I think I went into a lot more depth about this at some point during the season last year. But, in short, I'm hoping for the best, but I have my doubts about Avery. This years team has a lot of potential, but I'm going to temper my excitement for now.

I am happy with Avery. Give him two more years to establish an identity for the program and then if that does not give us a consistent exciting winner it might be time for a change. If he can recruit at a high level in-state and from nearby metros like Atlanta,New Orleans,Memphis we will have a top program with a few championships thrown in.
Will be very surprised if he cannot achieve this. Absolutely behind Avery till then.

Maybe you're right, but right now, this is a harsh judgement to make of Avery. All three years here his team has met or exceeded realistic expectations in terms of how far they got in the tournament or how close they got to making it.

I want more for us as well, but I think it'd be ridiculous for us to fire a coach who makes the tournament regularly. We've been on too long a drought recently to make that move. Right now the coach also has to deal with having one of the worst stadiums in the P5.

ESPN way too early 2019 draft has Herb Jones at #17

I love Herb's raw abilities but he'll have to show a bit more on the offensive end to be drafted right outside the lottery. However, he was a raw true freshman, so it's definitely there in front of him next year.

If he can get to 35% from 3 and get strong enough to finish around the rim it's definitely possible.

Coach Avery did an interview with Wimp and Barry this morning. He said Greg Byrne will announce our arena plans at the appropriate time, but it seemed like Avery knew already 100% what’s gonna happen. He kept talking about a renovation and said that we won’t recognize the inside of Coleman after it. He also talked about our non-conference schedule and said it’ll be as tough as last year and should be announced in the next week or two. The final thing that really stood out to me was he sort of compared Tevin Mack to the elite shooters that Villanova had last year.

Who all do we have lined up non conference that’s announced so far? It doesn’t sound like it would be as hard off the cuff. Murray State, Arizona, @Baylor, @UCF and who else?

I think that's all we know for sure so far. We also know we're going to be in the Charleston Classic which will be three games from App State, Ball State, Northeastern, Wichita State, Davidson, Purdue, and Virginia Tech.

Our OOC schedule actually ended up less impressive than we had hoped last season. Under the new quadrant system, I like games like @UCF. A team just has to be in the top 135 of RPI to be a Q2 win on the road.

Quadrant 1
Rhode Island
@Arizona

Quadrant 2
BYU (N)
Oklahoma
Texas

Quadrant 3
Memphis (N)
Lipscomb
UT-A
Minnesota (N)
UCF
Mercer (N)

Quadrant 4
Louisiana Tech
Alabama A&M

Using last year's final RPIs:

Q1
Arizona
@Baylor
Davidson (N) (almost Q2 at 47 in RPI)
Wichita State (N)
Purdue (N)

Q2
Murray State
@UCF (almost Q1 at 84 in RPI)
Virginia Tech (N)
Northeastern (N) (almost Q1 at 57 in RPI)

Q3
Ball State (N)

Q4
App State (N)

I think that's the path to being better this year: shooting. Adding Tevin Mack and Riley Norris to a team with a more experienced Petty, Reese and Jones (he was considered a good shooter out of HS) should make this a team that is much better shooting the ball. Butler's biggest strength is shooting so that can only help too should he play this year.

I like your thoughts. Also, I would like to see less Avery jr.... I think once he is gone, Sr.'s job gets easier. Who knows what kind of pressure he is getting from his wife? Just one less distraction to worry about.

I am not saying he doesn't belong on the court, but it was obvious he got more minutes last year than he deserved.

Avery Johnson on establishing in-state recruiting ties in Alabama: "It was a big challenge for me because I had never coached in college and never spent much time in the state of Alabama. But I think a big key to that was me retaining Antoine Pettway."

Avery Johnson on if Collin Sexton being drafted helped in recruiting: "Absolutely, absolutely. We can’t mention any names, but we think if we continue to roll up our sleeves and work hard, that’s going to be nothing but a positive for us."

He shot 57% overall and 38% from 3 while averaging 15.2 PPG in his high school career. Dropped to 33% from 3 his last season. Also, is a little over 50% from the FT line
