Why is it anytime Alabama gets super far in basketball relative to our history we always end up losing to the eventual national champion?
North Carolina in 1982 - gave Jordan, Worthy, Perkins, James Black a run for their money. I still remember Billy Packer saying, "Black can't keep up with Whately.". No one had heard of any of Bama's players except Phillips a little. They were like noble savages mesmerizing the nation. Took 'em down to the wire, losing by 5. It was much closer than the final score indicated. It was thrilling and satisfying but in the end really disappointing because Bama was as good as they were. NC had more top-end talent but had Dean Smith who put his usual wet blanket over them. Think about it: Jordan, Worthy and Perkins starting together on a college team. Worthy was the MAN on that team. When they were sweating bullets late, that's who they turned to. Enis Whately, Bobby Lee Hurt, Eddie Phillips, Phillip Locket, Cliff Windham, Eric Richardson, Terry Williams, somebody else, can't remember. The subs were about as good as the starters.
Bobby Knight said that Alabama was the best team he faced with his "greatest of all time" 1976 Indiana team that was given some "fortuitous" calls late. Lost to Loyola Maramount the Hank Gaithers year ?1990?. Lost to Providence during their "miracle" run in the Billy Donovan year of 1987, lost to UK for the 4th time in 1986 (very good team just could not get past UK), lost to UConn in ?2004?. I guess BB has had to pay for the kindness shown the FB program over the decades.

My dad and drove to Atlanta for that game
was so sure...so sure that UK could not beat them a 4th time in the sweet16.
those two years of 85/86 and 86/87, they were as good as anyone

I was at that game and will never forget that loss.
Jim Farmer was en fuego, but fricking Billy "the Kid."
Interestingly, that same Providence team had also beaten UAB with Alan Ogg in the first round of the tournament that year, which was held in Birmingham.
