Report: Alabama DC Kirby Smart Is Frontrunner For South Carolina Job

Bruce Feldman with Fox Sports is reporting that Alabama defensive coordinator Kirby Smart has emerged as the leading candidate for the head coaching job at South Carolina.
The Gamecocks are 3-8 and 1-7 in the SEC.

The 39-year-old Smart was the 2012 AFCA Assistant Coach of the Year and the 2009 Broyles Award winner as college football's top assistant coach. His D is No. 1 in the nation in yards per play; No. 2 in run defense and No. 3 in the nation in total defense.

Steve Spurrier resigned as the head coaching at South Carolina in October and was replaced by Gamecock offensive line coach Shawn Elliott on a interim basis. The Gamecocks are 3-8 and 1-7 in the SEC.
