Another day, another Skype session with Nick Saban and a top prospect. On Wednesday, the Tide's head man chatted with Ennis (Texas) 4-star DE James Lockhart, per the Ennis program's Twitter account. Saban has spent much of the May Evaluation period video conferencing with top prospects nationally, with Lockhart being the latest.
The 6-foot-3, 245 pounder holds an offer from the Tide along with Baylor, Ohio State, Oklahoma, Texas, Texas Tech, and several others. His Crystal Ball currently favors Baylor, with the Bears accounting for 93% of the picks. Lockhart ranks as the no. 107 overall prospect and no. 6 strongside defensive end according to the 247Sports Composite.

Natrick Patrick, who is rated as the state’s No. 9 overall college football prospect, just laughed when asked about what he thought about 25 of 25 recruiting experts projecting him to sign with UGA in the 247sports.com’s Crystal Ball predictions.
The 6-foot-3, 225-pounder from Mays High School will announce between UGA, Alabama, Auburn, and Ole Miss during his team’s spring game on Friday.
“I don’t know how they can make that assumption,” Patrick said. “I guess it’s based on how long UGA has been after me. I really don’t know.
“There may be some people surprised on Friday.
“Or there may not.”
The 5-star is being recruited by UGA at outside linebacker and said he has been told by all four finalists that he is their No. 1 prospect on the board at his position. He wants to study to be a Physical Therapist.
What will be the deciding factor on Friday? “I’m just praying about it to God,” he said. “I’ve going to let God lead the way. Whichever place I get an answer from, that’s where I’m going.”
Here’s Patrick on his four finalists:
Alabama: “Of course, they are one of the top schools in the nation. If you get an offer from them, they should always be one of your top choices. They’ve been showing a lot of interest.” His Mays teammate is offensive lineman Dallas Warmack. What about the rumors on them being a package deal to Alabama? “Honestly, we’ve always talked about playing together in college. But at the end of the day, we’ve got to make whatever is the best decision for each of us, even if it means going to different places.”
UGA: “They’ve been in this recruiting process with me for a long time. They were one of the first schools to offer me. They’ve been showing strong interest since the beginning, and they’ve kept showing strong interest. That let me know I was really a priority with them.”
Ole Miss: “I like them because they surprised me. I wasn’t expecting to like it so much when I visited. It was a great experience. I liked it.
Auburn: “I just love the way they recruit. They send a lot of mail. They show a lot of interest every time I go over there. It’s a very home-like environment. I feel like I’m at home there.”
And why does Patrick want to commit now? Because he’s so highly ranked, he’s one of the few 2015 prospects who can hold out until next year’s signing day if he wanted (most can’t).
“I definitely wanted to do it before the season started,” he said. “I didn’t want to think about it during my senior season of high school football. Because my season comes first, so I just wanted to get it out of the way.

Hale Hentges isn't going to insist that he's without favorites in the process. He certainly has a few. it's just that he's just not itching to share them with the public. His frontrunners will remain confidential.
There will be no list trimming. There will be no top five. Instead, Hentges, a four-star tight end, will simply announce a commitment. And he plans to do it sooner than later.
"I'm not going to release anything about cutting it down," Hentges said. "I'm just going to make a decision mid to late summer."
The established timetable doesn't include slots for official visits, but the Jefferson City (Mo.) prospect has already seen the campuses of most schools involved in his recruitment. He'll take just one in-season trip.
He'll tour his future school and that will be that.
"Once I commit, I'm locked in," Hentges said. "I won't keep travailing or looking around. I'm just going to take the one official visit."

Anyone have any guesses on why our LTs don't play LT in the NFL?
Let me preface this by saying guys like Andre Smith and DJ Fluker (who didn't even play LT for us) are great in the NFL. Two of the best in the game at RT. Nothing wrong with that, no matter what Auburn and LSU fans want you to believe.
But it seems like our recent LTs haven't really panned out as pro LTs, no matter how good they were.
Andre Smith was an All American and won the Outland Trophy. But he never became an NFL LT.
James Carpenter was first team All-SEC and a first round pick, but never became an NFL LT. To be fair, he was never drafted to be a LT. He was drafted to play RT, but that never panned out and now he's barely clinging to life at LG.
Barrett Jones was an All American and won the Outland Trophy at LT. But hasn't even seen the field in the NFL as a Center. Jones' game was never going to let him be an LT in the NFL, that's for certain. He wasn't much of an athlete, he won using his understanding of the scheme. That said, he's not really the same as the other guys because he was never really an LT, but you get the point I think.
CyKo was supposed to be the difference. Was hyped as being a great athlete, hell looked like it in 2012. But then in 2013 the shite hit the fan. He wasn't that great of an athlete. Maybe it was the knee injury. But either way, now he's going to play RT in the NFL.
And of course people are already giving up on C-Rob as a future LT. After the all star games and what not everyone suddenly changed their tune on him. Yes, he's more of an RT right now, but clearly has LT ability, imo. But I wouldn't be surprised if he also became a RT in the NFL.
So, what's the deal? Why do our LTs always shine, but never work out as LTs in the NFL? Even though some weren't meant to be, of course.

I will take a shot at answering that.
We tend to recruit guys that we project to be great in the run game. We like to have those road grading type of tackles. Alabama has (for the most part of our history) been a ground and pound offense. Very few NFL GMs are drafting based on potential of being a road grader. They are far more concerned about protecting that blind side. We did have a great run blocker at LT in Chris Samuels that played the same way in the NFL, but the NFL has changed a lot in the last 15 years or so since he was drafted.

Very rarely do you see a guy come into the NFL and start at LT.
Look at Eric Fisher. He was the #1 overall pick in the draft and he played RT.
Same thing with Jake Matthews from Texas A&M. He is going to play RT for the Falcons.
Give CyKo some time. He'll be the starting LT in Buffalo, barring injury, by the end of his 2nd year.
As for the other guys you mentioned none of them possess LT measurables. They worked out well for us, but the NFL is a different animal.

Good points, yes, but still it just seems that with all of the great LTs we've had under Saban that at least one would stick as an LT in the league. Of course a lot start off on the right side, but none sans MAYBE CyKo will ever make a competent LT.
Posted on 5/14/14 at 6:57 pm to AllBamaDoesIsWin
and I will make my prediction that CyKO may not make a "great" LT and may be destined to stay on the right side.

ESPN NFL Draft analyst Todd McShay released his first 2015 mock draft (subscription required) and two Alabama juniors were featured.
First off the board was wide receiver Amari Cooper at No. 2 to the Cleveland Browns. "He has good savvy and body control to go with his size and speed," McShay wrote.
The other Alabama player was another junior in safety Landon Collins. McShay had Collins also to the Browns at No. 10 via trade. McShay said "Collins brings great speed and playmaking to the safety position."

Working on scouting reports for the site that shall not be named. Cooper is way more polished than Julio was coming out and just as fast if not faster.
LC has the ability, but has to work on processing what he sees a little bit faster. That comes with time.
Yeldon, fumbles aside, is the best RB NFL prospect we've had under Saban. Sucks that he doesn't get more hype.
DePriest isn't a three down backer in the NFL, but if the last five games of 2013 become the norm for him, his play on first and second down will be better than most.
White and Ch. Jones could both get drafted later on, but could stand to have good seasons in 2014. If the light comes on for DeAndrew White while Coop gets doubled, look for him to have a huge season. Well, huge for our standards for guys not named Julio and Amari.

Nice bait on that Yeldon comment. That's sure to get a few bites.
I agree with you on it though.

Was not bait. It's true. First step is insane. Defenders can't prepare for it. Insanely quick feet, understands pass pro, great vision, etc.
Posted on 5/14/14 at 8:45 pm to AllBamaDoesIsWin
It'll still be irresistible to a few.

What a nice shiny hook, and there's my favorite worm. A little nibble wouldn't hurt, would it?
Posted on 5/14/14 at 9:35 pm to chattabama
please explain the hook and bait thing to this naïve Bama fan
Posted on 5/14/14 at 10:27 pm to mrbroker
It means that the poster is trolling the board with a post designed to catch fish using a shiny hook. The content of the post is the bait. Naive posters bite on obvious troll posts by responding angrily or emotionally, which means the bait worked and caught a fish. Experienced posters do not.
