yards and 13 touchdowns in 2014, averaging nearly 21 yards per reception. Since backing off a verbal pledge to the Aggies this spring, TCU, Houston, Arizona and Florida are among intriguing options rising to the forefront of Cleveland's recruitment.

Nigel Knott turned heads early in the day with an absurd 4.30 sprint. Later, he narrowly missed on out the Nike Rating National Championship title.

His recruitment consists of several top-tier programs, with Florida State, Alabama, Tennessee, Ole Miss and Oregon emerging as potential landing spits. Knott notched 112 tackles, 16 pass breakups and four interceptions as a junior.

BEAVERTON, Oregon — Nike World Headquarters was loaded with talent from coast to coast at all positions Wednesday, as The Opening kicked off with drills and one-on-one matchups.

It was a chance for the Elite 11 quarterbacks to connect with the rest of the talented recruits, as over 160 athletes were in attendance.

Here are some key takeaways from Wednesday's action:

quote:

Gary vs. Little battles a treat for all

Arguably the most anticipated one-on-one battle of Wednesday took place when the nation's No. 1 player, defensive tackle Rashan Gary, lined up against the nation's No. 2 player, offensive tackle Greg Little.

Gary and Little faced off in two separate reps; Gary won the first, while Little took the second. It only made sense for the two—good friends off the field, competitors on it—to split the reps.

"Him being No. 2, and me being No. 1, he wants to go against me, and I want to go against him," Gary said. "At the end of the day, we challenge each other. He's the best competition I've seen playing tackle, and I'm happy to challenge myself against him.

"Once the football season comes, and if I can handle him, then I can handle anybody."

Little said he enjoys battling against Gary, as they both make each other better and that competing against Gary is a daily expectation during his time at The Opening.

"I want to go against the best," Little said. "I feel if I don't go against the best, I'm just wasting my time. He's the best, so I want to go against him. We're real close, so it's cool."

Look for the battles to become even more exciting when the linemen put on pads.

Top 10 coming for jumbo athlete White

Devin White can play several positions on the football field, and he's wanted by several schools—including Ole Miss. Just ask 5-star quarterback Shea Patterson and 4-star receiver DeKaylin Metcalf, two Ole Miss commits hoping to land him.

White, a running back/linebacker prospect, told Bleacher Report he is planning on releasing a top 10 before he leaves Oregon. When, however, is still up in the air.

What White knows is the kind of winning program he's looking for.

"I'm a people's person and a family person. If you treat me like family, and I know you're there for me, that's what I'm looking for," White said. "Getting on the field, I'm a team player, so I'm going to do what I have to do to be a great player for the university.

"I want to believe in the coach in helping me get to the NFL, which is a final goal for me. Another thing, I just want to feel comfortable. At the end of the day, I want my parents at my games and for me and them to be comfortable with the university."

White, who measured in at 6'1" and 258 pounds, ran the 40-yard dash in 4.49 seconds Wednesday. LSU, Ole Miss, Alabama, Arkansas and Auburn are among the schools believed to be on his radar.

This just in: "The Hulk" is coming.

Alabama commit Kendell Jones Jr., the nation's No. 10 defensive tackle, is expected to be in uniform for Thursday's competition. On Wednesday afternoon, his father said he was en route to Oregon and was expected to arrive at the Portland airport Wednesday evening.

What that means is the offensive linemen at The Opening will have a 6'4½", 361-pound truck to defend—and Thursday is expected to be a day where the linemen put on the pads for workouts.

An entertaining week of events at The Opening is highlighted by a star-studded seven-on-seven tournament that tests the skill set and competitiveness of America's premier college football prospects.

The action, which takes July 7-10 at Nike's world headquarters in Beaverton, Oregon, puts bragging rights on the line and can ultimately impact how recruits are rated nationally. National television will broadcast portions of the tournament, adding another element of intrigue.

Based on each team roster, here's how we rank all six seven-on-seven squads before things get underway in Oregon.

quote:

6. Hyper Cool

Offensive Playmakers

Quarterback KJ Costello and tight end Kaden Smith are both committed to Stanford, setting the stage for an early indicator of their on-field chemistry in Beaverton. Georgia running back Elijah Holyfield is the son of legendary boxing champion Evander Holyfield and teams up with speedy Washington pledge Sean McGrew in the backfield.

Costello, uncommitted passer Jawon Pass and Oklahoma State commit Nick Starkel will work with a receiving corps that features California standouts Tyler Vaughns and Javon McKinley. Pass-catcher Chase Claypool is expected to commit at The Opening, with Notre Dame trending as his choice.

Defensive Playmakers

This is a strong group down the middle, with hybrid linebackers Curtis Robinson, Jeffrey McCulloch and Caleb Kelly patrolling the intermediate level. That unit is backed by Florida cornerback commit Chauncey Gardner, top Texas safety Deontay Anderson and the dynamic David Long, who is considered the top 2016 defensive back in California.
