LINK ]Alabama in top 3 for elite DL target (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama, LSU, and Texas A&M are the last teams standing for Top100 defensive tackle  LINK ]Jaquelin Roy, the Baton Rouge (La.) University Lab product announced on Monday.

The Crimson Tide has been in heavy pursuit of Roy for the better part of 2019. Things have ramped up as of late, especially since Roy de-committed from LSU earlier this year.

On Sunday, BamaOnLine reported the latest intel regarding Roy's recruitment.

Another top target, also from the Pelican State, Jaquelin Roy was on his official visit to Texas A&M this weekend. Most have seen the battle for the Baton Rouge native to be between the Tide and Bengal Tigers, but I think you have to consider the Aggies a dark horse here. Roy has yet to set up his visits to Tuscaloosa or Baton Rouge (his high school is right on campus), but plans to in the future. Bama is set up pretty nice here, but it won’t be easy.

Roy camped at the Capstone earlier this month, dominating the competition along the way. Afterwards, he caught up with BOL.

"Coach (Brian) Baker sure did put me through a lot of work and I liked it all," he said. "Bama showed a lot of love and I like the campus a lot. That was my first time visiting and I liked everything about it. They'll be in my top three for sure."

Alabama has a strong track record in the state of Louisiana recruiting elite defensive linemen. In 2017, UA landed four-star defensive tackle Phidarian Mathis, and just last February, Nick Saban and company signed Ishmael Sopsher.

Defensive coordinator Pete Golding is leading the charge in Roy's recruitment. The second year Tide assistant landed four-star inside linebacker Christian Harris out of University Lab this past recruiting cycle. Other top players the Tide has landed out of the Baton Rouge program include Dylan Moses (who finished his high school career at IMG Academy) and Tim Williams.

At 6-foot-3.5, 289 pounds, Roy is rated the No. 4 defensive tackle and the No. 56 overall player in the country, per the industry-generated 247Sports Composite Rankings.

LINK ]WATCH: Alabama frosh LB Christian Harris power cleans 365 pounds (BamaOnLine)
quote:

Alabama freshman linebacker  Christian Harris is putting in work in the weight room.

Assistant strength and conditioning coach Tyler Owens tweeted a video of Harris lifting on Monday, and the summer enrollee easily power-cleaned 365 pounds at the Mal M. Moore Athletic Facility.

Harris was the No. 4 inside linebacker and No. 71 overall prospect in the 2019 recruiting cycle, according to 247Sports. The 6-foot-1.5, 235-pound linebacker will learn a new position at inside linebacker as a member of the Crimson Tide. At University Lab (La.), Harris played wide receiver, safety and returned kicks on back-to-back state championship teams that won 26 consecutive games.

“I’m excited,” Harris told said BamaOnLine in May. “I put my trust in Coach (Pete) Golding that he’s going to lead me in the right direction and help with this linebacker position since I’ve never played it before. … Just from playing safety and corner so much, with certain coverages and scenarios, I would know what they’re doing, and that will probably help me understand more just because I played really every position except for D-line. So, I have a little bit of background of what’s going on, so I feel like that will help me learn the playbook a little faster and stuff like that.”

When he arrives on campus and gets used to the summer conditioning that awaits him, Harris said he wants to dive into his playbook so that “if I do have a chance at possibly getting some playing time, I’m ready, I’m not going to be all confused and stuff. I’ll be ready for the challenge.”

As for the season, Harris explained his goals for his freshman year at Alabama. “I just want to see that I develop as a man on and off the field,” Harris said. “You’re going to go through a lot in the summer, you’re going to have to push yourself, especially when it comes to fall camp because I’ve been talking to a lot of the players that have said how tough it is and you’re going to face a lot of adversity.

"But it’s about what you do with it when it comes to that certain point. You’re going to have to push yourself. I’m not going in with the mindset that I’m going to just automatically start first year and all of that. I’m just trying to go in and learn as much as I can and still develop as a player, compete with everybody. So, as long as I do that, I feel like I will be fine.”

That’s nuts! If he had any kind of form worth a crap he could probably get close to 400.

Dude will be a beast. It's a shame his HS didn't have him playing his natural college position so he'd be more college ready coming into camp. Why on earth you have a guy that big and physical playing safety is beyond me.

Maybe Harris' team had more talent at LB than in the secondary. If so, and he had the speed and skills to play DB better than their other options, then it makes sense. And as he mentioned, having experience playing CB and S should ultimately help him be a better ILB. He also said he's played every defensive position some, except DL. It wouldn't surprise me at all if he's a starting ILB in 2020. He's pretty much ready physically. It's mainly a matter of learning his position within Bama's defensive system and getting coached up on technique. He talks like he has the right attitude and work ethic to do it.

A 6-1.5/240 ILB with the speed, athleticism and pass coverage skills of a 6-1.5/195 DB.

LINK ]Nick Saban wins over mom of four-star cornerback (BamaInsider | embedded video)
quote:

LINK ]Joel Williams is fresh off a visit to Alabama and in this exclusive video interview, Williams gives the latest on his recruitment.

Nick Saban made his impression on Joel Williams earlier this month — this weekend it was all about winning over his mom. Williams, a four-star cornerback recruit in the 2020 class, returned to Tuscaloosa, Ala., with his family over the weekend as he took part in Alabama’s Champions Cookout.

“This time the trip was for my parents because my momma really didn’t agree with Nick Saban until she talked to him,” Williams said. “She talked to him, and she really loves Nick Saban now as a coach. He told her about the whole program, like the classes, what they do after school, after football season, the discipline, all that. She likes him. She really loves him.”

Williams, a native of Baton Rouge, La., grew up in enemy territory and believes his mom developed a negative opinion on the Alabama head coach based on different stories she had heard about him. After meeting with Saban face to face this weekend, she did a complete 180.

“She wasn’t really a Bama fan, but now she’s really a Bama fan,” Williams said. “She really wasn’t feeling Nick. She thought that Nick was like a coach that is mean or something like that until she really met him and talked with him. And like, she really loves him. She’s blown away for real.”

Convincing dad was a bit less of a challenge. “My dad has been loving Nick Saban,” Williams said. “He saw Nick Saban, and he exploded.”

Williams committed to Florida in May but decided to reopen his commitment on June 10 shortly after receiving an offer from Alabama. He currently lists both schools in his top four along with Tennessee and hometown LSU.

“I’ve been loving Alabama since I was young, and I just needed more time,” Williams said. “I really wanted to be 100 percent on my decision. You know, when I got the offer from Alabama, I really wasn’t 100 (percent) on my decision anymore.”

This past weekend was Williams’ fourth trip to Alabama has he’s been visiting the Crimson Tide since he was in eighth grade. He said he primarily speaks with defensive coordinator Pete Golding but also talks with Saban and cornerbacks coach Karl Scott.

Williams, 6-foot-1, 190 pounds, is listed as the No. 27 cornerback in the 2020 class. Alabama currently plans on using him at either cornerback or Star. However, Williams said coaches have also told him he might be a fit at safety. “They said that they want to put me on the field,” Williams said. “It really doesn’t matter to me. I can play all positions.”

Along with talking to coaches, Williams also spent time with several Alabama commits, who encouraged him to join the Crimson Tide. The pitches seem to be working as the highly-coveted defensive back said he’s starting to feel more and more at home with the Crimson Tide.

“It’s very comfortable at Alabama,” Williams said. “I just walk around like I’m a player. I just really be chilling up there, talking to all the coaches like I been knowing them. The relationships got stronger. Everything’s good there.”

Williams said he plans on making his final decision before the start of his senior season. He did not provide an exact date, only stating he’d commit to a school “earlier than expected.”

Are we trending to smaller and faster pass rushers or are we just going crazy at linebacker?

Yes and Yes. Faster, agile and mobile. Rather than big and imposing.
After the debacle of last two years at LB,Coach taking no further chances, seems like.
Injuries, inexperience, distracted play not going to stop us now.

It wouldn't surprise me if Joel Williams has committed to the staff. He got that Bama offer and dropped UF like a bad habit. Also, I think Jacquelin Roy will come to Bama but is playing it cool because he lives in BR right now.

The BOL insider from NOLA who said "Surtain is Bama" well before it happened and said "Sopsher is Bama" a year before he signed with Bama, said this a few minutes ago: "Roy is Bama"

I hope this is the case. Both Roy and Guillory are going to be very good players. Landing 1 of the 2 is expected, getting both in Crimson would be huge. Wouldn't be surprised if Roy ends up being a 5* when the final rankings come out, but Guillory is no slouch. Many in Louisiana consider Guillory to be the best DL in the state this year, if not the best player.
