Have the 10 years since he left been any better? We have made the tournament twice.

Grant and Avery failing has nothing to do with Gottfried.

Just because he left here doesn't mean you have to think he was a terrible coach. He had a good run here as a coach, and was a good player here. I have no hard feelings towards Gottfried.

And are you under the impression that he left because he felt like it?
The only thing Gottfried was good at was conning good high school basketball player into joining his team until they realized he was conning them and they left.

I wish we could find another coach as terrible then if that's the case.
I'd take making the NCAAT 5 years in a row with an elite 8 appearance over what we have done since then any day.

You say he was a terrible coach, if he was terrible then what do you call what we have done since then?
He went on to make two sweet sixteens in 4 years after he left here fwiw. How many sweet sixteens have we made since Gottfried?

Well whether you like Gottfried or not, it's a fact that he had a 12 season run where he made the NCAAT 9 times, went to two sweet sixteens and an elite 8 and I would happily take that from Nate Oats in the next 12 years. I think anyone who says they wouldn't be happy with that would be lying considering how our last 12 years have gone.

If we had kept Gottfried longer could he have went on a 4 year streak similar to what he did at NC State with four tournament appearances and two sweet sixteens in the next four years? If we had kept him 6 more years would we have had more success than we had in those 6 years without him where we made the NCAA tournament once and got beat in the first round?

Gottfried's last 2+ seasons we were just bad. It was time for a divorce - for everybody.
The trend lines were awful and they weren't gonna improve. Same style he ran before but with bad talent. He needed a fresh start.

I am just surprised he didn't have a longer leash than getting fired after two bad years after having 5 good ones. The golf course thing had to have had a big part in it, or there was more behind the scenes.

You clearly don't remember the last few seasons he was here if you have to ask this. That death spiral was inescapable and we all knew it.

I was pretty young when he was the coach, I watched the games but wasn't as into it as I am now, that's mainly why I am asking. Just looking at what he did here, then firing him and seeing what he did at NC State afterwards compared to how we did afterwards, we looked pretty stupid for firing him on the surface.
I remember us being pretty good most years under him and pretty terrible ever since he was fired.

His Guard recruiting was awful his last few years. Mykal Riley was good but we wasn’t gonna win shite with Mikhail Torrance, Anthony Brock, and Brandon Hollinger. Scenario Hillman was an AMAZING dunker but he couldn’t shoot(he was worse than Herb Jones IMO)and neither could Alonzo Gee. Rico Pickett was decent but left after a year. Just bad Guards.

He also has NC State staring down the barrel of serious sanctions. He even got slapped with failure to monitor his program.

Pretty crazy that they are gonna get hammered and LSU is looking like they are going to Skate.
Really it just probably shows how slow the NCAA moves, that NC State stuff happened back in 2016 and they didn't get the notice of allegations til 2019. Hopefully LSU's is coming down the line.

He inherited a decent roster at NC State then landed a couple of good recruiting classes. Like I've been saying, he is 1000% reliant on signing elite talent that comes in and immediately plays like it. If he doesn't get that for a couple of years he's fricked. His teams bleed transfers and he doesn't develop players. A couple of years without a major influx of talent leaves his teams with a couple of good upperclassmen and zero depth. Same deal at Alabama and NC State.

I still vividly remember Hillman and another player laughing while looking at the newspapers placed on the seats at the first game after he was fired. Front page had a picture of Gottfried with his face buried in his hands.
