NCAA Put Florida State In Bowl Game When They're Not Actually Eligible

Florida State will play Southern Mississippi in the Independence Bowl next week, but not without controversy. On Thursday, Reddit user named “bakonydraco” explained why FSU isn’t bowl-eligible and later it was confirmed that it is indeed a mistake...
quote:

For an FCS opponent to be countable towards bowl eligibility, the FCS program must have awarded at least 90% of the FCS scholarship limit. After our own investigation, we have determined and confirmed that Delaware State has not met the 90% threshold set by the NCAA. As a result, Florida State’s bowl countable record is 5-6, thus making them ineligible for a bowl game this season. At present, there are three other bowl eligible teams that were not offered a game and it would be unprecedented for a team to go bowling without either eligibility or a waiver while teams who are eligible stay home.

If there are no other bowl eligible teams (since there are so many freakin' bowls), a 4-win team can be picked for a bowl over a 5-6-win team, especially if their academic score is higher. Move along, move along.

But there are bowl eligible teams that didn't get invited because FSU took their spot... So what you're saying is irrelevant

It could be argued that being shipped to Shreveport is a bigger punishment than staying in Tallahassee.

FSU should have to play a home and home with the next team in line.

I don't want to defend Florida St, but this seems more like Delaware St's problem than the Seminoles. Florida St can't control other teams scholarships. Delaware St should have notified the NCAA and all teams on their schedule about this long before the season started. Florida St could have dropped them and scheduled someone else in their place.

Or, you know, won more games so it wasn’t relevant.

No. 1. It is not a school's responsibility to disclose their scholarships to opponents 2. FSU should have won more games 3. Notify before the season started and reschedule? You realize the games are set years in advance, for everyone, so FSU couldnt have scheduled someone else in their place last minute.

Wow. That's a big-time screw up. Could've been a very important opportunity for one of those bowl-eligible teams who didn't get invited.

Oh don't worry, lawsuit will follow. Some school just missed out on a payday.
