LSU coach Brian Kelly spoke with reporters after practice on Wednesday and provided several injury updates during the bye week.
Kelly said that quarterback Garrett Nussmeier (abdominal) is taking the bye week to rest, but is on the path to getting back to his usual self. Backup Michael Van Buren is taking all of the first-team reps in practice, while Nussmeier rests this week.
Running back Caden Durham (ankle) was unable to play last week against Ole Miss, but was much better Wednesday, Kelly said. Kelly is optimistic that Durham will be able to play against South Carolina in two weeks.
Starting right tackle Weston Davis was hit in the face by a helmet during pregame of the Ole Miss game and suffered a fractured nose and a concussion. Kelly said he's moving in the right direction and expects him to be cleared for South Carolina, but will leave it to the trainers since it's a concussion issue. Davis was replaced by freshman Carius Curne.
Offensive guard Paul Mubenga suffered a high ankle sprain against Ole Miss and is day-by-day, Kelly said.
Earlier on Wednesday, during the SEC Coaches Teleconference, Kelly said that wide receiver Aaron Anderson was unable to finish the Ole Miss game due to several issues (Hip, toe, knee) but should be good in two weeks.
"He's banged up, Kelly said. "If we were playing Saturday, he would probably answer the bell, but he's going to benefit greatly from the week off."
