Alabama quarterback Tua Tagovailoa (Photo: Stuart McNair, 247Sports)

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- We heard it all offseason long.

Nick Saban, Steve Sarkisian and Tua Tagovailoa all said the junior quarterback needed to focus on taking what defenses gave him this fall. This past Saturday, with Duke choosing to eliminate the deep ball, Tagovailoa and Alabama’s receivers carved up the Blue Devils with quick passes.

“It felt good,” Tagovailoa said after the 42-3 win in Atlanta. “I think what was really good about today was that we had to sustain drives this time. It was really good to go into the game and having to work to score and not just going out there and taking shots right away. I thought that was a very disciplined defense. They showed us a lot of exotic things in the first half.

“I feel we did a great job of adjusting to what they were stemming to, what they were getting into and they were giving us the looks we wanted.”

Tagovailoa completed 83.9 percent of his passes (26-of-31) for 336 yards and four touchdowns. After a rocky start for the entire offense in the first quarter, that side of the ball started clicking in the ensuing quarter, as Tagovailoa was 9-of-9 for 145 yards and a touchdown to Miller Forristall.

“I think Coach Sark did a great job calling the plays,” Tagovailoa said of the second-quarter surge. “Knowing that they took a lot of the deep things away from us, we had to keep it short. Just have or plays work in-field. It was really those guys, just being able to spit the ball out on a little arrow route or a little bubble route and they’ll make the plays.

“... It was just getting on the ball quick, going fast, not letting the defense be able to get their calls from the sideline and just going with it. It kind of put them in a bind. They were very indecisive on what they wanted to do, as far as where their front was, where the backers would go, where the DBs would go, and we just went from there.”

On the first drive of the game, we saw Tagovailoa check-down to running back Jerome Ford. On his first run, the 6-foot-1, 218-pound quarterback ran out of bounds after picking up the first down with his legs. These were just a couple of signs of him taking what Duke’s defense gave him, as well as taking care of his body by avoiding unnecessary hits from the opposing defense.

Otherwise, it was vintage Tagovailoa in the opener. For the seventh time in his 3-year career, the Ewa Beach, Hawaii, native threw for 300-plus yards and four passing touchdowns. He has accounted for seven of the 36 passing games of 300 or more yards by an Alabama quarterback in school history and tied AJ McCarron for the UA career record for four-touchdown games.

Of his five incompletions, however, four of them were on throws more than 20 yards downfield -- the fifth was on a pass to star wide receiver Jerry Jeudy, who didn’t turn around for the football.

“He did a good job in the game,” Saban said Monday. “There were a couple of things he could have done a little differently from a decision-making standpoint, and we’ll correct those things and hopefully, we’ll continue to improve on that. We were pleased with his performance, and I think he would be the first one to say that we left some money on the table at times if we’d made a little different choices and decisions or whatever.

“But I thought he played really, really well overall. He’d be the first one to say, ‘I have some things I want to improve on,’ and we want to help him do that.”

Tagovailoa added: “I feel good every time we win, but there's always going to be things we can work on, both offense and defensively. But from my perspective, what we can do better is how we start. We’ve got to start fast and we’ve got to finish it, as well. I think we did a great job finishing but didn’t start as good as we wanted to.”

After the first quarter, the Crimson Tide scored on six of its remaining 10 possessions. Two of those were ended by halftime and the final horn, while two more saw freshman placekicker Will Reichard trot onto the field for a punt and a field goal attempt. Tagovailoa threw for 273 yards and the offense produced 422 of its final 512 yards in the second, third and fourth quarters.

Alabama adjusted to Duke’s defense and picked up 25 first downs over the final 45 minutes of the game, and Tagovailoa and the offense were clicking, making for an enjoyable season opener.

“It’s really fun,” Tagovailoa. “It’s really fun for any offense when you’re scoring continuously and you get into a rhythm and you keep doing it. I think that’s what makes it fun.”

As my niece says when considering if the glass is half full or half empty... "excuse me, sir... are you going to finish that?"
So happy the season is here; however, the fact that there is one down and only 14 more to go... got to love/hate that. Trying to have one for Michelle; but it is hard .. well, Jose Q, is a friend of mine. Come on New Mexico State ...go Aggies go

Here’s a detailed look at how Alabama’s offensive line performed over the weekend.
How they graded out

Starters

LT: Alex Leatherwood — 85.7 pass block, 59.1 run block
LG: Evan Neal — 27.6 pass block, 56.4 run block
C: Chris Owens — 61.5 pass block, 55.7 run block
RG: Landon Dickerson — 76.4 pass block, 61.9 run block
RT: Jedrick Wills Jr. — 68.0 pass block, 80.9 run block
Notable reserves
Matt Womack — 74.5 pass block, 66.2 run block

*Grades according to Pro Football Focus

What it means: Evan Neal struggled in his first career start. The 6-foot-7, 360-pound freshman played tackle during high school before moving to left guard this offseason. He failed to provide much push in the running game and allowed two quarterback hurries and two quarterback pressures.

Allowed pressure

LT: Alex Leatherwood — No pressure allowed
LG: Evan Neal — two QB hurries, two QB pressures
C: Chris Owens — one QB hit, one QB pressure
RG: Landon Dickerson — one QB hurry, one QB pressure
RT: Jedrick Wills Jr. — two QB hurries, two QB pressures
LT/RG: Matt Womack — No pressure allowed

Better bring the sun hats, sunscreen and gallons of water to the game this coming weekend. As of right now, it’s supposed to be 98 on Saturday.

LINK ]Alabama practice report: A few notes, perspective on depth By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com

New Mexico State week continued Tuesday in Tuscaloosa with a spirited practice under sunny skies.

A few observations from the media viewing period:

-- Offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr. was out for a second straight practice after hurting his leg Saturday. Nick Saban said it could be a week or two for him.

-- Defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe also remains out. He was on the sideline Saturday using a scooter with a walking boot protecting his injured left leg.

-- The offensive line experimentation would likely continue another week, Saban said Monday. It looked like Landon Dickerson and Jedrick Wills were still with the first group on the right side with Evan Neal and Alex Leatherwood on the left side.

-- It’s also worth noting that Deonte Brown has three more games left on his NCAA suspension. He was a real difference maker as a run blocker late last season before injuries and the suspension sidelined him for the playoff.

-- With Saturday’s forecast calling for 100-degree weather and a 3 p.m. kickoff, dealing with the conditions will be part of the game-week plan. Watching the defensive line, Raekwon Davis had a heavy long-sleeved t-shirt under his pads. None of the other linemen had that as part of the wardrobe.

-- Outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri remains king of the one-liners while coaching with as much passion as any assistant in my time covering Alabama.

-- Former Alabama coach Ray Perkins was watching the action from the sideline.

The Alabama Crimson Tide (1-0) will take on the New Mexico State Aggies (0-1) this Saturday at Bryant-Denny Stadium. Scroll down for game week coverage.

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Alabama worked outdoors Tuesday as it held its second practice in preparation for Saturday’s home-opener against New Mexico State. Players were dressed in full pads and worked under sunny, 93-degree weather. Here are some notes from the media viewing period.

— Freshman defensive lineman Justin Eboigbe (foot) was present during the period. He worked off to the side in a black jersey. He appeared to be doing upper-body resistance work while wearing a high-altitude mask.

— Redshirt freshman offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr. (knee) was again absent from the viewing period.

— Alabama’s defense worked out to the dime package. The first-team unit was made up of Trevon Diggs and Josh Jobe at the cornerback positions, Patrick Surtain II at Star and Xavier McKinney at Money. Jordan Battle worked alongside Jared Mayden at the safety positions, while Shane Lee served as the lone linebacker.

— Battle was later replaced by Shyheim Carter at safety after a few reps. It’s still interesting to see the true freshman get some first-team action.

LINK ]Practice report: Alabama preparing to play in brutal heat by Christopher Walsh
quote:

Near 100-degree heat in forecast for New Mexico State game

Alabama was outside in full pads despite the 93-degree heat because the Crimson Tide will play in in even tougher conditions against New Mexico State.

The forecast for Saturday is sunny and 99 degrees. Kickoff at Bryant-Denny Stadium is set for 3 p.m.

Alabama offensive lineman Emil Ekiyor Jr. was not at practice and is expected to be out a while. (was reportedly seen by others, doing upper body resistance work??)

Still missing among the defensive linemen was true freshman Justin Eboigbe (foot), who was in a black non-contact jersey for stretching.

There didn’t appear to be any changes with the first-team offensive line or the nickel package on defense.

Among those at practice was former Alabama coach Ray Perkins.

Injury rundown

• Junior interior linebacker Dylan Moses: Out indefinitely with a knee injury.
• Redshirt junior cornerback Nigel Knott: Out indefinitely with what Nick Saban has only described as a medical issue.
• Senior interior linebacker Josh McMillon: Out indefinitely with a knee injury.
• Freshman running back Trey Sanders: Out indefinitely with a left foot injury.

[link=(Why Jerry Jeudy has a chance to go down as the best receiver in Alabama history)]Why Jerry Jeudy has a chance to go down as the best receiver in Alabama historyby Christopher Walsh[/link]
quote:

No. 4 for the Crimson Tide still has a season to play, but is already in elite company with the program's all-time greats

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — There are times when they have to stop the game film because of what they just saw.

Occasionally it’s for Henry Ruggs III, Jaylen Waddle or DeVonta Smith, who have all made their share of spectacular plays for Alabama and are considered to be among the best wide receivers in college football.

But more often the guy who has his teammates in awe is junior wide receiver Jerry Jeudy.
“You just like, ‘Wow, how does somebody do something like that?’” Smith said.

On Saturday, against Duke, Jeudy put on another highlight show. He paced the Crimson Tide wideouts with 10 catches for 137 yards and one touchdown.

But how he did it was even more impressive.

There was the spin move. The burst. His trying to run through everyone while attempting to reach the end zone, something the coaching staff might try and get him to do less of in the future and probably won’t have much success.

“The first thing that goes through my head when I get the ball is score,” Jeudy said. “So I just try to score and never let the first guy tackle me. That’s my mindset when I catch the ball.”

The touchdown reception moved him into fourth place on the Alabama career list, tying Ruggs and DJ Hall (2004-07), only no one in the Crimson Tide receivers room has been talking about that

Seriously, did you see that spin move?

Jeudy admits it was probably unnecessary, but his teammates called it worthy of the ‘B’ button on the Madden video game.

“There are things Jerry can do that not everybody is able to do, he’s got some spider senses or something when somebody’s around him, he’s gifted,” Smith said. “It just depends on who the person is and how you react to things.”

As just the program’s second winner of the Fred Biletnikoff Award for best receiver in college football, Jeudy is already in rare territory when it comes to his place in Alabama history — and not because he has a chance to be the third repeat winner.

Jeudy has already proven that he’s the complete package at the position, a rare player who is exceptional at route running, has great hands, speed and a knack for making big plays. He even blocks well, and not just for the offense.

While everyone was looking at Waddle on punt returns, he was one of the players taking out Duke players downfield — albeit with limited success in this game as Jeudy got his first holding call.

“I’ve seen linemen falling on d-linemen, where they pancake them,” he said. “I thought we could fall on the punt. But I guess you can’t.”

Regardless, he’s being called by some the best overall player in the 2020 NFL Draft, and the best prospect at the position in years.

Yes, that includes recent Crimson Tide first-round draft picks Calvin Ridley, Amari Cooper and maybe even Julio Jones.

It sounds almost unbelievable, but Jeudy has a chance to go down as the greatest wide receiver in Crimson Tide history.

His status won’t be determined until after this season, but consider the kind of status we’re talking about here (players listed in alphabetical order):

VERY LONG HISTORY LESSON HERE>... Will let you check the link and check it out.

Those OL numbers are pretty sad. Neal will be good in time, but he isn't ready. Cornbread needs to hurry up and get back and take over that spot so Neal can develop and get ready for 2020. Womack graded out better than most, he may need to take someone's spot as well.

we will have a new starter at LG for the next game. Possible Womack. Someone suggested flip flopping Neal to LT. Why would you take a future NFL player at LT to put a true freshman there? Neal is the answer in the future but not yet.
