LINK ]Alabama Football: Can the Aggies challenge the Crimson Tide by Ronald Evans
quote:

Alabama football is in need of a challenge. Can the Texas A&M Aggies provide enough adversity to force the young Crimson Tide defense to grow up?

Going into the 2019 season the second Saturday in October was expected to be a challenge for Alabama football. A rapidly improving group of Aggies under Jimbo Fisher were sometimes slated as capable of an upset of the Crimson Tide.

The season has played out differently. The promised, much-improved TAMU defense of Mike Elko has improved but not enough to carry an offense that has disappointed. With a talented Kellen Mond at quarterback, the Aggies were predicted to be explosive. The Aggies have not exploded enough.

The Aggies have a below-average rushing attack – No. 63 in the FBS yards-per-carry. The result has been too heavy a burden on Kellen Mond. Mond is a true dual-threat and has a strong arm, but against Clemson and Auburn, he did not have enough.

Mond has not delivered when throwing on third down, completing only 48.3 percent of his passes. In NCAA Passing Efficiency ratings, Mond is rated No. 64 in the FBS. That rating puts him slightly above Auburn’s Bo Nix and below the, now benched, Tennessee starter, Jarrett Guarantano. Mond’s performance has been far below his expectations and those of the Aggies nation. But he could have a breakout game against the Alabama Crimson Tide.

With his physical tools, Mond is the kind of mobile QB who could give this Crimson Tide defense fits. So far, the Tide’s pass rush and edge contain have too often been lacking. The inexperience of the inside linebackers has been a problem. That scenario is well-suited to Mond having a big day against the Crimson Tide. He has been patient in the pocket this season, but he has the speed and the leg strength to punish the Tide defense on the ground – especially if the young Tiders give him openings.

Mond has also been a bit loose on some throws, with four interceptions. The strength of the Tide defense is its secondary. Mond may need a clean sheet to keep pace with the high-scoring Crimson Tide offense. In Mond’s favor are three solid receiving targets in Jhamon Ausbon, Quartney Davis and Ainias Smith. Ausbon and Davis are big, physical receivers, in the mold of former Aggies’ star, Mike Evans.

Alabama football is favored by more than two touchdowns. Much will be learned about the Crimson Tide defense if the Aggies offense can keep the game competitive.

LINK ]A trio of worry: Alabama's 3 biggest concerns about facing Texas A&M David Wasson
quote:

On paper, the top-ranked Alabama Crimson Tide should cruise to victory over No. 24 Texas A&M on Saturday afternoon.

Faster, stronger, better at almost every position … that’s why our friends in the desert have installed Alabama as a 17-point favorite over the Aggies.

But we all know games aren’t played on paper, instead on the grid 100 yards long and 53 yards wide. The football bounces oddly (see: Ingram, Mark vs. Auburn in 2010) and the uprights are remarkably unkind.

Texas A&M will pack 102,733 people — many wearing some sort of pseudo-army uniforms — into Kyle Field. They’ll yell in unison and generally make a huge scene. CBS will be there with their cameras, and Gary Danielson will spend the better part of the afternoon griping about targeting and low-key telling the TV viewers how great he is.

But all that is irrelevant to the Tide. It’s pure distraction, akin to the rat poison produced about Alabama football here and statewide on the regular.

What is relevant is that Texas A&M represents Alabama’s most dangerous opponent to date. Will the Aggies end up being the most dangerous opponent the Tide face all season? Only time will tell, what with LSU and Auburn and (hopefully) Georgia/Florida and the College Football Playoff all looming.

There are 3 specific things that Alabama football — and Crimson Tide fans — should worry about Saturday. So here we go:

1. Kellen Mond channels his inner Johnny Manziel
If you’ve been even tangentially paying attention to Alabama football in the past 10 years, Johnny Football still serves as one of the potential nightmares for the Crimson Nation. Manziel carved up the Tide for 345 of the Aggies 418 yards of offense, including 2 passing TDs, as a freshman in a 29-24 upset victory over No. 1 Alabama in Tuscaloosa in 2012. Manziel effectively won the Heisman Trophy that day, and anyone who saw it can’t ever forget it.

Texas A&M’s Kellen Mond is not Johnny Football. The junior is talented, though, having thrown for 1,333 yards and 10 TDs against 4 interceptions this season. The Aggies’ 2 losses (to No. 1 Clemson and No. 8 Auburn) weren’t necessarily his fault, though his stat line against Auburn looked better than the reality of his play through 3 quarters. But he has all the necessary tools.

Mond was just 16-of-33 for 196 yards and 1 TD against 2 interceptions in Tuscaloosa last season, and his freshman campaign (19-0f-29 for 237 yards, 1 TD and 1 INT) was just marginally better. If lightning ever struck in in College Station, this could well be the moment…

2. Tua Tagovailoa twists an ankle
Alabama’s hopes and dreams for an undefeated 2019 hangs more and more on the shoulders of junior quarterback Tua Tagovailoa, who has passed for 1,718 yards (4th nationally) and is 3rd nationally (behind some kid named Jalen Hurts …) in yards-per-attempt at 11.6 yards.

Sweet is a great word to describe how well Tagovailoa has played this season, but Alabama’s offense undoubtedly would sour if he is rolled up friendly-fire style by a lineman or is tackled awkwardly on a scramble.

Hawaiian hearts would crumble if that happened, of course, as the island has only witnessed 1 Heisman Trophy winner. If Tagovailoa goes down against Texas A&M, much like he did late last season despite throwing up monster numbers, that could be all she wrote for Mr. Stiff Arm.

Prince himself would be hard-pressed to argue that Tagovailoa is the most electric quarterback in Alabama’s history. Without him, though, the Crimson Tide would find it difficult to overcome Texas A&M in Kyle Field.

3. Jimbo Fisher finally gets it all together for an entire 60 minutes

It is games like this that Texas A&M threw $75 million at John James Fisher Jr. 2 years ago as part of his divorce settlement from Florida State. Fisher was as done with Tallahassee as the Seminoles were with him — all that in spite of him successfully following the Hall of Fame tenure of Bobby Bowden by winning 83 times in 8 seasons and the 2013 national championship.

With 8 years remaining in his initial contract, however, Fisher hasn’t exactly delivered on the promise of an upgrade from Kevin Sumlin in College Station. Sure, Texas A&M went 9-4, including a Gator Bowl victory, last season. But those losses to Clemson and Auburn earlier this season have some in Aggieland wondering just what kind of upgrade they ended up getting.

A victory against Nick Saban, for whom Fisher was offensive coordinator and quarterbacks coach at LSU from 2000-2004, would be as sweet as it gets. Former Saban assistants are 0-for-17 against him, with Fisher eating losses at Florida State in 2017 and in his 1st season at Texas A&M last season.

Much like the Mond scenario, it would be akin to lightning striking … but lightning does strike somewhere all the time.

Is it Mond’s moment for a signature victory? Is Tua Tagovailoa due for a twisted ankle? Is it Fisher’s day Saturday?

Is it Texas A&M’s time once again to knock Alabama off the throne?

Alabama safety Xavier McKinney pursues Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond. (Photo: Marvin Gentry, USA TODAY Sports)

quote:

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. -- Alabama junior safety Xavier McKinney came away impressed with Ole Miss true freshman quarterback John Rhys Plumlee, who accounted for 250 yards and three total touchdowns in the Crimson Tide’s 59-31 conference win over the Rebels two weeks ago.

“I thought he was really good,” McKinney said of Plumlee. “I wasn’t really expecting him to be what he was and how he played just because he was younger and I hadn’t really seen too much on him. But he’s going to be the truth in a couple years -- or really in the year.”

It was a bit of a wake-up call for an Alabama defense that gave up 279 rushing yards, including 109 yards from Plumlee. Those 279 yards were the most the Crimson Tide has surrendered on the ground since giving up 281 rushing yards to the Ohio State Buckeyes in the 2014 Sugar Bowl.

But Alabama won’t be caught off-guard this week by Texas A&M quarterback Kellen Mond.

“He played really well against us last year, so we have a lot of respect for him as a player,” head coach Nick Saban said. “I think that his sort of total understanding of what they’re trying to do has enhanced his performance to some degree. I think the same receiver corps pretty much that he had a year ago, I think those guys work well together. They’ve been able to have really good balance on their offense in terms of run-pass.

“Their quarterback runs, although they’re sometimes limited but actually hurt us last year in the game, are something you always have to be concerned about with him at quarterback.”

In five games this fall, Mond has passed for 1,333 yards, 10 touchdowns and four interceptions and completed 64.6 percent of his passes. He has also rushed for 110 yards and two scores on 37 attempts. He currently ranks third in the league in total offense at 288.6 yards per game.

His rushing numbers aren’t staggering, but he certainly has the ability to make plays with his legs. Mond has passed and rushed for a touchdown in the same game 10 times in his career at A&M, which is more than any other starting quarterback in the SEC at their current institution.

“He’s a good QB,” McKinney said of Mond. “He can throw, he can scramble, he can make plays on his feet, he can extend the plays. I’ve always thought he was a good QB. I’ve watched his other games. He has his moments where he might struggle a little bit, but I think every QB has those moments where they struggle. But I feel with him, he always plays well, and he never is afraid to not throw the ball. He’ll keep throwing it no matter if he’s having a bad day or a good one.

“So, we definitely respect him and we know what he can do.”

The last time Alabama and Texas A&M played, Mond rushed for 98 yards and a touchdown. His 98 yards on the ground are the second-most in his career. Coming off a game where Plumlee saw success running the football, keeping contain on the Aggies’ quarterback will be key.

“We didn’t keep the quarterback contained, we lost the quarterback a lot,” senior defensive end Raekwon Davis said. “And it will be the same this week if we don’t keep this quarterback in the pocket. Do our job or it’s going to be another problem. In the bye week, we worked a lot on attacking the pocket and keeping the quarterback inside.”

Davis said it boils down to everyone being on the same page and executing. Speaking to local reporters Monday, Saban elaborated on how the team approached containment in the bye week.

“It’s obviously something that we need to do better,” Saban said. “I think it’s player awareness. We certainly try to do those things on a daily basis and try to emphasize those things on a daily basis, but it still comes down to … players have to be disciplined in doing their job. If you’re a contain rusher, you’ve got to contain the quarterback. You can’t be coming underneath.

“You’ve got to keep the proper leverage on the guy, give the opportunity to push the pocket in the middle and that’s something that we definitely have focused on and need to improve on.”

No. 1 Alabama will face No. 24 Texas A&M on Oct. 12 at 2:30 p.m. CT in College Station, Texas.

LINK ] Alabama Football News Alabama’s meeting with TAMU is one for Christian Barmore to see action By Stephen M. Smith
quote:

Three offensive players exploded in Alabama’s win over Southern Mississippi.

The final result of 49-7 at Bryant-Denny Stadium in week four featured five touchdown passes from Tua Tagovailoa, a career performance from Henry Ruggs III (148 yards, two scores) and Najee Harris’ first 100-yard game at running back this season; however, the most entertaining moment happened with a few minutes left in regulation.

If he could be any recording music artist at the time, Rick Ross would have been the perfect character for him.

While he was on the sideline, one can probably think the song “Hold Me Back” was playing in his mind.

Christian Barmore
still had some anger symptoms, following a targeting call against him in the Crimson Tide’s previous matchup with South Carolina.

He was suspended the first half of the game and was antsy to get in.

At one point in the second half, just about every defensive player was huddled around Barmore.

Upon Nick Saban calling his name, the sideline erupted and the Philadelphia (Pa.) native attacked the first person he saw with bad intentions.

His tackle for loss had teammates hyped, coaches with jaws on the floor, and fans wondering ‘can we see him play more?’

The redshirt freshman brought the first sign of nastiness, aggression and just angry style of football from a defensive line that’s been seen thus far. He recorded three eye-popping tackles and despite leaving fans wanting more, Barmore didn’t see much action at all versus Ole Miss.

Listed at 6-foot-5 and 310 pounds, the four-star brings a presence that resembles former All-American defensive tackle, A’Shawn Robinson.

Robinson, who played from 2013-15, was imposing, mean and freakishly athletic for someone at 320 pounds on a 6-foot-4 frame.

Alabama is down LaBryan Ray (foot) and waiting on Raekwon Davis and Terrell Lewis to consistently put together strong games.

In facing an athletic quarterback like Kellen Mond, a quality offensive mind in Jimbo Fisher and the atmosphere that is Kyle Field for the Texas A&M Aggies, this is a game where Barmore could really feast on the defensive front.

Turnovers in critical moments have been a staple of the Alabama-Texas A&M game, since the Aggies joined the Southeastern Conference in 2012. Even with his ability to extend plays and make accurate throws, Mond has not fared well in situations where he is constantly pressured.

Barmore, who is tied for third on the team in quarterback hurries (two), can collapse the pocket from inside and has the motor at defensive end to frustrate. The Tide worked on communication and containing the quarterback during its bye week, and will continue the task this week.

Fans want to see Barmore on the field. Hopefully, he sees time on Saturday.

Tua Tagovailoa having outstanding season…again (Photo: Stuart McNair, 247Sports)
LINK ]Tua Tagovailoa Has Not Been Made Uncomfortable By Kirk McNair
quote:

Hypothetically, lock a millennial in a room with a rotary dial telephone, a manual typewriter, and a television set with no remote and there will be some discomfort.

A goal of college football defensive coordinators involves putting a different kind of pressure on opposing quarterbacks. Alabama Coach Nick Saban is wont to say that getting sacks isn’t what matters, that making the other quarterback uncomfortable is the goal. Texas A&M Coach Jimbo Fisher said this week that the key to beating Bama is to make Crimson Tide quarterback Tua Tagovailoa uncomfortable.

So far, Tagovailoa has looked as comfortable as a man in a Lazy Boy commercial in leading Alabama to a 5-0 record (2-0 in Southeastern Conference games) and the nation’s No. 1 ranking, and he’s considered the leader for this year’s Heisman Trophy.

This week he leads the Crimson Tide into College Station to take on the Aggies in a 2:30 p.m. CDT game that will be televised by CBS.

Tagovailoa already holds several Alabama passing records, adding to them this year as he has passed for a nation’s best 23 touchdowns. He is second in passing yardage with 1,718 yards as he has completed 113-148 passes for 76.4 percent success, and has not thrown an interception.

Tagovailoa discussing what makes a quarterback uncomfortable may be as hypothetical as the millennial in the room without his cell phone, etc., but he delivered as smoothly as a slant pass to one of his equally cool receivers.

“A lot of pressure,” he said. “There are different things coming out you. Hard to see sometimes. A lot of movement. When you have to move out of the pocket to see something.

“They say playing in the SEC is close to the NFL. can’t really tell. I wouldn’t be able to judge because I haven’t played in the NFL. But when something is open, it’s only open for so long. So if you have to move to buy time…once you get out you’ve got to start extending the play. You have to motion guys here, tell somebody to go down…make a play that way.”

On those occasions where Tagovailoa has had to leave the pocket and make plays, he has been exceptional, either taking advantage of a running lane or finding just the right spot to put the ball for his man to get it.

Making the decision to run is “usually it’s if you see an open lane. When they’re running two-man (split safeties) on defense, it's really hard for the defense to stop you, especially because they have no one spying. They're trying to get pressure on you, they're playing man in the back, two high safeties dropping out, if you vacate that entire middle with crossing routes and everybody crossing and clearing it out, it's hard (to defend against the quarterback run). You can't really do anything if you're a DC or a player, you just hope that you get enough pressure and your guys get to the quarterback in enough time. But it's really based off of feel."

More often, Tagovailoa makes the pass to an “open” man.

He said, “Open for me is someone who has at least a little bit (fingers about four inches apart)… I don’t even know how to explain that.”

Tagovailoa and his receivers work well together and he has the ability to anticipate where his man will be when the ball gets to a spot. “Depending on where the DB is,” he said.

“Sometimes the receiver just has to make plays, you know?”

LINK ]Paul Finebaum diagnoses Alabama's biggest flaw By Brad Crawford
quote:

It's difficult to determine a proverbial Achilles Heel when you're beating teams by an average of 37 points per game, but top-ranked Alabama needs to improve in one area and do so at a rapid rate to win a national championship this season, ESPN college football analyst Paul Finebaum says

Ranked behind Ohio State this week in Finebaum's own top four, the Crimson Tide rank sixth in total defense entering Saturday's game at nationally-ranked Texas A&M, a team led by dynamic dual-threat quarterback Kellen Mond.

"This is not a vintage Nick Saban defense and quite frankly, this is not even a good Alabama defense,” Finebaum said during Tuesday’s appearance on SportsCenter. “They’ve been pedestrian so far. You may have heard of the guys on the other side of the ball with Tua, Jeudy and Ruggs — the Alabama offense has been spectacular, but the defense has lost some of its best players including Dylan Moses, their captain, and has not looked good.

"I think they could be gashed a little bit in College Station this weekend."

Finebaum stopped short of predicting a Texas A&M upset,

Containing mobile quarterbacks in the past have caused issues at times for Alabama's defense under Saban due to substitution challenges and a dual-threat's ability to shake tackles. The Crimson Tide surrendered 109 yards rushing a touchdown to Ole Miss signal caller John Rhys Plumlee last time out during a 59-31 win.

Plumlee danced around the pocket, was able to move the chains several times with his feet and hurt Alabama through the air with two touchdown passes. The game was out of reach when those scores occurred, but don't tell Saban that.

"(Stopping the quarterback) is obviously something that we need to do better," Saban said this week. "I think it’s player awareness. We certainly try to do those things on a daily basis and try to emphasize those things on a daily basis, but it still comes back to that same word that we talked about earlier. Players have to be disciplined in doing their job.

"If you’re a contain rusher, you’ve got to contain the quarterback. You can’t be coming underneath. You’ve got to keep the proper leverage on the guy. Give the opportunity to push the pocket in the middle That’s something that we definitely have focused on and need to improve on."

Alabama used its bye week to fine tune some things defensively and get everyone on the same page.

"I think the No. 1 thing that we need to focus on at this point in the season is our quality of play," Saban said. "And that really starts with the discipline that every player has to make the right choices and decisions relative to what he has to do his job and play winning football."

Alabama is a 18.5-point favorite in Saturday's game as Saban tries to continue his perfect career mark vs. former assistants turned head coaches against Jimbo Fisher.

Injury/practice report: Alabama gearing up for No. 24 Texas A&M by Christopher Walsh
quote:

Intensity kicks up as Crimson Tide works in full pads to face Aggies

TUSCALOOSA, Ala. — Reporters got a good look at a quarterback containment drill as Alabama continued to prep to visit Texas A&M on Saturday.

The drill was under the direction of outside linebackers coach Sal Sunseri, with the first-team foursome of Terrell Lewis, Raekwon Davis, D.J. Dale and Anfernee Jennings. Although Lewis (knee) and Dale (ankle/foot) are coming off injuries, neither seemed to be limited.

Let's just say Sunseri was in a no-nonsense mood and overall there was a notable increase in intensity during the media viewing periods.

Conditions were sunny and 78 degrees. The forecast for College Station on Saturday are partly cloudy and 72 degrees.

There was no change with the first-team offensive line from the bye week, with Landon Dickerson at center and Deonte Brown at right guard. The second-team line had on the left side Scott Lashley, Emil Ekiyor Jr. and Darrian Dalcourt.

Senior Matt Womack
appeared to be held out of contact drills.

Of note, Kendall Randolph went through individual drills as a guard, but was wearing his No. 85 jersey to line up as a tight end.

True freshman defensive end Byron Young has been getting first-team reps alongside Dale and Davis during the observation periods this week.

There was no change with the dime package from the Ole Miss game. Sophomore reserve cornerback Josh Jobe has been practicing this week with a cast on his left hand.

Safety Xavier McKinney told reporters on Tuesday that his thumb was "better."

“It just got a little banged up, but it wasn’t nothing where I couldn’t play, so, of course, I played through that.”

Junior wide receiver Henry Ruggs III helped lead his position group through drills, in his usual spot.

LINK ]A few notes from Alabama’s 2nd practice of Texas A&M week By Michael Casagrande | mcasagrande@al.com
quote:

On a pleasant afternoon in Tuscaloosa, preparations continued for Saturday’s trip to Texas A&M. It was a nice 78 degrees and sunny when Alabama took the field.

A few notes from the media viewing period:

-- It was clear Alabama is cautious of Aggie QB Kellen Mond’s speed to get to the corner. The front four of the defense was doing a drill we hadn’t seen before using two scout-team players running to the break the contain and get to the edge. Senior walk-on Jalen Jackson got most of those reps playing Mond, sprinting over and over to the edge. When it was over, he was beyond gassed.

-- Looking at the offensive line, Landon Dickerson remains taking the first-team reps at center with starter Chris Owens questionable for Saturday. Freshman Darian Dalcourt was the second-team center.

-- Deonte Brown is back in the starting group at right guard in the position occupied by Dickerson before he slid over. Brown was a starter last year who was suspended the first four games of this season. (Corrected from earlier version that stated Brown was at tackle).

-- It looked like Henry Ruggs was moving well after leaving the Ole Miss game with a hip pointer. He was leading the receivers line in one of the drills, sprinting to the middle of the field to make a catch. Ruggs was limited in practice last week.

-- D.J. Dale also looked healthy working with the first group on the defensive line. He was also limited in the open week.

-- The first group on the defensive front was Dale in the middle, flanked by ends Raekwon Davis and freshman Byron Young. It was the second time Young was with the first group after being spotted there Monday too.

-- Justin Eboigbe, the starter in the past two games, is on the second team along with Phidarian Mathis and Tevita Musika. The third wave included Christian Barmore, Braylen Ingraham and Stephon Wynn.

Cant wait for a half-full University of Phoenix Stadium as the Tide play the Tigers.

They need to move the Fiesta to Vegas because that location sucks. Its expensive to fly into, the least exciting NY6 city, and the closest Playoff contender this year is 15 hours away in Norman Oklahoma. USC is the only conceivable future playoff participant that Phoenix is a convenient trip for.

But that’s the thing. Almost every legit playoff contender will want Atlanta. Utah, Oregon, and maybe Oklahoma, depending on their opponent, are the only exceptions

I am really excited to see how the OL looks with Leatherwood, Neal, Dickerson, Brown and Wills out there. I think that’s out most physical 5. I wouldn’t mind, assuming they play as well as I think, if that became the starting 5 going forward.
