Neither is the president. In fact, every day I'm watching in amazement at this dude purposely spitting in the wind. So many politicians and regular folks fighting biology on their terms. My money is on biology.

Why not? Genuine question. I would like to understand why some people are so against it.
There are several studies that show mask wearing greatly reduces the risk of transmission. Unless you have a medical condition that is worsened by wearing a mask, wearing one to the store or other indoor public areas really doesn't seem like much of a burden.

Very simple. You are prolonging something that isn't necessary. Have only worn one when a business requires. I'm not living my life scared like some of you. Turn off the TV and social media. You do realize a lot of these positive cases are being found because businesses test everyone. Deaths are still declining. I can't say it enough. Stop falling for the fear mongering media. You see where it is getting this country.

Thanks for the reply.
I think there is a big difference in "falling for the fear mongering media" and wearing a mask inside a grocery store.
I'm personally not scared of the virus, if I get it I will likely be fine. But not everyone is so lucky. So if I can reduce my chances of spreading it to others pre-sympotmatically or asymptomatically by wearing a mask, I'm going to do so. I guess to each their own.

And I understand your point of view, but trust me you will be wearing that mask into November.
Why? The media and media doctors will tell you so.

I might be, but it won't be because of the media. I haven't watched cable news in years.
I do have twitter, but not going to base any decisions off of it. My decision to wear a mask is based on the medical studies I have read.

I won’t wear a mask because I don’t like things on my face. If I catch it, then I catch it, but I won’t be wearing a mask. I believe we’ll all end up catching it eventually anyway.

But the main benefit comes from protecting others.

Others should wear a mask if they are concerned about catching it.

Ok, but that's still not really my point.
A mask reduces my chances of catching it a little, but it reduces my chances of unintentionally spreading it even more. It's not about protecting myself.

The mask does much more to prevent the person wearing it from spreading Covid than it does to protect the mask wearer from catching it.
Not telling people what to do but the "old and at risk people should wear a mask" sentiment is the exact opposite of the science.
The old and at risk people are much more protected if those around them in stores wear masks than they are by wearing one themselves.
But to each their own I suppose.

My point is, if you are scared of catching it or spreading it, then by all means, wear a mask or just stay home. I’m not going to wear a mask. If people don’t want to walk near me because I’m not wearing a mask, then that’s perfect for me. I’d like everyone to stay 20 feet away instead of 6, just to be safe.

Just cough a few times and they'll keep their distance.

Until it is mandated and like what is happening here. Now in some of the cities here a mask is required at all times while in public. They are issuing tickets up to $500 per offense now. I even saw where someone wore their mask inside the grocery store but took it off in the parking while loading their groceries into the car and got a ticket.

I just won’t go to the cities that mandate it. Birmingham had/has mandates and I just didn’t shop in the city limits. If all cities near me put mandates down, then I’m screwed a little, but I don’t believe that will happen. I don’t know anyone who wears a mask, including my elderly relatives

I think just as we have a responsibility to take precautions to keep us from catching it, we have some responsibility to take precautions to keep us from spreading it.
So yes, people can choose to not walk within 6 feet of someone not wearing a mask, but we can also choose to make a little sacrifice (wearing a mask in a store is minimal sacrifice) to do our part to protect vulnerable individuals.
I guess I just don't really understand the attitude of "I'm not vulnerable, so it's not my problem."

I think most people feel this way.
We unfortunately have a lot of selfish assholes in this world as well though.

Agreed. In my grocery store yesterday (Overton Rd. Publix) the large majority of folks were masked. And those that weren't were keeping their distance respectfully.
Posted on 6/23/20 at 1:34 pm to gumpinmizzou
Must be nice. Most of the non-employees at the Publix near my house do not wear masks. It had been about 1 to 3 masked to unmasked until the last few weeks and now it has gotten to where I am one of only 3 or 4 non-employees wearing one. I feel bad for the people working there because as has already been discussed the masks are meant to prevent spread from you not to you. Fortunately most of them are relatively young, although there is one nice older lady who works in the deli that I worry about.
