If Petty and Mack both are consistent, we’ll be better than last year

I might puke if I have to watch another performance like the UCF game last year. Really hoping Petty gets over his road jitters and Herb has been practicing his shooting

Well we play UCF on the road this year, and UCF is supposed to be better this year. Better hope “Road John Petty” doesn’t show up

Good NBA Summer League debut for former Alabama player Collins Sexton: 15 points, 6-for-6 from the line, 7 boards despite aggravating ankle injury. Cavs won 72-59

The Hawks really screwed themselves.

Don't remind me. Been a Hawks fan and looking for a good reason to bail on them for 20 years. After that draft trade and Collin Sexton getting drafted, the switch may be imminent.

Herbert can shoot. His assigned role was mostly defensive, sacrificing his offensive numbers for other scorers. Also, like so many before him, he is adjusting to SEC talent. His scoring will grow. Ask the NBA scouts.

Yeah, I have been a casual Hawks fan for years, but this latest draft has pretty much killed any of the tepid loyalty I still had to the franchise. I could be completely wrong, but I think Doncic and Sexton are going to be stars and Young is going to be a megabust.

but this latest draft

The Omari Spellman pick could be amazing if they get him off the Jenarcus Russell diet

Hawks have some 5 RD1 picks in the next 3 years I think though. Even if Trae Young is a bust, they've set themselves up for many more chances to hit gold

Plus they have a great cap situation which is a huge advantage

I love the Volkswagens talent ceiling, but this is a terrible take

Last season, the VW was a limited offensive option because he had a raw, unrefined skillsst and was a horrific shooter both spot up, FT + finishing

Herbie showed flashes of elite potential, but he has a long development road to get to that level next season

Agreed. I dont buy the defensive role thing. He was not a good shooter last year.

From yesterday

quote:

Indiana 96, San Antonio 76. Levi Randolph – 14 minutes, 7 points (3-6 FG, 1-2 FT), 2 rebounds, 1 foul.

quote:

Chicago 86, Cleveland 81. Collin Sexton – 29 minutes, 14 points (6-15 FG, 2-6 FT), 2 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 1 turnover, 4 fouls.

Collin shot a couple of those free throws immediately after hitting his funny bone and losing feeling in his right (shooting) hand. He shot one with the numb hand and missed. Then shot the next one left handed and missed. His FTs usually aren’t bad

Free agents avoid Atlanta like the plague. It's the NBA party city and they don't want to lose that road trip away from their wives and girlfriends.

Unconfident freshman shooter is a more appropriate label. Shooting was considered his greatest strength coming out of HS, and his form is very solid. Jones just needs confidence and that's what a lot of these NBA Draft analysts are expecting to see more of this year with these first round projections. If his shooting doesn't improve to 35+% on good volume, I don't see him as a first rounder even in this terrible upcoming draft class.

Yea, except next years draft is looking like a few possible stars and a bunch of league average type players. And, with what we did this year, I have no doubt we'll continue down the Wal Mart Warriors path. Our best hope is the Mavs protected pick gets released to us in a few years when the high school kids are back in the draft.

The Hawks cycle into the great cap situation once every 5 years. Then, we remember that the Hawks haven't signed an elite level free agent since Dikembe. They've signed some under the radar guys that ended up being very good players (Joe Johnson, the entire Danny Ferry/Bud class), but the Hawks just don't sign elite players. Dudes don't want to live in the city they play in (see chicks, side). Jalen Rose forever nailed the Atlanta basketball free agent problem years ago.

As a Hawks fan I have finally come to accept that the best I can hope for is a fun team that plays hard and gives me some joy. I don't actually ever expect to be a team with a legitimate championship hope, because that's literally never going to happen. Hopefully Tre becomes a great passer and streaky good shooter, Pierce proves to be competent and we can build around that with some fun teams that gives the Celtics and Sixers fits over the next decade. However, I highly doubt it.

I don't disagree, but that doesn't change that he was a very poor shooter last season

quote:

Really? I just looked up his Maxprep HS stats and...

- 70% FT, 72% SR 68% JR seasons
- 31% 3FG shooter, ~1 3FGM /game (29% SR, 34% JR)
- 48% 2FG Shooter both seasons

his form is very solid

quote:

Jones just needs confidence

Don't disagree. He just needs a lot of extra off hours shooting work

quote:

I disagree. Herb has poor man's Kawhi Leonard written all over him if he can fill out a legit 6'7+ height 7'+wing measurement and improve inside the paint offensive /rebounding

As long as he shows some type 3FG improvement while FT% gets 75+%, some team is going to see the upside potential. You don't find 6'7+ wings, comfortable w/ the ball who can guard the 1-4 very often

Yea, Herb was an incredibly raw offensive player last year who scored mainly based on instincts and skill at the rim. He was not a good shooter. At all. He could be, and I expect him to be better, but he wasn't last year.

He didn't have much skill at the rim. He was like a 41% 2FG shooter in conference play

Ya, this isn't some knock on the Volkswagen. If anything, it should make people excited just how much better he could be
