Based on his tweets sounds like Tua has still looked better than Jalen, but that Jalen has shown improvement. Doesn’t sound like Jalen has done anything to start over Tua though.

Not really a fan of that stuff. I like the info but come back on. Saban needs to take phones when they enter. Hope Allen didnt have a serious ACL injury like he says.

When it comes to bama football, he is solid. Sometime he tweet too much politics stuff and makes it unbearable for folks to follow him.

I guess Tua and the offense is gonna have to carry us this year. Defense will be another 2014 type, top 10 but not nearly as dominate.

If our LB injury curse continues, we will need to find a defensive scheme that doesn’t require LBs.

Christian Miller is gonna have to step up his game.
Ive still not seen him play up too what 24 closed out the year doing.
But I expect jennings,,Eyabi Anoma,LaBryan Ray along with moses getting pressure on the QB..
But depth wise somebody likes J.Parks is gonna have to develop quickly playing a few snaps to give starters some breaks.
What I am hoping for is MacMillion and Moody to give support in the middle to allow Moses,
like Evans last year some pass rush series.
As Ive constantly stated I expect Moody to shock plenty people with his play.

Don't forget about Buggs. He's one of our best returning pass rushers. Not an edge guy, but still.

I think Raekwon Davis/Isaiah Buggs/LaBryan Ray/Quinnen Williams will all prove formidable as interior rushers and by pushing the pocket make life easier for our edge rushers that do play. The problem is we've lost our two primary backups at Outside Linebacker and you've gotta figure Jennings and Miller will not be able to play every single down of a tight 4 quarter game and have the energy left late in the game to get off the ball and turn the corner on 3rd down. Need guys to step up big time. Anoma has all the tools, but with little football experience it's gonna be hard for him to consistently play anything other than 3rd down, and even then you gotta wonder how well he'll do if it's a screen or a draw or something where he can't just put a hand in the dirt and harass the QB.

Saban discusses injuries:

LINK ]Alabama LB 'probably out for the season' with knee injury (BamaOnLine)

quote:

Alabama head coach Nick Saban announced Saturday that sophomore outside linebacker Christopher Allen will likely miss the 2018-19 season with a knee injury. “Surgical knee injury,” Saban said. “He’s probably out for the season.”

Last season, Allen saw time in seven games during his freshman campaign. He totaled six tackles with one tackle for loss and added a pair of quarterback hurries and one forced fumble.

That makes two Crimson Tide linebackers set to miss extensive time because of knee injuries. Junior outside linebacker Terrell Lewis also tore his right ACL during an offseason workout.

“That’s unfortunate that we have two of those now at the same position, both guys that have made a contribution to our team,” Saban said. “We don’t have enough depth, especially on defense to be able to afford to lose those kind of players.

“... We basically have Anfernee Jennings and Christian Miller, who have been starters around here. Past that, we have Ben Davis and (three) freshmen. That’s basically what we have. If we had more inside linebackers, Joshua McMillon could play the position, but I’m not sure we could afford to move him. So, we’re very thin at those two positions right now.”

Saban also confirmed BamaOnLine’s report that offensive tackle Matt Womack suffered a foot injury during Thursday’s preseason practice. The coach provided more details on the injury.

Matt Womack, obviously, had a foot fracture last year and it was totally healed,” Saban said. “He actually stepped on somebody’s foot and fractured his foot again. So, he’s going to be out for, I don't know, probably anywhere from 4-6 weeks.”

Allen, Womack and running back Najee Harris were not present during the one media viewing period of pre-scrimmage drills Saturday. Harris is dealing with a minor foot injury, Saban said earlier this week, but the sophomore’s setback is not believed to be long-term.

Defensive lineman Stephon Wynn (ligament strain) watched his teammates scrimmage in street clothes. Linebacker Jamey Mosley (shoulder) and safety Daniel Wright (shoulder) dressed out, and Wright was able to participate in the second scrimmage of the preseason.

Daniel Wright scrimmaged today in a black jersey. But he scrimmaged, he got a lot of reps,” Saban said. “Jamey Mosley has been practicing some but no contact. His position is not really one that you can play without contact, so he didn’t scrimmage today but we feel like he’ll be back on the field and able to do some things next week.”

Alabama will have Sunday off and return to the practice field Monday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m.

LINK ]Nick Saban rants over depth concerns on Alabama's defense (BOL | embedded video)

quote:

All offseason long, Nick Saban has said his No. 1 concern has been the lack of experience on defense, especially among Alabama’s second- and third-team defenses. Asked about the depth after Saturday’s second scrimmage of fall camp, Saban went on a mini-rant.

“I've been concerned about this all along, so I don't even know why you would ask the question,” Saban said. “You just think whatever happens, we just shite another player. Everything is going to be perfect. All of our fans think that, you think that. That's what you write about. That's the message that you send out there. Yeah, I worry about it all the time. I may be the only one, but I do worry about it. So, I'm very worried about it.”

Eight members of UA’s 2017 defense were drafted in the seven rounds of the 2018 NFL Draft, including three first-rounders, while two more defenders were signed as undrafted free agents.

The Crimson Tide returns only three defensive starters from its title-winning team in linebacker Anfernee Jennings and defensive linemen Raekwon Davis and Isaiah Buggs. The three returning starters are the fewest in the SEC and tied for the fewest among Power 5 teams, along with NC State, Penn State and Indiana. Only one FBS team returns less (UConn, 2).

There are talented players set to step into starting roles, but they leave voids in terms of the depth that will need to be filled by young players -- and in most cases, it will be up to true freshmen.

Alabama’s depth also took a hit this week when outside linebacker Christopher Allen suffered a “surgical knee injury” that will likely force the sophomore him to miss the entire 2018-19 season.

“Every team has problems,” Saban said. “Look, how you manage problems, the discipline that you have to go about trying to help players improve and get better so they can have a role on the team, that's the most important thing we can do as coaches, aight.

“So, we don't have an opportunity to get any more players right now. I trust and believe in the players that we have and we just have to get them better. They don't have a lot of experience. They're young players. We just have to get them to understand what it takes to get them to go out there and play with consistency.”

Alabama has to replace multiple starters on the defensive side of the football, including two starting inside linebackers, two starting defensive linemen and every player in the secondary.

After Saturday’s second and final preseason scrimmage, Saban was also asked about the young players in the Crimson Tide’s secondary, to which he said they “didn’t play well today.”

“They gave up a lot of big plays and made a lot of mental errors,” he said. “I'm not pointing out anybody or anything, but we need to do better. We need to play better as a group. We have some individuals that are playing well and some guys that need to play with a lot more discipline, eye control and understand what they do.

“They're young players, I believe in them. I have a lot of confidence that we can get them where they need to be, but they need to realize they have a lot of things to work on, and that's something that we definitely want to get back at. These guys that work really, really hard, I think sometimes when things go fast out there, it's hard for them to figure it out and then they don't play with a lot of confidence and focus. That just goes with being a young player. We'll keep working with those guys and go from there.”

Alabama will have Sunday off and return to the practice field Monday, Aug. 20, at 2:30 p.m.

LINK ]Alabama Coach Nick Saban Gets Some Satisfaction From Scrimmage (BamaOnLine)

quote:

That’s a wrap on preseason full scrimmage practice days. Going into Saturday’s second and final scrimmage of Alabama fall football camp (though with another week to go before Bama starts game preparation for Louisville), Crimson Tide Coach Nick Saban had previewed the general hopes he had for the Bryant-Denny Stadium work.

Those were it being “game-like” insofar as smooth substitution patterns and special teams work and having coaches handling communications from the press box. But he also wanted to “let the players play,” and for them to do things when the coaches weren’t right beside them telling them what to do.

And, of course, it was the last scrimmage with the season-opener against Louisville in Orlando on Sept. 1, two weeks away, and perhaps the last chance for some players to make an impression.

That’s important because, as Saban has said in the past, at some point decisions have to be made on which players will get preparation for the opening game.

Saturday’s scrimmage was a bit late starting because of a downpour, but as older Alabama fans from the Paul Bryant Era will testify, it doesn’t rain on the Crimson Tide.

As is usual, there were few specifics revealed by Saban following the scrimmage. Don’t look for statistics. (And, yes, there were plenty of unofficial reports, some verified by Bama’s head coach. Although the scrimmage, as always, was advertised as closed there were a number of followers there, including former players and Red Elephant Club members.)

Just jumping to Saban’s summation, he said, “Overall, I'm pleased with the improvement we made. I'm far from satisfied with where our team is. We've got a lot of work to do."

About as specific as it gets, he said, “The No. 1 thing, which was the focus after the last scrimmage, was to be able to make some significant improvement from week one to week two.

“I certainly saw a lot of areas where we were able to do that.

“We made a lot more explosive plays today, were a lot more consistent on offense. Took care of the ball pretty well, both quarterbacks (Tua Tagovailoa and Jalen Hurts) played well.”

On the other hand, he said, “I thought the tackling was not as crisp as it needs to be on defense, and we continue to make probably more mental errors than we're going to be able to tolerate. We're continuing to work with guys. Working together and communicating is going to be really, really important.

"We had a couple two-minute situations at the end of the game that we were successful at. I thought the specialists did fairly well today. Each of them had maybe one play they wished they had back. I was really pleased with that as well.

"I think the big message is, the things that we focused on and the things that we worked on, we made improvement on. The things that we don't pay attention to detail on, people trying to get the ball out, breaking the ball out, ball security, those types of things that we really make a great emphasis on, we need continue to create more turnovers on defense. I thought we did a pretty good job of taking care of the ball today on offense.”

That, of course, is one of the conundrums of a team working against itself. It cannot look good on offense if it turns the ball over, although that makes the defense look good. And if the offense has good ball security, the defensive side is criticized for not getting takeaways.

Saban didn’t point any fingers at individuals, but said the secondary “didn’t play well today. They gave up a lot of big plays and made a lot of mental errors. We need to do better, play better as a group.

“We have some individuals that are playing well and some guys that need to play with a lot more discipline, eye control, and understand what they do.”

Alabama lost six regulars from the secondary from last year’s national championship team, and even before the Tide started fall camp Saban had said that young players had to be counted on for depth in the defensive backfield.

“They are young players,” Saban said. “I believe in them. I have a lot of confidence that we can get them where they need to be, but they need to realize they have a lot of things to work on.

“I think sometimes when things go fast out there, it's hard for them to figure it out and then they don't play with a lot of confidence and focus. That just goes with being a young player.

“We'll keep working with those guys and go from there."

Bama has one of the best training staffs there is, we just have had terrible luck with injuries at the LB position. The players aren’t robots, there is no way to totally prevent injuries.
