Haven't watched any part of The Opening this year. TS haa any good news emerged out of it for us? Seems like we have drawn a blank so far.

Dabo has a unique talent to focus in on specific players(why they offer less scholarships then most DI programs) to get who he wants. Especially over the last 5 years in NC at least up through the 2018 class with 5 stars like D Lawrence, C Powell, and KJ Henry, and top players that were 4 stars. Two things have happened recently to change all of that. Pruitt and Brown. WNC use to be UT orange for as long as I can remember until Fulmer ran the program into the ground. Now Pruitt is there and we know he can recruit. Brown has a lot of relationships in the state from his time here before.

Pruitt grabbed 3 of the top 10 players out of NC last cycle including the #1 player in the state. This year UNC seems to be grabbing those players. GA will always get a few plucked due to so many top level players. But Dabo is starting to see fences put up around him on his neighboring borders with Brown, Pruitt, Smart, and even USC instate is doing well.

TideSaint and I have both been posting articles on Bama targets' performances, interviews and recruiting buzz from The Opening. And yes, they included good news about some Bama commits and targets.

Top targets planning (or likely) to commit soon:

4* DE Myles Murphy 6-4/280 NC film
-- Announcing July 8 at 3 pm. Says he knows where he wants to go. USCe had been his leader for months but the latest buzz and crystal ball picks indicate that he may commit to UNC, where he took his most recent OV.

4-star DB/WR Joel Williams 6-1.5/180 LA hudl
-- Appears on the verge of announcing any day.

4-star S/CB Xavion Alford 6-0.5/188 TX hudl
-- "Coach Saban, every time I go up there, he makes it clear that he really wants me... It could be today, tomorrow, a month from now, it could be real soon.”

4-star ATH Kristian Story 6-1/206 AL hudl
-- Announcing July 18.

4-star DL Jaquelin Roy 6-3.5/289 LA hudl
-- Announcing July 26.

5* RB Kendall Milton 6-2/220 CA hudl *
-- Announcing July 29 at 7 pm. It appears he'll commit to UGA.

4-star WR EJ Williams 6-3.5/192 AL hudl *
-- By late August. At The Opening Finals on June 30, he said Bama is #1 and Clemson #2. But the concensus among 247 analysts is that he's still trending to Clemson. He camped at Clemson in June and said he plans to attend their "All In" big recruiting event the last weekend in July.

5-star RB Zachary Evans 5-11/200 TX hudl
-- Has said he may commit before FB season.

4-star ILB Jordan Banks 6-1/228 CA hudl
-- Came to the cookout and camp in June. Bama has been his leader since the June 2018 cookout. Hank said his offer is committable, but also said in his post-visit article that Banks is targeting a late Nov decision. Maybe he'll decide to commit sooner, to avoid Bama running out of room for him.

I’ve recently toured UNC with my daughter. It’s a nice campus in a nice area and it’s a helluva education for a public university. Mack is a pretty good recruiter when he tries and he’s got an easy product to sell. Daughter ranked UNC up there with Bama and she LOVED the Bama honors college tour. That says a lot about Chapel Hill to me.
Dabo’s North Carolina gravy train will be closing down to a trickle real soon.

ETA: Myles Murphy will be a Tarheel.

Will Mack be the in-conference opposition along with Syracuse against Clemson? I hope so.

If a Mack Brown coached team is the biggest in-conference stumbling block Clemson is going to face in the coming years, their trophy case is going to continue to grow substantially. At this point in his career, Mack can still slap backs, "aw shucks", kiss babies, and good ol' boy it up for the camera with the best of them. But a good football coach, he is not.

IMHO UNC could possibly be a sleeping giant in the ACC. The campus is a lot nicer than Clempson or USCe, it's up there to me with UGA and the Carolinas produce some solid talent...all a coach would need to do is do a decent job filling depth positions from that area and add a couple star level guys from Florida and/or Md/DC and a few years they would be competing on a national level. That being said, I don't have ANY confidence in Mack Brown to be able to do any of that

helluva education for a public university
public or private, it's a top tier school.

Restrictive as well, NC state law dictates that no less than 82% of each freshman class at UNC-Chapel Hill come from instate. So, instate recruiting when possible across all sports is a win when it works out.

It is a tight margin the University has to manage closely. I recall a few years back that they busted the cap by less than 50 students and were fined ~1 million bucks.

It is a unique problem for athletic recruiting, as it is absolutely a factor at a school that focuses heavily on academic recruiting as well.

Transfer students don't count against the cap, so I wonder how much the Ath Dept as a whole (especially low revenue producing sports) targets that population

It is a UNC state systems policy for the 16 schools to ensure instate students get priority. Has been a lot of discussion thought lately because UNCCH is raising tuition and saying if they do not they will need to increase the cap of out of state tuition. Tuition is still around 8800 a year which is not bad.

There are actually 3 schools in the system now that have dropped their tuition to a flat rate of $500 a semester. But are seeing revenue increase on the back end with housing like WCU is seeing huge increases in enrollment and building.

Mack was not brought in to win title but rebuild relationships, the image, and the team. Rumors here are 5 years to turn the program around and then look for him to maybe be an AD or some role with the team. His last 5 years saw UNC ranked almost every week for those 5 years including finishing top 10 a few times. The stadium stayed sold out as well which is big since BBall is the king around here.

Not with that said Clemson may be his FSU from the 90s. The only reason he could not win the ACC then was because of FSU who has just joined. But the talent seems to be a lot deeper now instate which will help and if NC State with not very good coaching and lesser talent can cause problems for CU I think UNC will. And if he can get the program back to a 10 win season it may be a lot easier to bring in a top upcoming HC after he leaves that will have them competing for titles.

UNC right now is in a good position to land the #1 instate recruit Evans(5 star), #5 Murphy, along with the #7 & #8 players both teammates. They feel confident they can also flip Mohammad #6 instate from aTm as they already got his teammate #10 instate. They also believe if they can get Murphy they have a great shot at flipping his teammate who is currently committed to USC who is the #9 instate player.

Again a lot can happen but that would be 7 of the top 10 players instate including 1 5 star and 6 4 stars(7 if you count the #12 instate player). Currently they are ranked 17th with the class but if they added 6 of those uncommitted/flipped they may end up near the top 10. Outside of NC targets they are only really looking at a few out of the DMV area and I think a kid out of Missouri. The big to targets out of state at the top of their board include Z Evans(who Brown apparently has a good relationship with some of his coaches) and Burch out of SC, but they do not feel that confident on either.

BTW not really relevant to UA football except I do believe it will affect some of our rivals like CU who plucks kids out of NC.

Tide 'definitely in picture' for elite WR committed elsewhere (BamaOnLine-VIP)
quote:

Top50 WR, LSU commit Jermaine Burton

“Pretty much just the type of program they are... It’s a very high-standard program, where you go in and you’re expected to work, nothing is given. I really liked that about them. It all came down to which offense I fit better in and I just felt like it was LSU. But Bama is still a school I would consider. I do plan to get back down on my official visit... I would say not too many schools have a shot with me right now. I would say Bama is definitely in the picture.”

4* WR Jermaine Burton 6-0.5/187 CA hudl LSU

Probably Tide Saint or one of those other homo's from the Bama board. Bama has a team of geeks that does this shite...to stir up crap. It has been discussed over the last 10 years on here numerous times...
