That's irrelevant history.

I don't think we can give up a school located in our second largest media market. I know there are tons of other SEC fans in the area but we have that locked in with Vandy and Tenner. I think we would really regret it if say the ACC took Vandy cause we dropped them. Plus Vandy contributes in the 2 other major sports.

Vandy is good at bowling and stealing an equal share of SEC TV revenue. Vandy and Wake Forest are small private schools that belong in the G5. Donate SC to the ACC, Miz to the Big12. Add FSU, GT & Louisville.

N'all they have two baseball championships and very respectable basketball programs and gives us a strangle hold on one of the most important markets in the country. The only thing that makes Georgia Tech of any value is it is Atlanta. Other than that it is the same thing. I would argue they have less recent sports success than Vandy.

Bama has more fans than Vandy in Nashville.
Atlanta > Nashville; GT vs GA
Florida > Missouri; FSU vs UF
Lville/Cinc > SC: UL vs UK, SC vs CL

That isn't the point there are plenty more UT, UGA etc in Nashville than Dores fans. What you don't want is the ACC or B1G snapping them up. Either conference would want those academics and as soon as you do it is going to change the academic, TV and residential landscape especially for one of the most desirable cities to live in the country.

I doubt the ACC and B1G want a conference money pit like Vandy. But they can have them if they do.

I guarantee you they would take them the B1G didn't take Rutgers and Maryland for football.

I would agree with Louisville, but FSU would be a bigger burden than they are worth. They don't really bring a new market thier sports are mediocre and thier administration is a mess and they are weak academically. They bring very little to the table and will have to be carried unless being apart of the SEC substantially lifts them.
FSU is where I would apply the Nashville fan logic. There are plenty of Auburn, UGA and Florida fans in the region and Tallahassee and the panhandle is a region the SEC already has and they add little athletically or academically to the SEC.

I don't understand the Vandy money pitt piece. What they offer overall in other sports, in academics and research easily trumps what little they drag down in the TV contract and honestly I don't think they impact it, the sell is the SEC. Vandy has a 7 billion dollar endowment, I don't think they are leeching of anyone.

SEC FB & Hoops TV contracts revenue is shared equally among SEC members. Vandy's slice of the pie is the same as UA, GA, UF, LSU & ATM.
It's not about market presence. It's about market penetration. How many people are sitting in front of TVs to watch Vandy, SC and Miz play football and hoops? It's less than GT, Louisville and FSU. There are LOTS of FSU alumni & FSU sports fans (who hate UF) throughout much of FL.

I don't think the buts in the seats piece makes Vandy a burden or leech though. If it is revenue it is television markets and Nashville is way better than Tallahassee and Louisville. Buts in seats is usually only important to school and local revenue and Nashville/Vandy is fine. In all other sports and definitely in academics Vandy is better. It benefits us in a lot of ways to have Vandy and would hurt to lose them to major conference, especially for a poorly run public like FSU. Gt of course because of ATL but not because of any Athletics they bring to the table, and Louisville ok as they are usually adequately run and in a good market.

I don't think the TV contracts are determined by asses in the seats but by eyes on the TV and ad dollars generated. I think having Vandy in Nashville helps that. I find it hard to believe that Mississippi State or Ole Miss with thier markets, alumni bases and poor sports results are offering much more than Vandy. When you add to that they are still connected to Universities and Vandy offers the best research, and academic partnerships that can be worth 10s of millions I don't think it is worth it to moderately increase a TV contract.

TV networks care about ratings which impacts their ad revenues. Nashville has lots of TV viewers, but Vandy doesn't put many butts and eyes in front of TVs. How much would any of that other stuff you're talking about decline if Vandy athletics went to a G5 conference?

I agree they don't put many, but they put enough along with they contribute with Bball and baseball which is probably better than most the conference. And as you said all the other SEC fans make up the difference. Add to that what they bring to the academic side, a partnership with Vandy is going to lead to more grant money than a partnership with any other school in the conference and I feel it makes up for that.
Now say the ACC picks them up you are going to lose some of the eyes, some of the adds and the academic side of th house get's almost nothing for partnering with FSU.

I think this were our biggest disagreement comes in. You could be right but what Vandy offers academically, marketwise and in other sports other football makes them highly desirable. They are way better than Maryland, Rutgers, Wake, Boston College just off the top of my head. They also have a 7 billion dollar endowment.

Meet you in Louisville for the SEC game between Bama and the 'birds, I'm sure not wasting a minute in Tallahassee .

That'd be fun! I've lived in St. Pete Beach for a decade and then here the FL panhandle for another decade and the only time I've ever spent around Tallahassee is zipping by it on I-10.
