SCOUTTV: MARTELL AT OPENING REGIONAL
Greg Biggins
National Recruiting Analyst

Las Vegas (Nev.) Bishop Gorman quarterback Tate Martell showed why he could be the top signal caller out West in the '17 class with an MVP performance at The Opening Regional camp in Eugene over the weekend.

The 2017 West Coast QB Class looks very strong and you can make a strong argument that Tate Martell is at the top of the charts.

Analysis: Martell is undersized but has some nice physical tools to work with. He has a very live arm, can consistently spin the football and is accurate on the short, intermediate and deep throws. He's a very good athlete with a strong lower body and moves around very well in and out of the pocket. He's a dual threat quarterback who plays with a poise and maturity beyond his years and has an incredible work ethic off the field-Biggins

Martell is at this best with the pads on as his ability to run around and make plays with his legs sets him apart from other quarterbacks.

He's still a tremendously skilled drop back passer and showed his skill set on Sunday taking home QB MVP honors at The Opening Regional Camp in Eugene. Here's a closer look at Martell in action:

RICHARDS TO VISIT A HANDFUL OUT OF THE SEC
Corey BenderCorey Bender
Florida Recruiting Analyst

A long-time Miami pledge out of nearby Wellington (Fla.) High, four-star athlete Ahmmon Richards has a handful of visits in mind for over the summertime, including one to Alabama's campus in Tuscaloosa.

July 22 will mark a year since Ahmmon Richards made an early verbal commitment to Al Golden and the nearby University of Miami, a school that's already registered an eye-popping 22 verbal commitments in the class of 2016.

Richards, labeled as a four-star prospect and the No. 1 athlete in the Sunshine State on Scout, possesses intriguing size, instincts and range in the back end of the defense at safety, but will be kicking off his collegiate career at wide receiver once he steps foot in Coral Gables.

"One thing (that led me to commit) is their academic prestige," Richards said. "The coaching staff, we have a really tight bond and I know all of them really well.
"They like my game all around and what I bring to the table. They just like me as a person. I mostly talk with (wide receivers) coach (Kevin) Beard, coach Golden, (defensive line) coach (Randy) Melvin and (offensive coordinator James) Coley."
Despite being rock solid to the Hurricanes, Richards wants to experience the recruiting process and will be hitting the road to get a glimpse of some of his additional suitors, including a handful out of the SEC.

In addition to the U, Richards says two programs have solidified themselves as official visit destinations in the fall.

"Later in the summer, I'm going to Alabama, Auburn, Tennessee, Georgia and LSU," Richards said. "Me and two of my coaches are going on those visits.
"I know definitely Alabama, LSU, and of course Miami (will receive official visits)."

Like Richards, Amari Cooper is a South Florida native that was tabbed as a four-star prospect cruising into his senior year of high school at Miami Northwestern. Cooper ended up taking his talents to Tuscaloosa and blossomed into an elite talent and first-round NFL draft pick under the guidance of Nick Saban and offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin.

"I like how they pass the ball a lot, like last year," Richards said. "They're becoming more of a receiver school, and it's Alabama (laughter). I speak with (wide receivers) coach (Billy) Napier."

Richards, 6-foot-2.5, 180 pounds, is a smooth athlete who flashes big-time speed and play-making ability on both sides of the ball. Just in his spring game alone, Richards came up with a trio of interceptions and took two of them back to the house as well.

In addition to his intriguing size and speed combination, Richards shows good body control and concentration when adjusting to poorly thrown balls. He might have more long-term upside in the secondary, but Richards views himself as a receiver and will be playing that role in James Coley's offense.
Richards has no visits planned at this time.

I am really excited about him. I wonder if we will be more open to using the TE in a WR role in the future. He will be the perfect target for whoever wins the next QB battle.

NATION'S NO. 6 RB EXPLORING OPTIONS
Michael Clark
Regional Recruiting Analyst

B.J. Emmons decommitted from Georgia last week. Emmons’ head coach Brandon Allen spoke with Scout about his star player’s decision to reopen his recruitment and more.

B.J. Emmons reopened his recruitment last week.
”I think B.J. just wants to explore his options,” said Brandon Allen. “Several schools have started to show quite a bit of interest in him and I think he felt he needed to check them out just be fair to himself, and so he could make sure he finds the best fit. Georgia is still in it, though.”

The four-star running back visited Alabama and Tennessee a few weeks ago and according to his coach, both trips went very well. Along with Georgia, those schools appear to be in the best shape for Emmons.

”Besides Georgia, the main schools I feel like he’s most interested in are Alabama and Tennessee,” Allen said. "He likes a lot of things about those things about those programs.

“I’ve also been in contact with Florida and I think he certainly wants to take a visit down there. North Carolina, NC State and Virginia Tech are also showing interest in B.J. He’s also mentioned LSU, Texas A&M and Ohio State as schools he’s interested in as well.”

Analysis: Emmons is a back made to play big-boy football. Very good blend of power, speed, quickness, and he has the ability to run between the tackles on the perimeter. Loves to run north-south. Does not do a lot of dancing around before seeing the hole, then hitting the hole with aggression. Can be very hard to tackle one-on-one due to strength, balance, and running style. Definitely a running back who will be ready to play early physically.

What’s next for Emmons?

”I know that we’re supposed to go back to Alabama during the second week of July,” Allen said. “And I think we will take another trip to Tennessee at some point. But other than that, I’m not sure where he’ll visit.”
Emmons has no timeframe for a decision.

He finished his junior season with 2,348 yards rushing and 38 touchdowns.

VIDEO: WILLIAMS ON DECOMMITMENT, WHAT'S NEXT

Quinnen Williams committed to Auburn in January and many felt his recruitment was wrapped up. However, he backed off of the pledge this month and now has three programs in the running for his services.

Analysis: Williams is one of those defensive linemen who could project as a tackle or end depending on the scheme. He is a big kid who can run. You see him chasing the ball, hurdling offensive linemen, and making plays all over the field. Still raw in technique and he needs to improve his pad level, but quick off the ball and very strong in pursuit. You see a lot of upside when watching Williams.

Birmingham (Ala.) Wenonah defensive lineman Quinnen Williams, who jumped on his first offer from Auburn in January in what he called a "dream" scenario, is officially back on the market.

The versatile three-star, who may be able to play inside or out at the next level, now has a trio of SEC West programs in the running for his services, as well as a decision timetable.

Will it be Auburn, Alabama or Mississippi State? Scout met with the rising-senior for an exclusive interview on whats next.

Oregon State graduate transfer WR says he's committed to Alabama

Richard Mullaney will finish his college football career all the way across the country from where he started.

Mullaney, who graduated from Oregon State and received his release to transfer, visited Alabama on Monday and announced that he has committed to play his final season at Alabama.

The 6-foot-3, 209-pound Mullaney would be eligible immediately as a fifth-year graduate transfer.

Mullaney had 83 receptions for 1,160 yards and five touchdowns during his OSU career. He caught 52 passes for 788 yards in 2013 but missed half of last season with an elbow injury. He lined up with the starters near the end of spring workouts, according to OregonLive.

He was a three-star recruit in the class of 2011 out of Thousand Oaks, Calif.

The news is big for Alabama, which lost its top three receivers to graduation and the NFL last year, and lost projected key player Cam Sims to a knee injury in spring practice.

Check out some highlights from Mullaney during his sophomore season in 2013. He missed half of last season with an elbow injury.

Eddy Pineiro makes quick leap from soccer standout to Alabama kicker commit
Drew Champlin

Eddy Pineiro's rise from soccer standout to future SEC kicker happened in just a matter of months.

Pineiro came to Alabama's specialist camp from ASA College in Miami on June 6 without much fanfare. Less than a week later, he had three major college offers. The nation's No. 1 junior college kicker committed to Alabama last Thursday on the spot after earning an offer from Nick Saban. Earlier that week, Florida and Miami extended offers.

Pineiro's family is full of Miami fans, but Tuscaloosa felt like home.

"Alabama has everything," the 6-foot-1, 180-pound Pineiro told AL.com last week. "It has great facilities, great stadium and coach Saban feels like I can make it to the NFL."

Pineiro kicked for a few games as a high school senior, but was going to play soccer at Florida Atlantic. But he didn't get cleared by the NCAA, and went to ASA College to play soccer. The school has a start-up football program so it didn't play a schedule last season, but Pineiro joined the program after coaches became aware of his strong leg.

Despite not much game experience, Pineiro thrived under pressure of kicking in front of Saban at the camp.

"We were out there kicking and coach called for four of us to go in the indoor facility to kick for Coach Saban," Pineiro said. "I won the kicking competition and felt like I was the best one on there. I handled the pressure and I'm ready to kick at the next level. The pressure didn't bother me. I just went in there and did what I was supposed to do."

The dominos fell quickly for the scholarship kicker position. Tucker McCann of O'Fallon, Ill., held a Crimson Tide offer since the spring, but committed to Missouri. Alabama offered JJ Molson from Canada, but he committed to UCLA.

Still, there's a chance Pineiro could give Alabama the eligibility of a high school kicker. He's discussed sitting out this fall and enrolling at Alabama in January with four years left to play four. He'll make that decision at a later date.

Adam Griffith returns for his junior season this fall. He's hit 12-of-19 field goals during his career while battling injuries. Even with Griffith's experience, Pineiro's strong leg will help him push for the starting job in 2016.

KornblueKicking.com had a good scouting report on Pineiro from late April, noting a 60-yard field goal in a competition, an event-record 86-yard kickoff and a 71-yard field goal that bounced off the crossbar. Pineiro joined the year-round program for Kornblue Kicking in February.

"He might be the most explosive placekicker to ever have come through our camps," the site said. "It's hard to fathom, but he still has room to improve."

How recent Alabama commit Miller Forristall's move from quarterback to tight end paid off

Miller Forristall was one of the top players at Cartersville High School in Georgia last season, but was only showcasing his talents for half of his team's offensive series.

He was splitting series at quarterback with Trevor Lawrence, a top quarterback in the 2018 class, but then got hurt and missed some time.

After he returned, his coach gave him the option of continuing to rotate at quarterback, or moving to tight end and playing full-time. He chose the latter, and it paid off in a big way.

The 6-foot-5, 220-pound Forristall, a three-star recruit in the 247Sports composite, caught 32 passes for 600 yards and eight touchdowns in half of a season and made a name for himself in the recruiting trail, earning nearly 20 offers.

The big one came last week from Alabama when the Crimson Tide coaches offered Forristall after he performed well at camp. Michigan, Virginia Tech and Miami followed, but Forristall made the trip back to Tuscaloosa on Saturday and verbally committed to Alabama. Alabama assistant Bobby Williams watched Forristall this spring and encouraged him to attend camp.

"I said, you know what, (playing tight end is) going to be best for the team and best for me in the long run so I did it and it worked out for the best," Forristall said.

"I had hoped (it would help in recruiting). I didn't know if it would be this significant and I didn't think it would be this opportunistic, but it's definitely worth it."

Forristall talked with his family the night before coming to Tuscaloosa and decided to make the commitment and shut down recruiting. He'll graduate high school early and enroll at Alabama next January.

"Their tradition, coaches, process that they preach (is what stands out)," Forristall said. "I always wanted to play at the highest level of football possible and that's what it is. It doesn't get any bigger or better.

"They love my frame. They said we'll put 30 pounds on you easy and you'll still be able to run. I'm long, athletic, cerebral, things like that."

The 6-foot-5 Lawrence has offers from the likes of Tennessee, Clemson and California going into his sophomore season. Forristall would like to catch passes from him at the college level.

"Of course, I'm going to work on trying to get him to Alabama," Forristall said. "He'll have every offer in the country when it's all said and done and I'd love to have him at Alabama."

5-star LB Ben Davis talks Alabama, Auburn, package deal probability
Ben Davis

The 6-foot-4, 230-pound linebacker at Gordo holds more than 20 scholarship offers and remains undecided on where he wants to play his college football.

"Right now it's wide open," David told AL.com. "I'm interested in every school that has offered me. I don't have any top schools right now. I'm just taking it one day at a time."

Given his family ties to Alabama and Gordo's proximity to Tuscaloosa, the Crimson Tide is the presumed favorite to land Davis. His father, Wayne, holds the school record for career tackles and he's visited Alabama more than any other school.

Crimson Tide defensive line coach Bo Davis is spearheading his recruitment.

"I call him whenever I want to," Davis said. "We have a great relationship. He comes to the school sometimes. I'm interested in making it a better relationship and seeing more of the campus."

Auburn jumped into the mix for Davis with an offer in January. The Tigers were included in Davis' list of his seven favorite schools in December and he continues to build a relationship with defensive coordinator Will Muschamp.

"He's a great defensive coach," Davis said. "I've been telling a lot of people I really think Auburn's going to be tough this year. They've got Coach Muschamp and Coach (Gus) Malzahn, two great coaches, so I'm interested to see what they're going to do this fall."

Davis is one of three five-star recuits in the state. The other two, Carver-Montgomery linebacker Lyndell Wilson and Greenville defensive end Marlon Davidson, are also uncommitted.

All three have been intensely courted by the Tide and Tigers and the burning question surrounding the trio is whether they'll end up playing for the same school.

"They're my guys... we're real cool and like to hang out and have fun," Davis said. "I really don't know where they'll go or what's on their minds. We talk about it sometimes. We call ourselves the trio. All three of us will probably take it to Signing Day.

"We really don't know where we want to go yet. I can only speak for myself. For me it's wide open, I really can't say about them."

Wilson joined Davis on his trip to LSU last month, but Davidson remained in-state to attend Auburn's Big Cat Weekend. Davidson's older brother, Kenneth Carter played for the Tigers and is now an assistant on Auburn's coaching staff.

Wilson doesn't have family ties to either school. He was teammates with Davidson at Carver before he moved to Greenville earlier this year.

Wilson shared his thoughts on the the package deal with Rivals June 5.

"It's a possibility," he said. "With Marlon going back to Greenville it's probably going to be kind of hard because he's with his family and stuff. But me and Ben are thinking about it."

As for Davis, he is focused on three main factors as he continues to weigh his options.

"Everybody wants to play, but for me it's the education first, because my mom and dad always push that," he said. "Then I'm looking for somewhere I can see myself being comfortable and have great coaches who can help me get better every day. Third is which school can help me get to my ultimate level, which is to get to the NFL."

Davis tallied 85 tackles, five forced fumbles and four sacks for Gordo last season. He is ranked as the nation's No. 5 linebacker No. 22 overall prospect in the 247Sports Composite.
