CFP's Bill Hancock says group has 'luxury of time' to determine future format (espn)

AAC reportedly zeroes in on 2 Mountain West teams for conference expansion (SDS)

Air Force & Colorado State seriously considering joining AAC. BSU & SDS waiting/hoping for invites to join PAC-12. AAC wants to add 4 new members asap.

ESPN title for the article is misleading as it is an opinion that has no validity at the moment. Just a pro-union lawyer spouting off her opinion. She was appointed by Biden to this position as council for the NLRB. She is supporting a move by Bernie Sanders and a few others on the far left to push for this.

SO far under the NLR Act scholarships and other expenses associated with it would remain tax free.

The NLRB has no jurisdiction over public universities, only private schools.

Not only that for them to enforce any memo they generate as if it is a law needs to happen via a bill passing through Congress.

Source: Six schools officially apply to join American Athletic Conference (espn)

Florida Atlantic, Charlotte, North Texas, UTSA, Rice and UAB have each officially requested to join the AAC...

Ref: FBS conferences (espn)

AAC expansion to 14 (adds underlined):
E: Tem, Navy, ECU, USF, Chrlt, FAU, UAB
W: Mem, Tuls, Tuln, SMU, Rice, UTSA, UNT

Maybe C-USA will add independents Army, Liberty, UMass & NMS to reach 12 members.

C-USA expansion? (adds underlined):
NE: ODU, Mrsh, WKU, Army, Libty, UMass
SW: MTSU, USM, FIU, LaTch, UTEP, NMSt

No offense, Surge, but why the hell would ANYONE want UMass and NM St? You are talking about 2 of the worst teams in FBS football year in and year out, with no real hope on the horizon for improvement. Both are in football backwater states with little talent to recruit in their immediate vicinity. CUSA would be better off trying to poach the Sun Belt or even FCS.

Good point that UMass and NMS don't bring much to the party, but they're readily available (independent) and it seems doubtful CUSA can poach anyone from the Sunbelt. CUSA might be inclined to only add Army and Liberty. But the Sunbelt might poach a few CUSA teams. James Madison (FCS) is also a candidate for CUSA and Sunbelt expansion.

Sankey plans to implement a new SEC model for equitably scheduling all 16 teams to play each other much more frequently. Probably: 9 SEC games (4 or 5 at home in alternate years); no divisions or pods; 3 regular opponents (rivals) and rotate the other 12 opponents in 6 schedule slots (playing all 12 twice in 4 years); and the 2 teams with the best SEC W-L records play in the SEC title game. Playing 9 SEC and 3 non-SEC games still allows for 7-8 total home games and the FL-FSU, GA-GT, UK-UL, SC-CU rivalry games.

VS: 3 Regular + 6 Rotating (see AL & AR)
AL: AU, LS, TN + FL, AM, OK, MS, AR, SC
AL: AU, LS, TN + GA, TX, OM, KY, MO, VB
AR: AM, MO, TX + AL, LS, FL, OM, TN, SC
AR: AM, MO, TX + AU, OK, GA, MS, KY, VB
AU: AL, GA, MS
FL: GA, MS, OK
GA: AU, FL, SC
KY: SC, TN, VB
LS: AL, AM, OM
OM: LS, MS, MO
MS: AU, FL, OM
MO: AR, OK, OM
OK: FL, MO, TX
SC: GA, KY, VB
TN: AL, KY, VB
AM: AR, LS, TX
TX: AM, AR, OK
VB: KY, SC, TN

Do not like this because Alabama is the only program that will have 3 Big 6 or OU/Tx as regular opponents. Substitute MSU for LSU or Tenn.

Yes we should have AU TN and MSU as permanent rivals. MSU is our oldest and most traditional rival. Cannot stop that rivalry game.

It wouldn't stop. With that scheduling model, all rotational opponents will play each other twice (one at home & one away) within every 4 years.

10 SEC games will further help in being able to play others more frequently.
Even if you have 2 8 team divisions, you could play all 7 in your division, plus 3 from the opposite side.

That actually won't work as well as the 9-game model. Sankey's primary goal is equitable scheduling of all SEC teams to play each other as often as possible/practical. Divisions (or pods) do not support that well. 10 SEC games with 7 fixed opponents and rotating the other 8 opponents in only 3 schedule slots results in less frequent rotation than 9 SEC games with 3 fixed opponents and rotating the other 12 opponents in 6 slots, which still allows for 7-8 total home games every year and out-of-conference rivalry games (UGA-GT, UK-UL, SC-CU, UF-FSU). Overall, it's a much better model.

Playing 10 SEC games and rotating 8 cross-division opponents in only 3 schedule slots creates more problems than it solves.

How so?

How would that be worse than rotating in 2 slots?
Further, it keeps every school with 5 home conference games every year, rather than alternating.

Example:

Assume AL and AU to east, MO to west.

AL could play a schedule like this:
(No permanent cross rivalry)

@LSU, v. State, @ Texas
V.OU, @ aTm, v.Ole Miss
@MO, v.Ark, v.LSU
V.Texas, @. State, @OU
V.aTm, @ Ole miss, v.MO
@Ark, @LSU, v.State
Etc

Although I edited my prior post while you were responding to it, I'll try to clarify more:

3 schedule slots is only slightly better than 2 for rotating 8 opponents (still takes 6 years to rotate all opponents), but not nearly as effective as 6 slots for rotating 12 (all rotational opponents play each other twice within 4 years).

Divisions are not needed for an SEC title game. But divisions do result in more fixed opponents, fewer rotational schedule slots, and inequitable in-conference schedules (because equally strong divisions aren't likely). Ideally, all SEC schedules should be comparably difficult and all SEC teams should play each other as frequently as possible.

For comprehensive illustration, I've completed the SEC opponent rotations chart. A chart like that and slots for byes & non-SEC games are all you need to produce annual SEC schedule grids.

Conference USA future in doubt with four teams expected to join Sun Belt next week (CBSsports)
quote:

Concern has emerged that the future viability of Conference USA is "hanging on by a thread" as college football conference realignment continues to play out, sources tell CBS Sports. At issue is what appears to be the impending defection of three CUSA schools to the Sun Belt. Southern Miss accepted a Sun Belt invitation on Friday, while Marshall and Old Dominion have yet to formally decide. Those schools, along with FCS power James Madison, are expected to be invited to join the Sun Belt as early as next week...

Ref: FBS conferences (espn)

Sunbelt expansion to 14 (adds underlined):
E: App, CCU, GaSo, GaSt, Mrsh, ODU, JMU
W: TxSt, ArkSt, ULL, ULM, Troy, USA, USM

Per back-channels the MWC wants Texas teams. Maybe they'll invite UTEP (CUSA) and TxSt (SBC) to join. If so, maybe the SBC could replace TxSt with WKy, MTSU or LaTch.
