Kate is right. Totally assanine that batter is punished for this. No one knows whether he would make the catch! Why? Because fans are interacting with ball and him. Why? Because MLB allows it. Very stupid. LSU gets fined 100K for students walking on the same field with students and coaches after the game for “safety” reasons, but MLB thinks it’s fine for high paid athletes and random fans to be so close by design that they can go after the same ball and potentially make contact or interfere with one another.

If that’s the correct ruling, it’s a bad rule and Kate is right. The fan was merely there, hand barely outstretched. Any normal person that didn’t want to get hit by the ball would do the same.
