I'm not sure about that. FBS schools have rosters, recruits and scholarships to manage too. I would assume most of those options are gone. Most of these guys are juniors and seniors and have too many credits to transfer to a JUCO.

The number of FCS, D2, D3, and Juco schools in the United States is a HUGE number. They could likely take all the kids in the portal multiple times over.

D3 schools don't provide football scolarships. And transfering to a juco is only an option for freshmen (rising sophomores). That said, generally I agree with your point that FBS players who enter the portal and then don't get their scholarship renewed, will likely at least find an FCS or D2 school that wants them.

I meant FCS schools. As I said and Surge reiterated most can't go JUCO. FCS schools have scholarship limits and recruiting classes just like FBS, they likely don't have spots just like most FBS programs right now. Division II only offers partial scholarships and again still have rosters to manage. If they can pay to go to school and can find a place to get a roster spot than they can continue to play but that would likely be a small amount.

Man it is rough when the numbers are this tight. I so want to hold on to Caden Clark, especially with his brother being recruited over at Ohio State but there is no way to pass up on the exceptional talents of Grimes, Washington, and/or Gilbert.

Apparently space may be getting tighter, perhaps due to top targets Bama feels very good about landing. One of the top insider posters on BOL said Reggie Grimes doesn't have a green light to commit right now. Also a USCe mod flipped his CB for Grimes from Bama to foggy. Apparently Bama is still recruiting him though, as Hank said he's still set to visit for the 2nd cookout and take his OV to Bama on Sept 20. In other words, he could end up being a take at some point.

The US is a really big country. I'm confident most or all can play somewhere, just a lower level than they want. It's only about 200 kids. There certainly aren't enough spots in FBS, no, but many, MANY kids transferred long before the portal existed, and any who look for a lower-level landing spot will find one. FYI, my opinion is based in comments from Barton Simmons, Director of Scouting for 247sports, in a podcast weeks ago.

Yes you are right. I should have said they will have a very small chance to play on scholarship and will have to pay thier way if they want to play. I'm sure paying to play lower division football is not the goal of many when they request to enter the portal. Who knows if it is accurate but there is way more than 200 kids in the 247 transfer portal that don't have schools. I'm sure non scholarship options will open up for them however. There are 250 DIII schools, 169 DII, and 125 FCS.

Sometimes it's best to stay with your team, wait your time, and fight for playing time as you get older/better. This generation is such an instant gratification generation. Many will learn the hard way that patience is a virtue.

I heard that there are about 200 more kids in the transfer portal than open scholarship spots in FBS, as of about 2 weeks ago. Granted, much of this problem lies with the yearly scholarship limits, not necessarily the 85 total limit.

I'm guessing a low percentage of those open FBS scholarship spots are likely going to go to kids still in the portal. Most teams will only have 1 or 2 and or more likely to use them on a 2020 recruit than a late transfer.

this may have already been answered.

do schools have the option of not reserving the scholy once a kid enters the portal?

LINK ]Nation's No. 1 CB has Alabama in top 5 (BamaOnLine | includes video)
quote:

Alabama  is among the top five schools for the nation's No. 1 cornerback  LINK ]Kelee Ringo. Joining the Crimson Tide for the five-star prospect from Scottsdale (Ariz.) Saguaro are Georgia, Ohio State, Oregon, and Texas.

For the better part of 2019, the race for Ringo's signature has centered around the Bulldogs and Longhorns, with the former holding an edge as of late after hosting him twice this spring.

The last time Ringo visited Tuscaloosa, by BamaOnLine's records, was for camp last summer after the Tide extended an offer the previous April. "It was a huge experience and I absolutely loved it," Ringo told 247Sports' Blair Angulo last summer after camping in Tuscaloosa.

"I really like coach Nick Saban and, at the camp, he was so energetic. I love the way he coaches. He acts like an assistant coach. The head coaches at a lot of other schools are laid back, but he was giving pointers and he was in there. I liked it a lot. Alabama is really high for me. I could see myself there."

At 6-foot-2, 205 pounds, Ringo has the size-speed combo so many college coaches look for at the cornerback position in today's game. Ringo has run a verified 10.58-second 100-meter dash time.

247Sports' compares Ringo to Jalen Ramsey:

"Long, projectable frame with muscular build. Carries 205 pounds very well. Room to add mass and maintain flexibility. Explosive athlete with terrific straight-line speed. Length to cover big receivers out wide. Highly competitive and thrives in man coverage. Stingy near the line of scrimmage. Opens hips and stays with speedsters. Very good ball skills. Tends to get too physical at times, so will need to harness the aggressiveness. Potential to start at any Power Five program as true freshman. Upside as first-round NFL Draft selection." (via Blair Angulo)

Will Ringo return to Tuscaloosa for an official visit? Seeing as he has narrowed his list down to five and has yet to take an official visit, it's possible the five-star DB makes his way back out to the Capstone.

As it stands, the Bulldogs and the Longhorns are tied at 43 percent a piece on the 247Sports Crystal Ball. The other 14 percent is foggy.

The Tide's current defensive backs class consists of four-star cornerbacks Malachi Moore and Jahquez Robinson, as well as four-star safeties Brian Branch and Javier Morton.

Other defensive back targets of the Tide's include: four-star athlete Joel Williams, junior college cornerback Nadab Joseph, four-star safety Xavion Alford, and four-star athlete Kristian Story, among others.

Alabama sits at No. 2 in the 247Sports Composite Team Recruiting Rankings, slowly but surely gaining ground on Clemson in the No. 1 position.

LINK ]WATCH: 4-star QB Miller Moss explains why Tide's a factor (BOL | video)
quote:

Alabama put in work this month evaluating and offering the top talent at the quarterback position in both the 2021 and ’22 recruiting cycles.

One name to remember for Crimson Tide fans is LINK ]Miller Moss. The 2021 four-star signal caller visited Tuscaloosa earlier in June, receiving an offer from Nick Saban during his time on campus.

The Mission Hills (Calif.) Bishop Alemany product discussed the visit and what piques his interest in Alabama at this early juncture in his recruitment with 247Sports’ Keith Niebuhr.

Q: What was it like getting to know Nick Saban, spending some time in his office with him?

“It was crazy. You walk in and for the first ten minutes there’s a certain wow factor where you’re just like, ‘Oh my God, I’m talking to Coach Saban.’ But he was a great guy, super intelligent, and didn’t speak so much on football. He spoke a lot about character, the kind of man they build at Alabama, which I think spoke volumes to how he runs his program and why he’s so successful.”

Q: How do you feel like you fit into Tuscaloosa with the limited time you had there?

“Tuscaloosa is a beautiful, little college town. It’s not really LA, but I want to see different parts of the country. I was born and raise in LA and I really want to go see the country and get a taste for different things.”

Q: Compared to other schools like Michigan and USC, what about the facilities at Alabama?

“They were next level. It was what I expected. With a school that’s so successful, you’re going to have everything at a certain level. Facilities were second to none, no question. I think culturally I saw why the way in which they run their team breeds winning.”

Q: What would be the biggest reason why Alabama will be a factor?

“I want to be the best football player I can possibly be. And in order to be the best, you have you to go play with the best. And I think that’s just, bottom line, that’s a huge thing for me.”

At 6-foot-2, 197 pounds, Moss is rated the No. 9 pro-style quarterback and the No. 149 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

67 percent of the 247Sports Crystal Ball predictions sit “foggy” with Michigan holding the lone pick.
