I like a good melt, just not sure why I should be melting. This is more or less the exact offseason I expected to have

No one who knows what they are talking about expect Brown/Harper to leave. The only way it happens is if they get NBA draft grades which isn't happening

Heron/Wiley have always been expected to go pro

Murray/Mitchell are two guys who were about to see their minutes cut at least 50% and be bench players

I can optismistic Auburn fans expecting a high NIT seed for Auburn next year. It's a sinking ship tbh.

No they didn't. They only went .500 against tournament teams this past year.

First, we were a game over .500

Second, let's just gloss over that AU was 5-2 over NCAAT teams before major injuries derailed the season. Those 2 losses were close @Bama by 5 + 1pt TAMU when our leading scorer missed 50% of the game due to injury

The second part was trolling, but AU not having a final four roster wasn't trolling.

How are you getting a game above .500?

I've got wins @UT, Arkansas, @Mizzou, Kentucky, Alabama, and Charleston. Losses @Bama, neutral Bama, Clemson, A&M, @Florida, and @Arkansas.

6-6

Forgot that road win vs Murray St my brother

Again, you are including wins form a team that had a 7 man rotation and effectively missing 2 starters in Brown/McLemore + Mustapha Heron missed games too

If everyone returned + the ducks lined up in a row from players healthy (Brown/McLemore) to team chemistry, AU's team would be expected to be a #1 / #2 seed

Quality program. Was that a 2 for 1 deal for Auburn?

That was a "Literally no one is willing to schedule us and we need a road game" deal

It might be hard to believe, but not many (read no good) programs are interested scheduling Home/Homes with Auburn

Not sure why, we check a lot of rare boxes

-Opposing fans really enjoy bringing upstart programs who are historically irrelevant who may hand you a "L"

-In competition for the 2nd best program in a football state of only 5mil population

-Prime Access to the fertile recruiting grounds of Lee County Alabama, where AU's hegemony extends. May even get interest from non Alabama bound players in other parts of AL

-Possible TV exposure in the lucrative Birmingham tv markets

Alabama apparently has made 2019 guard Jaykwon Walton a priority. Here’s what Walton said:

quote:

Alabama - “They told me I am a priority in the 2019 class. The coaches think I can come right in and play. That was really good to hear.”

Smart move. Mentioned earlier we really like him even though he is a backup plan

Using the minute distribution pre McLemore injury, Auburn would be returning nearly 65-70% of our minutes. That would be one of the highest return % in the country

Not sure why I should be so worried considering we also add in Doughty/Purifoy + potentially could add Wiley if he doesn't get the draft grade he wants

Wiley is the only player that declared that will get drafted. It would be like if Hall, Petty, and Jones all declared for Alabama. I'd be pretty worried, even if they didn't sign with an agent right away.

You've got to expect at least one out of Brown, Wiley, and Harper will stay in the draft. I just think it is highly unlikely that all three return. Even still, if all three do return, that puts Auburn at 9 scholarship players. While that is plenty to have a rotation, that is razor thin and any injury would be magnified by the depleted roster unless a grad transfer or two is brought in.

great post

On a serious note, I wonder if teams like Murray State will start getting more good opponents to visit them with the new quadrant system.

We talked about St. Mary's awful schedule during the season. I think what really was the downfall was not playing any road games. They only played two road games OOC and didn't leave California for a game until December 30th.

Because of the new quadrant system, you can get "quality" wins without even playing very good teams. Some examples of teams that would've been Q1 or Q2 road wins and likely be willing to play St. Mary's: UC Irvine (16-17), New Mexico (18-15), Wyoming (19-13), Fresno State (19-11), Utah Valley (19-10)

Part if the problem for a team like St Mary's is that they need to fund their program

Unlike SEC teams, their revenue is mostly a game day sales + donor related + tournament revenues.

Unlike other midmajors like Georgia St, no one in their right mind is paying St Mary's to come whoop their arse at home

So for a school like St Mary's who sells out their games and relies on that revenue, giving up a home game is hard to justify just to add a Q2 win in 1 out of 2 seasons

A road game against a respectable mid major can now be called a quality win, so schools could save some money by playing those team home and home while also strengthening their team's resume.

SEC footprint opponents that would've been Q1 road wins last year:

Murray State
Western Kentucky
MTSU
Houston
Davidson
Charleston
The Flagship of Louisiana
UNC-G

If you're a smaller basketball brand like Ole Miss, why not schedule some home and home games with these teams to try to steal a Q1 or Q2 win and save money?

Listened to a great podcast that broke down the different games they either canceled or wouldn't agree to, really makes you glad they got "snubbed" this year.

Why would you be worried if any declared to go through the draft process?

No one is worried about TN losing Admiral Schofield

What was it?

I'd read my post above though. There probably is some context missing on the operations side of why a team like St Mary's would turn down games
