Breaking down the pass-catchers after Day 1 of The Opening

quote:

FRISCO, Texas — Monday afternoon at The Opening Finals saw players break up into a camp-like setting to work on position-specific drills and 1-on-1s. Here are our observations from watching the wide receivers and tight ends work out at the Star.

Alpha Dog

There was a really strong group of receivers working out but it was tight end Michael Mayer who had the day’s most dominant performance. The Notre Dame commit had multiple acrobatic jump ball catches, got easy separation on throws down the field and didn’t drop a ball that we saw all day. In fact, not only did we not see Mayer drop a ball, we didn’t see him lose a single rep all day. Mayer projects as a possession/third-down pass0catcher as well as a threat down the field.

Next 3

Gee Scott - Scott really impressed with his route running, hands and catch radius. The Ohio State commit might have been the most polished route runner of the day, got a ton of separation and has extremely strong hands. He has a big, strong body and does a nice job catching the ball through contact. He also has better long speed than given credit for and was getting deep all day.

Jermaine Burton - Burton has a lethal combination of strength, speed and hands. He’s shows both short area burst and deep speed, is very strong in his upper body and has a wide catch radius. The LSU commit can run every route and is a natural pass catcher, even with a corner hanging on him.

Eddie Williams - Williams is as smooth as it gets. The game just looks easy for him and he has deceptive speed for a long 6-3, 190 pound pass catcher. He does a nice job setting up a corner, is tough to jam at the line of scrimmage and showed sticky hands. Alabama, Auburn and Clemson look like the favorites for Williams right now.

Emptying the Notebook

- All eyes were on the nation’s top two pass catchers, Demond Demas and Julian Fleming, and neither disappointed. The only thing keeping them from making our top three list was some spotty quarterback play during their reps. Fleming has a college body right now and has tremendous speed. Demas is very twitchy and has high level body control. For the fun of it, Demas also threw it 62 yards in the long ball competition, jumping in with the quarterbacks.

- Gary Bryant is cat quick and and might have been the best getting up the field after making the catch. He never fights the football and was an extremely tough cover. Arizona State, Oklahoma UCLA, USC and Washington are his early leaders.

- Marcus Rosemy really came on strong toward the end of the day. He’s a big receiver at 6-2, 190 pounds and won every 50-50 ball that we saw. The Georgia commit has a chance to be special in college.

- Tight end Arik Gilbert was tremendous and showed why he’s one of the top all around athletes in the country. While there has been talk of him playing defense, he was close to uncoverable all day. At 6-6, 245 pounds, Gilbert is a load to deal with down the field and he was very consistent catching the ball as well.

- Ze'Vian Capers was yet another big receiver who showed he can make plays down the field. He looked all of 6-4, 195 pounds and was routinely able to run pass defenders and made multiple tough 50-50 ball catches.

- Mookie Cooper is among the most versatile athletes in the country and can play running back or receiver. He worked out with the receivers today and every time we looked up, he was getting deep and running past a defender.

- Jaxon Smith-Njigba was a late add but had a very good day and showed he belonged. The Ohio State commit catches the ball as naturally as anyone, has high level body control and runs really well.

Bryan Bresee headlines strong DL showing at The Opening Finals

quote:

FRISCO, Texas — Monday afternoon at The Opening Finals saw players break up into a camp-like setting to work on position-specific drills and 1-on-1s. Here are our observations from watching the defensive linemen work out at the Star.

Alpha Dog

Sometimes the highest-ranked player makes it obvious and today was one of those cases with Bryan Bresee. 247Sports Composite's No. 1 prospect heading into the event, he led the way all afternoon on the field, whether in drills or in one-on-one competition. At 6-foot-5, 290 pounds, Bresee plays with great power and technique, perhaps as expected. But where he really wows is with his overall explosiveness and quickness at that size. Using developed pass rushing moves, he won just about every way possible Monday. The domination began with power, shifted to counter moves inside and finished with pure speed and finesse. The only competition rep Bresee fell short on was an attempted spin move inside against Tate Ratledge. Everything else was near flawless and honestly looked easy more times than not. Clemson is getting an alpha in every sense of the definition and the rising-senior had fun during every step of his latest display, too.

Next 3

1. Demonte Capehart, Hartsville (S.C.)

Another Clemson commitment in the trenches, the four-star was probably the top defensive line performer among those who mostly stayed on the interior Monday. Like Bresee, he can win with power or quickness, flashing in both arenas against bigger blockers. Capehart puts pressure on the opposition immediately off the line and can jolt laterally at any point, making for big wins on this day. Otherwise he played with good leverage and overpowered the opponent on routine. Capehart’s lateral ability pairs well with his frame and base.

2. Korey Foreman, Corona (Calif.) Centennial

The 2021 prospect looked like the youngest competitor in the trenches on occasion, but few had more dominant flashes than the Californian. In addition to absolutely looking the part, well-proportioned with good length, the athleticism jumped out near instantly Monday. He overwhelmed some of the more slender tackles with an outside stab and power step back underneath before a rip. Against others he tried to win with speed, doing so successfully more times than not. But Foreman’s best flash was an outside spin move he set up to perfection, quick and fluid on execution. The rising-junior recruit is uncommitted at this time but Alabama, USC, Oregon, LSU and UCLA are among those involved early on.

3. Tre Williams, Washington (D.C.) St. John’s College

Another future Clemson Tiger, Williams used his natural leverage and lower-body power to get blockers on skates but countered with great quickness as well. One easy win put pressure on the blocker’s front side before he jumped back inside and swam over the top to get to the passer with minimal contact. Not bad for a 300-pounder working in limited space. Williams played a bit outside of his frame at times but even then he recovered with good power to salvage close calls.

Emptying the Notebook

- 247Sports Composite five-star Reggie Grimes is a do-it-all athlete at the prep level but worked as a defensive end Monday. He won big early in the day with a good combination of length and power. He’d later rely on the speed rush too much but the frame and raw athleticism isn’t hard to project. Alabama, Tennessee, South Carolina and Florida State, among others, are in the mix.

-Gervon Dexter had an up and down showing. With his great frame he won with power and drive when he wanted to but failed to counter when the bull option was denied. The Florida commitment has the tools to be among the most dominant players in the country, regardless of position, so we’ll look forward to the shoulder pads coming on the rest of the way.

- The top prospect in Mississippi, McKinnley Jackson had a solid showing both in drills and in competition portions of the workout. He is fairly quick for his size and seems to be reshaping his big body. Alabama, Auburn, Ole Miss, Mississippi State, LSU and others are courting his services.

- Monday wasn’t the best day for the edge rushing group. Winning with speed is typical in a non-padded setting but the offensive tackle prospects were ready to get to depth all day long. Blue-chippers Grimes, Chantz Williams, B.J. Ojulari and Princely Umanmielen fell more than not. Expect some bounce back work from the talented group.

- While in attendance, Powder Springs (Ga.) Hillgrove defensive end and 247Sports Composite five-star Myles Murphy will not participate in the workouts this week. The Clemson commitment has an unspecified minor injury.

- After being told he would check in late, 247Sports did finally spot four-star Houston (Tex.) Cy Ridge defensive lineman Vernon Broughton but he was in street clothes during Monday’s work.

Ranking the best of the Elite 11 QBs from Day 3

quote:

FRISCO, Texas — Monday afternoon at The Opening Finals saw players break up into a camp-like setting to work on position-specific drills and 1-on-1s. Here are the top 11 performers from the quarterback workout at the Star. Reminder: This is not a cumulative ranking of the QBs from the entire event.

1. Rancho Cucamonga (Calif.) three-star quarterback CJ Stroud put up another strong performance flashing a big arm that’s accurate down the field. While the 6-foot-3, 195-pounder's footwork can get sloppy at times, it does not affect his ability to place the ball on receivers hands. Stroud’s highlight throw was a beautifully lofted fade placed right on the outstretched hands of Gee Scott, who didn’t break stride to make the catch. Of all the quarterbacks in the camp, Stroud has the most ‘wow’ throws on the day.

2. USC commit Bryce Young of Santa Ana (Calif.) Mater Dei once again showed he's steady passer that is consistently on time and on target with throws. Young throws one of the more catchable balls of all the signal callers in the group. If there was one weakness for Young on Monday, it was his accuracy wavered some on vertical throws down the field.

3. Arkansas commit Chandler Morris of Dallas (Texas) Highland Park was extremely sharp from start to finish on Monday. Despite being undersized at 5-foot-10, 175-pounds, Morris is fundamentally sound and was accurate with his throws. Morris was at his best throwing intermediate routes.

4. Florida commit Anthony Richardson of Gainesville (Fla.) Eastside has been a pleasant surprise through three days of competition for the quarterbacks. The 6-foot-4, 225-pound Richardson looked to run an impressive forty during combine testing on Monday, which was expected from the uber athletic prospect. However, what he has shown throwing the ball is what has impressed. Richardson once again threw several on target passes, including an impressive corner route to his left side. Richardson capped Monday’s session with a camp-best 68.5 yard throw in the long toss competition.

5. Tennessee commit Harrison Bailey of Marietta (Ga.) came out throwing darts early in the session. The 6-foot-5, 225-pounder then hit a rough patch in the middle of the workout before finishing up with a strong showing during 1-on-1s. It was during those 1-on-1s, Bailey showed impressive timing getting the ball out as a receiver was breaking off his route, and placing it on the chest of his receivers.

6. Georgia commit Carson Beck of Jacksonville (Fla.) Mandarin is another steady and technically sound quarterback. Beck has one of the cleaner deliveries in the camp, which helps him consistently throw accurate balls. Beck thrives on intermediate passes, but lofted a few nice fade routes as well.

7. North Carolina commit Jacolby Criswell of Morrilton (Ark.) continues to look like one of the better pure passers in the camp. The 6-foot-1, 220-pound prospect has plenty of zip on his passes and looks very comfortable operating in the pocket. Criswell’s throws outside the numbers are impressive and show off his overall arm strength.

8. Iowa State commit Hunter Dekkers of Hawarden (Iowa) West Sioux has one of the more powerful arms in the camp. The stout 6-foot-2, 225-pound prospect can drive the ball down the field with ease, but he also showed the ability to finesse passes into his receivers with touch as well.

9. Texas commit Hudson Card of Austin (Texas) Lake Travis got off to a slow start on Monday, but heated up as the day went on. The lean gunslinger began whipping the ball into tightly covered receivers during 1-on-1s. Card looks to still have some upside to his game as well.

10. Haynes King of Longview (Texas) frequently does not spin a pretty ball. That said, King is still accurate with his throws despite not being aesthetically appealing. King is quick with his drops and getting his feet set to throw.

11. LSU commit TJ Finley of Ponchatoula (La.) made some of the most impressive throws of the camp, but would follow it up with a frustrating errant pass. Regardless, his ‘wow’ throws were good enough for the 6-foot-6, 240-pound signal caller to make the cut on Monday. Finley is at his best throwing vertically along either sideline. That is where he flashes a big-time arm, but his overall consistency still needs to improve.

If you had to put a percentage how confident would you be in Roy?

A few days ago nolacapstone said, "Roy is Bama." So I was feeling pretty confident. But Roy's announcement that he's committing on July 26 and the ensuing confidence on the L$U side, has me back on the fence (50-50) now, waiting for nolacap to chime in again.

Despite my prolonged absence from this thread and recruiting in general, it appears I still have a following of butthurt LSU fans over on the LSURb.

Dear Mr. Roy, in case you were wondering about LSU defensive lineman development and production, look no further.....

2019 NFL draft: 0 DL taken
2018 NFL draft: 0 DL taken
2017 NFL draft: 5th round, Davon Godchaux
2016 NFL draft: 0 DL taken
2015 NFL draft: 3rd round Danielle Hunter

NOTE: 2015 and part of 2016, Coach O was the LSU DL coach before being promoted to head coach, a position he's held since. Ironic that a coach noted for his ability to coach the DL has only put 2 DL in the league in his 5 years in Baton Rouge, neither remotely close to being a 1st rounder.

If Roy has made a decision to commit to Bama, I doubt he will let people know he is attending the Cookout until much closer to the 26th - it's a dead giveaway if he announces he's going to the cookout after saying he's committing on the 26th. If he's not attending, the chances of him committing fall drastically.

If he's committing to Bama and wants to avoid the dead give away, he might not tell anyone other than Bama's staff that he's attending Bama's cookout. But LSU may be hosting a recruiting event that weekend too. I don't think Bama's chances necessarily drop drastically if he doesn't come to Bama's cookout on the 26th, but obviously would if he plans to attend an LSU recruiting event on the 26th instead.

Eta: Alford has been tearing it up so far at The Opening finals.

Robinson dishes on who he's recruiting at The Opening (BamaOnLine-VIP | segment)
quote:

Quandarrius Robinson

“Darnell (Washington), Arik (Gilbert), EJ (Williams), and I think that’s about it for right now... There’s really no pitch. Bama speaks for itself. I can’t do nothing but repeat the same thing coaches told me: when you get here just be ready to work. They’re going to give you every opportunity to start and get playing time. You’ve just got to get guys that are willing to work... and make me better, and I get to make them better.”

Eta: QRob has also been recruiting Phillip Webb.

Five-Star DB Elias Ricks planning official visits (247Sports)
quote:

Five-Star defensive back Elias Ricks has been a solid commitment to LSU since Christmas but is still planning to take all five of his official visits.

Ricks is currently the No. 16 rated prospect nationally in the 247Sports Composite and No. 9 by 247Sports. He’s the top cover corner in the nation and was rated the top DB of the day following Monday’s initial workout at The Opening Finals.

Ricks is long and athletic and uses his 6-2 frame and physical style to bully opposing wide receivers. He has the athleticism to turn and run with the faster receivers as well and has tremendous ball skills and showed it as a junior with nine interceptions returning six for touchdowns.

Ricks spent the last two weeks in Louisiana with his family and was on the Tigers campus quite a bit.

“I have a lot of family out there so it was good to see everyone,” Ricks told us Sunday during player checkin. “I did a camp at LSU as well and did a workout with coach Raymond. He’s a great coach, he really knows what he’s doing and has a way of breaking down the game and making it easier.

“He taught me some new things and I’m excited to try them out. I don’t know if I’ll try them out this week at The Opening because I’m still learning but I know he’s a coach that can make me a lot better.”
