Jake Coker, who will start Saturday if he does everything right, looked good Wednesday in preparation for Louisiana Monroe.

During the limited media viewing portion of practice, Coker made multiple strong, long throws to his receivers. Arm strength has never been a problem for the Florida State transfer and Wednesday only proved that. On one throw he found Calvin Ridley, who should inherit a bigger role with Robert Foster out, perfectly in stride. Whether it's the confidence in knowing he'll be the starter against ULM or what, Coker looked and acted like the guy.

--Derrick Henry missed practice due to tonsillitis.

--Blake Barnett again served as the scout team quarterback in preparation for Louisiana Monroe.

--A'Shawn Robinson and Jonathan Allen predictably were the first team guys working in a joint drill between defensive linemen and linebackers. After a good selection of reps, the duo switched with Da'Shawn Hand and Dalvin Tomlinson who were part of a group working off to the side with Bo Davis. Hand stepped up with a sack against Ole Miss and worked with the second team on Wednesday.

--A scout from the Miami Dolphins was in attendance. The sidelines were filled with guests for "Summer Job Appreciation."

Alabama's quarterback "controversy" isn't actually that much of a controversy—or, at least, it feels like it shouldn't be. Yet, head coach Nick Saban was tentative on naming Jake Coker the starter heading into the game against Louisiana-Monroe.

"At this point, providing he does the things he has to do, I think we'll start him in this game," Saban said (via Michael Casagrande, AL.com). Per John Talty of AL.com, Coker looked solid in the media's limited viewing of practice.

Saban threw a wrench in the quarterback pecking order by having Cooper Bateman trot on to the field first last week against Ole Miss, though Bateman was eventually replaced by Coker. Something unpredictable like that is about the only thing that should prevent Coker from being the presumed starter for Louisiana-Monroe.

Assuming Coker is the starter, will Saban stick with him for good?

ULM at Alabama

When: Saturday, Sept. 26; 4 p.m. ET

Last meeting: Louisiana-Monroe pulled off a 21-14 upset win at Alabama in November 2007 during Nick Saban's first season with the Crimson Tide.

What to watch for

Louisiana-Monroe (1-1) was off last week after posting a shutout win against Nicholls State. The Warhawks opened with a lightning-shortened 51-14 loss at Georgia in which they allowed 243 rushing yards to the Bulldogs.

Alabama (2-1) is dealing with the aftermath of its first home loss to Ole Miss in 27 years and the earliest loss in any season under Saban, and with that comes the inevitable questions about whether the Crimson Tide's run of being an elite team is over. In reality, it's more a matter of still having a lot of unanswered questions, particularly at the quarterback position. Jake Coker is not looking like the answer, while Cooper Bateman's shot to prove himself against the Rebels was short-lived.

There's also the issue of why offensive coordinator Lane Kiffin hasn't just leaned on Derrick Henry and Kenyan Drake and their running ability, as last week the Tide ran 42 times and passed on 58 occasions.

"Even though Alabama has already played three games this season, no one knows what kind of offense the Crimson Tide want to be, including the Crimson Tide," Bleacher Report's Christopher Walsh wrote.

Part of the reason for the pass-heavy play-calling against Ole Miss was Alabama's second-half deficit. The Tide will surely look to be more balanced against the Warhawks.

Alabama spreads out its non-league games for situations just like this, as well as to provide a buffer before big matchups such as the Oct. 3 trip to Georgia. With that in mind, expect more tinkering on offense but still plenty of production.

Prediction: Alabama 45, Louisiana-Monroe 10

Shameless thread plug, but we can probably put practice reports in the Season Thread. But maybe some people don't wanna use it.

I was proud of Jake last Saturday. Yeah he made some mistakes but he played his arse off. I still think he's dumb as a brick but he showed me that he can lead. Saban should name him the starter outright.

Why do people keep calling Coker dumb? I'm sure he doesn't have a very high football IQ, but that doesn't equate to dumb.

So he doesn't have a high football IQ although he plays the quarterback position in football. Interesting.

Honestly a majority of QBs on D1 rosters probably don't have a "high football IQ".

QBing at a high mental level is probably more complex than what most of us do

No it's not rocket science.

It's much much harder.

Launch the rocket - then do the science before it crashes would be the equivilant to football.
