I don't think there's anyway they can push it back the start date without receiving backlash. We're going to go through a few years of playing in an eye sore at Coleman, and the renderings are going to be put up on graphics and tv for everyone to see. The coaches are going to start using it as a pitch for recruits and the fans are starting to buy back into the program.
Not saying it couldn't happen, but Byrne doesn't seem like the guy that would back out of this.

Golf is getting either $3 or $5 million for renovations, softball is getting another $3-$5 million for renovations, the Mal Moore facility is getting upgrades to the football locker rooms, upgrades to the recruiting areas, a 2 story sports science building is going up there as well. I would imagine about half of the $600 million is going to go into BDS. Football is ALWAYS going to be the tail that wags the dog! The bread winner! It is that way at even the middle school and HS levels. Football supports all of the other sports and especially the non-revenue ones.

Everyone knows this, but some schools, such as Auburn with their basketball arena, take some of that money to support the other programs. Coleman is the worst venue in the SEC and has been for a while now. No one is arguing that football isn't the breadwinner. As you said that is the case everywhere, yet we have had one of the most profitable college sports programs of all-time for over a decade now and still one of the shittiest basketball arenas among power 5 schools.

Byrne just said on the radio every seat will be at least 42ft closer to the court.
Posted on 8/17/18 at 8:29 am to BigBird09
It's complete bullshite that they are spending millions on an unnecessary renovation to BDS before fixing Coleman.

Also he said the seats will be steeper and more on top of the action.
And he said they are saving $70 million by just doing a renovation

I don't think that's possible.

Lol, I meant every front row seat.

Our AD was just on wjox. He said it would cost 70 million more to tear down and rebuild. GB said the seating will be much steaper, and said the worst seat would be 42 ft closer to the court. As far as timing, he said you have to have an economic model that works. None of the season ticket holders will lose their seat, but they have not got into where they will be.

That's more likely.

Sell the naming rights and let's build a new one.

The renovation looks good. It includes everything you have asked for PVille.
Coleman already has really nice basketball and gymnastics practice facilities in it as well.

Did Byrne say how long it will take to complete the new Coleman? The thought just crossed my mind that maybe the reason we're doing it after 21-22 season is that we'll have to play a season with the home games at the BJCC and have to wait until the interstate is done.

I read where they’d like to see how much they could get done in 10 months. We’d play on the road at the end of our SEC schedule in the 2021-22 season and a few games at the beginning of the 2022-23 season.

He hopes to start construction immediately after the season ends, and only have to play the 1st part of the following season elsewhere.

I think that the administration was slow to move on a total renovation on Coleman was because of all of the renovation they poured into the basketball and gymnastics practice facilities during that time span. Just a guess.
I agree that it is a shitty place to watch a game!! Those corner seats are awful!!!

The late start to Coleman makes me pause. I think there is a real possibility Bryne actually wants a new arena/alternative upgrades. As in Bryne is trying to buy time
Hypothetically, say Greg really does want a new arena but is having issues maybe with land availability, booster support or getting BoT support. The AD can't delay this whole AD wide campaign just for bball and they can't announce major upgrades for everything except for bball facilities.
By putting the reno date years into the future though, it gives the AD a ton of flexibility to change course and do something else, like change a reno into a new arena.

In addition to my above comment, letting the idea of a renovation simmer for 3 years is a smart way to get the pro new arena crowd motivated to do something about it (aka open up the checkbooks)
I have an extremely high opinion of Bryne based on references from former colleagues of his. Whatever he decides to do with basketball, it probably is going to be done very well either way

I don't think he'd go on the radio and tout the renovation and how much better it is cost wise if he wanted a new arena.

I think the big sticking point was going to be cutting into the practice for basketball and gymnastics. Doing the reno at The Joe for baseball killed practice time and availability. Do it this way and don't touch the practice facilities and keep everything as close to normal as possible.
