It was reported over the weekend that LSU defensive end Gabriel Reliford suffered a season-ending ACL injury in spring practice last week.

On Tuesday, head coach Lane Kiffin confirmed the injury and responded to how his absence affects the DE room:
quote:

"Yeah, that’s a difficult injury," Kiffin said. "You know, really challenging for him after missing time last year. He was doing a great job."

"I kind of view that position like receivers... You need multiple defensive ends that can rush and can play snaps to play against that tempo. It was a significant loss for us. He has a really good future here, and we were really excited about how he was performing."
The redshirt sophomore from Shreveport, La., played in just four games last year after suffering a torn rotator cuff in LSU’s win over Southeastern Louisiana.

Reliford played in 13 games during his freshman season in 2024 and was expected to be a big part of LSU's defensive end rotation this upcoming season.

If I were to a root cause analysis, I would be curious to know how this happened. Was it like a Maason Smith where he jumped in celebration after making a tackle or planted wrong in a hitting drill?
Either way, injuries suck. I hope he gets back sooner than we expect. I was really looking forward to his play this year. Get well soon, Gabe. No more injuries, please.
