Took 9 innings and 152 pitches but at least one more precious conference W. Softball and baseball are going to age me more than Mother Nature this year.

Box Score

quote:

Kenleigh Cahalan came through with the clutch hit Alabama's extra-inning win over South Carolina, with her ninth-inning RBI single giving the Crimson Tide the 2-1 win in Thursday's series opener over the Gamecocks.

Alabama (27-11, 5-5 SEC) capitalized on a South Carolina (26-10, 3-7 SEC) error in the bottom of the third to score the first run of the day on an Ashley Prange RBI single. The Crimson Tide loaded the bases in the bottom of the fourth but left them stranded, unable to extend the one-run lead. The Gamecocks broke up Montana Fouts' (14-6) no-hit bid with a leadoff single in the fifth and went on to load the bases with nobody out. A strikeout and forceout put two outs on the board, but a passed ball on a third strike in the next at-bat plated the game-tying run from third before a foul popup ended the inning.

South Carolina loaded the bases again in the sixth before a strikeout ended the half-inning with it still tied at 1-1. The teams went down in order for the remainder of regulation, sending the game to extras. Neither team got a runner on until Jenna Johnson led off the home half of the ninth with a single. A bunt single from Larissa Preuitt put two on base and then, after a force out at third, Cahalan came up with Preuitt at second base and laced a single into center field as Preuitt rounded third and slid into home as the Tide earned the 2-1 walk-off win.

Cahalan was 2-for-4 at the leadoff spot, tallying her ninth multi-hit game of the season and extending her hitting streak to six games. Prange and Johnson also had two hits each in the winning effort, their ninth and fifth multi-hit games of the season, respectively. Fouts struck out 15 in the complete-game win, allowing just three hits and two walks, one intentional, with the lone run allowed as unearned.

From Head Coach Patrick Murphy
"We didn't get enough leadoff batters on all night, and that was the key. We have to get more leadoff runners on base. That makes it harder on the other team's defense and pitching. Overall though, I think it was an extremely well-played game. Only one error between the two teams during a nine-inning game is impressive. Montana [Fouts] and our defense took care of the rest. Pitching and defense is usually what you want and eventually you'll come up with a key hit. That's what we did in the nine-inning game last weekend against Missouri and tonight it so happened again."

so another great pitching night for Fouts but had to go 9 innings cuz the batters could score but one run in 7. That is a lot of pitches for her to pitch again today which has been the routine in the past few SEC weekends.

Only 2 players with a BA over 300 in SEC play and the rest are under 257. SOS and this stat plus not having a true number 2 pitcher is why we have a hard time making it out of regional play.

As Joe Friday would say, "Just the facts maam."

At least for now they are still pretending that the games will begin at noon. Cold and windy is the forecast after the rain stops so plan accordingly. Need to win both of these today.

We don't have pitchers not named Fouts. We have a random hodge podge of arms Murph hopes will coalesce into a functional number 2 option. They won't.

Was my point. We have no true number 2

lost to SC 3-1 and our incompetent hitters made their pitcher look like an AA. I think she had 10k's

You can't say that about a coach that has been laying on Bama's leg for way too long. I've been preaching that this clown should be gone for years. We may upset the woke crowd.

Sub for pinch runner, try to steal on first pitch after sub, opponent has a pitchout to catch the runner stealing by a car length.

Tactically, we simply cannot run the bases this year and that’s on the one calling the shots.

The one calling the shots is also the incompetent hitting coach and the reason we don’t have a 2nd pitcher. How long before Montana injures herself or just flat doesn’t have the stuff because of too many innings thrown? Murphy has practically gutted what was an elite program just a few seasons ago.

Bohannon is probably gone after this season. Why don’t we make it a package deal and get rid of Murphy as well before we have to start from ground zero again?

Agree. I would imagine that most of us in this thread are guys and probably played a lot of baseball. I actually played at the college level at UNA and I can tell you just listening to Murphy's interviews with TV crews he just says things that tells me he has not played at a high level. I have heard him say "our batters" for instance instead of "our hitters". I know some may think that is splitting hairs but it is like hearing someone say hindcatcher instead of catcher to me. It just screams I don't know the game.

How long ago? I played at Mississippi College back in the old Gulf South Conference days… played against UNA and Coach Lane “back in the day”.

I hope Murphy didn’t think Esman was going to be our savior this year , I knew after the first 2 or 3 games we were in trouble this year

One step forward, two steps back. Girls continuing to collide into each other trying to catch pop ups, not knowing how to cover a bunt or how to handle a squeeze play. Base runners on with no outs means absolutely nothing in terms of a scoring threat. Asking multiple girls to bunt in interesting situations yet few seem to know how to lay one down. It has to be as frustrating to them as it is to watch it time and again.

Below are the SI write ups. The Tide will be at Samford on Tuesday for those in the area.
