Charles Barkley Reveals Why Friendship With Michael Jordan Ended
© Shanna Lockwood-USA TODAY Sports
We've known for some time that the best friendship between Charles Barkley and Michael Jordan has ended. In an appearance on HBO’s “Back on the Record” with Bob Costas, Barkley spoke about his past relationship with the Chicago Bulls great and current Charlotte Hornets owner. He shared why the two aren’t all that close anymore...
quote:

“We’re not,” Barkley told Costas when asked if he and Jordan were still friends, via The Source. “And I take some responsibility for that. I criticized [him]–he was one of my best friends, and I definitely love him and miss him, to be honest with you, but I, Bob, I have to do my job. I said, at the time, and we can debate whether I should have said it, but I was asked a question, and I’m told always be honest at my job. I said, ‘I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets] because I don’t know if he got enough strong people around him.’”

Barkley wasn't lying. He's a terrible owner and his blown first-round picks are now legendary.

Anyone of yall want to bet me a steak dinner Charles prob said, ‘I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets] because I don’t know if he got enough strong people around him.’” Meanwhile the media cut off the end and ran with this quote, ‘I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets].’” I find it hard to believe MJ trashed the friendship over Barkleys quote as we're reading it now. And its not like the media doesn't lie and tailor everything to fit their agenda.

"I don’t know if Michael’s ever going to be successful [running the Charlotte Hornets] because I don’t know if he got enough strong people around him.” Even if that quote got clipped, the whole quote is critical. And Michael Jordan has always been overly sensitive to legitimate criticism. But it's truthful, and I respect Barkley for doing his job as a commentator. Many commentators won't criticize their friends when it's warranted, and they do the viewers a disservice when they hold back.

If you watched the Bulls documentary, you could see how petty Jordan was over the smallest of perceived slights.

Sounds like M.J. needs to forgive and move on.

Charles made a truthful statement and has proven to be correct. MJ “took it personally”.

MJ should have used those words as fuel versus being petty.

Apparently you could tell Jordan the sky was blue in the wrong way, and he'd shun you. Greatest of all time on the court, but by many accounts, a not so swell human being.
