I agree with that. We need a point guard in a bad way. Playing a freshman at point will cost us games.

Avery Jr isn’t a freshman

Freshman can start at point guard. Ask Mo Williams, Ron Steele, Trevor Releford, and Collin Sexton. If Butler's worth the hype he's getting, he'll be able to start next year.

TBH, I expect Dazon to start on day one, but for Butler to take over before SEC play.

Steele, Releford and Sexton were all 3 much higher profile recruits than Butler. Only Steele/Sexton had good FR seasons based on efficiency

A FR point guards have inconsistency problems and adjustments. If you have veterans around them that can step up, usually isn't a huge problem

Releford was terrific his freshman year. A big part of the reason why that team improved and ultimately ended up being Grant's best team.

Releford ORTG was 101 according to Kenpom, which is roughly what Dazon Ingram was this year. That was largely due to an assist to TO ratio less than 1, sub 30% 3FG and good not great FT

Releford had big games but he also had some real "FR" performances as well. The inconsistencies are where starting and relying on FR get you

People remember 7 years later the great FR games that made you go wow, they don't remember the subpar games that go with

If Butler is as good of a freshman as Relly or Mo Williams, I think any rational fan would take that.

Steele and Sexton were much higher profile recruits, but calling Releford much higher profile is a stretch

ESPN was the only scouting service that had Releford as a top 75 recruit. Rivals had him at 90th and Scout was 80+ if I remember correctly. Currently Butler is 83rd on ESPN, 75th on 247sports and 89th on 247sports composite which is weighted down by Rivals (which is pretty much a joke now) 121st ranking. He's pretty much in the same ball park as Releford was coming out.

As you mentioned, we don't need a spectacular Sexton/Steele year from him. If he can provide a Releford/Mo Williams type of impact in his first year that would be enough.

Here's hoping he ends up like Releford....

Drew DeArmond said Giddens was not present for Sexton's presser because of a family issue. Not sure he transfers.

Good. I don't want to watch a 6'3 kid kick our arse in the paint again.
