Hopefully the return to ’normal’ will mean a return of the Alabama Crimson Tide Hockey club team. Their social media updates have been few and far between during the pandemic but their website is https://bamahockey.com and their fall schedule should be coming out in the not too distant future. It’s been a lot of fun and a relatively inexpensive night out for those within traveling distance to Pelham. Will plan to post here for those interested in following along. Roll Frozen Tide!

Danbury forward Oldham makes college commitment
“The Danbury Jr Hat Tricks of the NA3HL are very pleased to announce that forward Jake Oldham has committed to play ACHA Division I hockey for the University of Alabama in the fall of 2021.
The 5’9/165 lbs. native of Southbury, CT was an important part of the Jr Hat Tricks this season, He will join a Crimson Tide hockey program that competes at the Division I level in the American Collegiate Hockey Association.”
“Playing in Danbury this year was a blast and my time with the Jr Hat Tricks has better prepared me to continue my career at Alabama. I am very grateful that Coaches Cunningham and Allen gave me a chance to be a part of this team. Playing hockey at the University of Alabama has always been a dream of mine and I am looking forward to contributing to the Crimson Tide any way that I can,” said Oldham.
“Jake was an absolute pleasure to coach and have as a part of our program this season, He competes each and every day to be his best and challenges his teammates to do the same. Jake was a key part of of very successful penalty kill units all season, a fantastic presence on our forecheck and delivered some of the most memorable hits of our season. He also scored some big goals in the last few weeks of the season that helped us solidify our playoff positioning. Jake is a skilled player with the determination to succeed. He is also a tremendous teammate and I am very confident that he will make himself an indispensable part of the Alabama hockey program in no time. Congratulations to Jake and his family,” said Head Coach Kevin Cunningham.

First time in history that sentence has been spoken.
But here's to a great season!

Someone explain college hockey to me. This is "club" hockey which has nothing to do with the hockey they play at Michigan or Boston u. Nobody in the south plays at that level, correct?
Posted on 5/30/21 at 3:06 pm to RiverCityTider
Correct. UAHuntville was the only team in the south that played NCAA Hockey, but they just announced (again) they were dropping it.

Wow. That's interesting. How long did they play at that level and what went wrong? With no high school hockey, how did they figure on success?
Do you think Bama would ever go that route?
I remember the old WHA in Birmingham. In person, it is a very entertaining sport.

From the About Bama Hockey page:
The Alabama Hockey Club was founded in 2005 by the University of Alabama students. The team is now in its twelfth season and plays all of its home games in Pelham, AL at the Pelham Civic Complex. The organization is managed by the University of Alabama students.
The program elevated its status to ACHA Division I in 2015 and now competes at the highest level of ACHA college hockey. Alabama is one of two SEC schools to have a program competing at this level.

Here’s the link to the post on the announcement re: UAH Hockey. They can’t find a conference home which was a stipulation for the funding that was pledged to keep them going. UAH Suspends Hockey
It’s unfortunate. They started as Club, moved to NCAA Division I and dropped to Division II where they won the National championship. More on their history here.
“March 9, 1996: The Chargers earn their first NCAA Division II national championship and complete an undefeated season, finishing a sweep of Bemidji State with a 3-0 win”

That is amazing. I left the state 30 years ago and this UAH hockey adventure got past me.
I do hope they come back and build the program back. It was a very ballsy move to achieve that level of hockey competitiveness in the deep south. Sounds like they had decent fan support
I remember back in the day when the Bulls put 15k in the building.
Sounds like geography was the big impediment to finding a conference. Too bad there weren't a handful of other southern schools willing to play at that level so that rivalries could be established and a southern conference could be possible.
I also wish the Alabama team well and will try to start following them more closely.

Can’t keep up with which primary social media application they are using in any given year, but it appears the 2021-22 season is ramping up. I don’t Instagram but saw this linked from their web site (posted a few weeks ago):

Huntsvillian here and hockey ain't real without UAH.
The club team from the 70's and 80's were the truth.

The minor league team the Huntsville Channel Cats was really successful at the same time. They won 2 or 3 leagues championships, but still struggled with attendance, marketing and some mismanagement between owners. They still have a pro team, the Havoc, which has won a few league championships of its own.

Hockey would easily be one of the most popular sports on campus if the university would just support them and build them a place to play.

I remember back in the day when the Bulls put 15k in the building.
I was an usher while a student at UA. Saw a 17 year old Wayne Gretzky play. Eli Gold got his start in the state of Alabama doing Bulls broadcasts. He's better at hockey than football. The final year, the young kids were exciting to watch. We were able to watch some future greats. Michel Goulet was 18 years old...he's in the Hockey Hall of Fame. Rob Ramage was 19...he played on two Stanley Cup teams and was an NHL All-Star 4 times, also was a team captain in Montreal. Craig Hartsburg went on to be a team captain for Minnesota for seven seasons. Rick Vaive was the first Maple Leaf in team history to score 50 goals in a season. Pretty remarkable, considering Toronto is one of the six teams of the NHL that go back to 1917. He actually did it three times. All those guys were 18-19 years old at the time...too young to play in the NHL.
I really wish we could add another NCAA men's sport. This would be the one to add.
