He’s currently 4th in the SEC in tackles.
He now has a punt return TD in his first game returning.
I checked other star safeties at Bama and none had more than 65 tackles as a freshman. Landon Collins had the most in a season with 99 as a junior.
Caleb downs has a chance to eclipse 100 tackles as a freshman.

He’s a freaking beast!

Hopefully he doesn't get hurt returning kicks like Eddie Jackson did. At least he tries to make a play unlike Kool-Aid who seems to be allergic to actually catching and returning the ball.

Our Minkah 2.0
May be even better before he's done.

Minkah was a true lockdown guy in zone.
Minkah had 4 defensive TDs his first two seasons, but he is not the tackler Downs is.

The crazy part is that this isn't even really all that surprising.

Minkah could play every position in the secondary at a high level.
He was an elite talent and student of the game. There is a great shot from last weekend where he was frustrated with defensive calls and engaged with the DC that adjusted to his recommendation and it worked.
Downs has every bit the talent and instincts. If he dedicates himself as much as Minkah did to the study of the game, he may very well be the best defensive player of the Saban era. But, that is certainly a lot of pressure to place on him. Just glad he's in Crimson.

Yep. He’s amazing. I knew he would be when I saw the footage of him at preseason practices.
Was insane movement for fresh out of highschool. He’s a big kid too

He was playing 3rd ...arguable 2nd string All SeC level about the MSU game.

Had a coworker tell me he was the weak spot in our secondary, didn’t know assignments, and got beat a lot. This was after the Tennessee game.
Haven’t talked to him since. Don’t need that dumbassery in my life.
Dude is the truth.

He’s not the best coverage defender by any stretch, but he’s not the worst.
I think Terrion and Koolaid are better at that, but they are also playing a completely different position.
A safety with 90 tackles means that dude is flying around the field. He knows how to get to the football.
